Pariah
Statistical anomaly. It was bound to happen, sooner or later.
death tribble
The big fight would seem to be between the two Russian women figure skaters who just broke the record in succession for the short programme.
Old Man
I hope this refers to melee combat. I could be persuaded to watch figure skating if it was full contact.

Old Man
Interesting. Tell me more about this "hockey". Are the combatants permitted to wear armor?
L. Marcus
Padding, really. And plastic helmets. Armed with wooden clubs.

And with hard, frozen rubber discs. Don't forget about the discs! (Actually, people do block shots other than goalies. That isn't fun, especially if it hits the unpadded area in the back of the knee. Then it's really painful and might actually do real damage.)
Pariah
In college, my roommate was the PA announcer for the school's hockey team. I still remember the warning for the spectators well: "Keep your eyes on the puck at all times. It's made of six ounces of vulcanized rubber, frozen solid before the game, and can cause serious bodily harm!"

Michael Hopcroft
Is there a way for women to make a living playing hockey?
Pariah
There are professional leagues. I don't know what they pay. The U.S. women's team is taking home $37,500 each for winning gold. That's more than I made in any of my first three years as a teacher.
Old Man
Is that per player or the entire team?
Pariah
Per player. I read an article (which I can't find on my phone at the moment) about how one player really wanted to use it for a new car, but would probably end up using at least part of it for college expenses. death tribble
Russia won the Gold and Silver in the Women's Figure Skating. Canada got Bronze. The younger of the two Russians ended up winning in what is seen as an upset as the other is the reigning World Champion. So that is the first Russian Gold. The Russian Men's Ice Hockey team is through to the final.

Old Man
Who the hell dopes for bobsled? Or curling for that matter?
tkdguy
One Russian curler was stripped of his medal because he admitted to doping. Of course, his partner in the mixed doubles event (also his wife) had to give up her medal as well, even though she didn't test positive. Michael Hopcroft
The US wins gold in men's curling. And Ivanka Trump was in the crowd. Whether she's a fan of curling or just likes to see her team come out on top is an open question.
tkdguy
The IOC was debating whether to let the Russian athletes fly their flag during the closing ceremony. The committee decided against it because of the athletes who failed the doping tests. As for hockey results (spoiler tags for those who haven't seen it yet): Russia takes the gold. Pity they didn't get to hear their national anthem played.
Pariah
Just now, tkdguy said: The IOC was debating whether to let the Russian athletes fly their flag during the closing ceremony. Pity they didn't get to hear their national anthem played. Hard to feel pity, or anything even remotely sympathetic, really, for athletes from a country that made dishonest athletic competition a matter of government policy. The Russian government deliberately and systematically bypassed testing protocols that everyone else had to follow. Pity they didn't hear their national anthem? Meh. To me, it's a pity they were there at all. (Plus, they were using their top-level professional players {KHL} while all the best players from North America and Western Europe {NHL} weren't there.) Just my $0.02; YMMV.
tkdguy
Keep in mind the Russian athletes who were allowed to compete had been cleared by the IOC. Two of them failed the doping test afterwards, but the rest didn't have that problem. In other news, Norway won another gold medal, this time in cross-country skiing. Norway now has 39 medals, 14 of them gold. So they are tied with Germany in the gold medal count, and lead the total medal count. But now they're worried that they're winning too much. On a final note, the Koreans have proven to be excellent hosts. The athletes and fans have been gracious both in victory and defeat. Well done, Pyongchang, and thank you. Kamsahamnida.
