Yeah, this argument makes sense.  I was also thinking last night, about when Obama came to my area and promised along the lines   "he would think about our area the first thing in the morning and last thing at night" and how quite a few people here still think he actually did that.  But, I realize what gets me most mad is when a blanket statement about conservatives get dumped when only a few actually apply to it, and that would amount to the same thing.

With respect, you're confusing emotions of the moment with an ongoing delusional mindset. It may be fair to compare the euphoria among the supporters of Barack Obama and Donald Trump just after each of them won the Presidency; but euphoria is not cultist devotion. In the case of Obama that euphoria evaporated rapidly in the dissonance between what he appeared to promise and what he actually delivered. Criticism of him mounted, across the political spectrum. His reelection was devoid of the fervor that characterized his first win, defined by his being more palatable than the Republican alternative to the majority of Americans.

In the case of Trump's core supporters, their euphoria has calcified into unwavering, almost psychotic devotion. They absolutely believe that he's a success, that he's a genius, that he is making America great again (whatever that's supposed to mean). They unquestioningly accept his assertion that immigrants are a threat to America, that the media are the enemies of the people, that there's a Deep State conspiring to prevent him from solving the country's problems. You'll hear them say, with no hint of self-consciousness, that Donald Trump is the greatest President in history, and according to one segment of them, the chosen instrument of God.

No rational argument can sway them. Facts which counter that narrative are disbelieved or ignored. That's the behavior of cultists, which was never in any fashion applied to or encouraged by Barack Obama.

Yeah, for me, I try to (don't claim I always follows through, lacking perfection and all*) go for truth, and let things fall as they may.

I do think we at least have to pretend we can gets things going sooner rather than later.  Doesn't mean we shouldn't push back as necessary.  But, it should be more a month-by-month take.  When you have people talking about 18 months?  Well, there is going to be a lot, a whole lot of suicides.  From both the quarantines driven to despair.  And the essentials who will inevitably break under the strain.  While it was somewhat, largely a necessity,  we have thrown any concerns of mental health completely out.  It isn't going to be realistic to have this go, indefinitely.

Edit: For clarification, don't read too much into this.  Just an observation on how human nature works.

They want to humiliate Trump, whatever cost is worth it to them.  (especially if the harm is to someone else)

THis is also part of why Trump will probably win.  Whatever the majority feels about Trump, they might be more tired of that kind of pettiness, than they are of Trump's.

It's more complicated than that.  I think it depends on the issue.  (some have veered hard right, others not so much).  It's not the linear level that it gets broken down as.

So, I was hanging out in the woods, this one time, and I saw a tent.  Decided a raid would be fun.  Loved the candy, until I found this one bar, damn that thing tasted nasty.

And yeah, I'd like to visit my dad, but he is 78 with diabetes, and 2 years removed from a heart attack, so coronavirus would not be good for him.

Matilda Lawson is Repulse after the battlecruiser her older brother Nigel died on.  She joined in an attempt to avenge him against the Axis powers.

Her power is an experimental battlesuit.  Allowing her to fly and activate a force field to repel any artillery that come her way back towards its point of origin.

Note: hmm, is it modern or WW2 era, I do have a way to bring it into modern times if needed.

Edit:  It being "experimental" eventually there was a malfunction that caused Matilda's death in battle late in 1944. In modern times, her grand-niece and namesake (family honoring the fallen in their family, obviously) an historian, reacquired the battle suit.  And has been slowly having it retrofitted with more modern tech (and hopefully more reliable).  The younger Matilda has always been obsessed with the world wars.  And the rest of the Lawson family says she thinks like she is from the earlier part of the 20th century.  Some of her older relatives wonder if she is in fact a reincarnation of the older Matilda, compelled to come back for some kind of unfinished business.
