Fictional Bad Guys Become Real

No one knows for sure who or what is doing it, or for that matter why; but over the course of a month in your campaign world, fictional villains from a wide range of media sources are suddenly becoming real and are wrecking all kinds of havoc. Thus far, the follow baddies are confirmed to have been "manifested":

  • Mumm-Ra from The Thundercats
  • Cobra Commander from G.I. Joe
  • Hordak from Masters of the Universe
  • Bowser Koopa from the Super Mario Brothers games
  • Megatron from The Transformers
  • Prince Lotor from Voltron
  • Khan from Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan
  • K.A.R.R. from Knight Rider
  • Lord Humongus from Mad Max II: The Road Warrior
  • Nuraku from Inuyasha
  • Darth Vadar from Star Wars

Re: Fictional Bad Guys Become Real

War Wolf would assume this is the work of The Producer ... for those unfamiliar, it was a villain from an older Champs supplement (Strike Force?) who would create robots based on various movie properties to run amuck. Anyway, tactical sort that he is, he'd check case studies and see if they're behaving in ways you would expect from their fictional counterparts; if so, do some research and see what their weaknesses are and exploit them. For example, Mumm-Ra can't stand the sight of his own face. Cobra Commander is a complete coward. Use holograms or other disguises to see if they can be 'baited' with their on-screen arch-enemies ... like mocking up a fake KITT.

Vixen ... might maybe have heard of Megatron from the newer Transformers movie, but that wouldn't be a lot of help ... the rest of 'em, she wouldn't know from Adam, except for Vader. So, she wouldn't likely even know she was facing realized fictional charaters until someone actually told her this. She's not big on 'the classics'. As such, she wouldn't take their MOs into account and probably stick to a pretty direct approach ... stop the bad guys and try to trail 'em back to their headquarters.

Knighthawk initially thinks he's dealing with some cosplayers that have gone around the bend. Something he's run into before but when these guys start to demonstrate actual superhuman powers he begins to take things much more seriously. His initial suspicion is the Cult of the Elder Wyrm but this seems way to whimsical for them.

War Toy suspects this might be some kind of virtual reality test/game being run by her father and not actually occurring but as there is no easy way to prove them treats it as a real events and tries to outwit the various criminals using their displayed weakness and profiles from their films and stories.

Both would try to capture and question one of the villains as soon as possible.

All characters look at each other, and chorus "Anthony!"

Anthony Fremont is very similar to the character in Jerome Bixby's story "It's a Good Life" and the Twilight Zone adaptation. He's a very young, very powerful wild talent psi. Among other tricks he's teleported Cheeta to on top of Ayers Rock. Three times. When he walked into the travel agency at Alice Springs, the first time, they just looked at him and said "You've met Anthony then."

Among other talents, he can bring people and animals across time and from alternate realities. So the team will pay young Anthony a visit. If he's not doing this, maybe he can detect who is.

Iron Maiden wouldn't recognize most of them if they punched her in the face. Mumm-Ra, Khan and Darth Vader would be the exceptions. She'd deal with most of them the way she deals with most bad guys. Attack them, try to take the fight away from any bystanders, pound them until they fall down or give up.

Black Knight wouldn't recognize any of them except Vader. He'd happily brawl with them, trying to pound them into submission.

For that matter, most of my characters wouldn't recognize most of them.

Re: Fictional Bad Guys Become Real

Are they just as incompetent as seen in their source material?

Now, now...just because the source material makes some of them seem incompetent, doesn't mean

that the beings running around in the character's world are going to suffer from that same flaw. The

heroes in a lot of the '80s' cartoons (and movies) benefited from the same phenomenon that zombies

in many of the current crop of zombie films do: sympathetic screenwriters. Ever notice in the zombie

flicks that, no matter what the good guys do or come up with to stop the zombies, the zombies invari-

ably come out on top? The same thing applied to '80s' cartoon/movie/TV supervillains, except that it

was the heroes who always came out on top.

A trend which, it seems, has gone the other way, as evidenced by the reimagined versions of shows

like Battlestar Galactica and Thundercats. Oh, the good guys in these shows do win after a fashion,

but the home court advantage, it seems, is well and truly in the bad guys' court.

Out of all of the villains who are mentioned in the list, I'd say the one that'll prove to be the biggest

thorn in the side of the heroes will the the duplicate of Khan Noonian Soong. Not only is he stronger

than any normal human being (but not, fortunately, superhumanly strong), but he also has the intell-

igence and patience to not only find out what he needs to know about his enemies, but also how to

defeat them as well. The only drawback to any of his plans will be the lack of sufficent manpower

with the same general physical abilities as himself, requiring him to recruit hordes of "lesser" minions

with which to carry out his plans.

It depends on the source material in question, Cobra Commander was quite competent in the GI Joe comicbook after all and Naraku, from Inuyasha, was pretty much a straight up villain sue in any episode of the show I saw him in. He'd regularly counter the heroes' best attacks with ease, no matter how overpowered they got.

Anyway, our heroes might not have the deus ex machina powers that always ensured the likes of Mumm-Ra and Hordak got defeated.

Re: Fictional Bad Guys Become Real

Vitus doesn't recognize any of them, but when the concept is explained will be pleased to learn of villains who are mentally unprepared to be repeatedly kicked in the balls. After all, not much ball-stomping happened in the Saturday Morning Cartoons.

Zero is a little old to be more than vaguely aware of most of them, and was never much interested in SF, but might remember Khan from the original series. But a few deep telepathic probes should reveal whether they're constructs or re-programmed humans, etc. After that, asking them questions that were never covered in the canon, should start poking large holes in their self-belief.

ROVER wouldn't understand the concept of fiction very well, and would probably ask his teammates for the mobile numbers for Luke Skywalker,, etc, so he can get tactical advice.

Girl Anachronism would think this was AWESOME

And it depends on which Vader too. The scary bad guy from the original trilogy, or Wussy McPansyBoy from the prequels?

And if Lord Humungous is here, that means Wez is here too :angst:Blue Streak would be able to take them.

The original Darth Vader would be a scary propostion, since he's Master Villain material all by himself (especially in Empire).

Re: Fictional Bad Guys Become Real

Most would be unrecognizable to my characters. Those that were recognized, they would assume it is just a crazy in a outfit bought in a costume store. Only once the villains had proven beyond a doubt that they had all the powers of the original would they even start to question anything. Given my campaign world, they have great difficulty accepting that it was fictional characters come to life, and not just a new metahuman whose powers mimic a classic villain.
