I'm surprised this hasn't been used more often in games. I've played this way, and so have a bunch of GMs I played with.

My, how times have changed; back in the day, we were content with taming the lot.
I playtested this scenario the other day. I had to change a few things to make it viable. The shrews were all 1 hit point creatures, but they automatically got initiative in round 1 and got +1 to initiative rolls after that, as per Basic D&D rules. A successful hit by a shrew prompted a save vs death by the target, where failure meant the target lost his/her attack that round (instead of running away in fear). No gigantic shrew as per the MMO, but that's in the works. The victory condition was that the first to get 10 kills won the contest (50 extra xp); I think I'll allow 20 rounds and everyone who gets 10 kills succeeds in the quest. But the first one who completes it still gets a bonus. Shoes will give 1d4+2 damage. Boots for the biggest shrew get 2d4. Strength modifiers apply.

So, does anyone have demon invasions to report? Places smote with fire and brimstone? 40 days of darkness? Dogs and cats living together? Mass hysteria?
I didn't see any of that, but Cthulhu dropped by to borrow my lawn mower.

Didn't we already do all that last time?

Sister on watching the progression of the eclipse (partial in California):

I'm observbing the eclipse from time to time right now (around 10:30 AM PDT). Nothing much to see just yet.
My mom said a lot of folks (on her social media feed) in the Philippines are scared of the eclipse because everyone will be in darkness. I told my mom to tell her friends not to worry. The eclipse will be seen mainly in North America and a few countries in Western Europe and Oceania. The Philippines will not see it. Nevertheless, the country is under cover of darkness right now.... because it's night time!

From MMO to TTRPG: This quest is available during the Spring Festival:
Amd it just so happens that the giant shrew has been included since the early editions of D&D
Maybe I'll recreate this quest in my next game set in Middle-earth. BTW I really suck at this quest, so I avoid it like the plague.

Trick question or rhetorical question?
SpoilerTheseus sailed to Crete with black sails. He said if he defeated the Minotaur he'd sail home to Athens with white sails. If he was slain, the ship would return with black sails. As it was, he forgot his promise to change the sails despite his victory, and his poor father committed suicide out of grief.

I assume everyone here has sufficient scientific literacy to find this funny.

The Three Days of Darkness concept has been around for many years. I've seen it make the news a couple of times in my life. There's always talk of this whenever solar eclipses occur, despite them being quite common.

Talking with Mom and Sister #2 about the books we're reading. Sister mentions a book she didn't like.
Me: I won't lend you my book (Lions Red and Gold by Scott Anderson). You'd get PO'd. It even says "a peasant's greatest joy is serving his lord."
Me: (paraphrasing a scene from the book involving a noblewoman and a farmer)
"I want almonds."
"I don't have any."
"RUDE!!!" *whack*
Mom: What?!
Sister: Those are the main characters? I just won't read it then.
In case you're wondering about the details, she hit him in the gut with the flat of her dagger, then kicked his shin for good measure.

I was a child, the youngest of three brothers. My father was a Jedi, and he was going to start training me, since being a Jedi was a family business. My brothers were much older and already trained. I had a training lightsaber with a blue blade. It didn't cut, but it could sting. I was being trained in marksmanship, and I was standing on a wall aiming a Luger at a distant target. The training seemed to be VR-based in part, which featured people playing violins. I started tapping my feet to the music, but my father made me stand still so I could shoot straight.
I then had to spend the night meditating under a large tree. I realized there was nothing to be afraid of, since there was only myself and the tree. So I settled down, and a middle-aged lady came by. and we had a pleasant conversation. I was suddenly myself again, and I was aware of my values, both personal and political. I found myself in a table with a group of people. We were playing a board game about life. It involved putting down cards during your turn to advance your position.

Another idea I have rarely, if ever, included in my games is some disaster occurring in the setting. It can be a natural disaster like an earthquake or tsunami, or it can be a plague or epidemic. While they suck in real life, they can provide adventure seeds, from survival to search and rescue to finding a cure. You can find more ideas in this blog.
Edit: While this list repeats much of the previous one, there are a few other ideas, including the repercussions.

"We have lemon curd. This will go great with the Madeleines."
"Curd?"
"Yes."
"Not Iraqi?"
"Get out!"
"NO! I have as much right to this kitchen as you."
"Fine, I'LL get out!"
