I think they could've have found a happy medium, if they wanted.  I never take it as happily forever after.   Rebuilding the Jedi, should be trial and error.  But, going all out to save a relative once (who he didn't personally know, father or not) should have meant he wouldn't turn his back on another relative (one he probably was in attendance for right at birth, and would have 100 times more invested in to save for that fact).

Yeah, that seemed to be what they were talking about at first mentioning  (or possibly a conflict where both sides had many of their regiments augmented with clone soldiers)

Folks seem to be ignoring that, despite his questionable actions during the front half of Return of the Jedi, Luke learned his lesson (indeed, THE lesson of all lessons) when he finally discarded his lightsaber and chose to not give into the dark side of The Force. Seeing characters in the same rut they were in thirty years ago isn't fun. It isn't "cool" or "innovative". It is, at best, uninspired and, at worst, a cynical take on what makes for interesting cinema. We're currently in an age where it seems that everything and everyone good has to be dragged through the mud lest they seem overly saccharine.

I can sort of see Han and Leia being split, that relationship definitely ran hot.  But, yeah, not really a good explanation for not being there.

Obi-wan and Yoda to my knowledge were never shown contemplating murdering someone in their sleep.

Actually my maternal grandmother was born on July 4, 1898   (and ironically died July 5, 1971)

And my paternal grandfather was born on a February 29th.

I will say, if a manager I'd be doing the shift on these dumb hitters too.  Crazy not to.  But, my favorite thing of baseball is great defense, and I feel cheated every time I see on a shift a routine groundout to the 2nd baseman  Short right fielder.

That reminds me of how Daniel Patrick Moynihan defined the difference between liberalism and conservatism. Conservatives, he said, believe that culture sets the limits of politics. Liberals believe that politics can change culture.

I see evidence for both. Optimally, they act as contraries to each curb the excesses of the other: Conservatives to remind liberals that humans are not infinitely malleable, and liberals to point out injustices in the status quo and insist that they can be corrected. At worst they become negations: Conservatives become reactionary apologists for privilege and injustice, while liberals try to burn down the social order because it's social order.

One irony is that -- at least according to one conservative political strategist I heard on All Things Considered -- many American conservatives believe they're losing the culture war or have already lost. So now they are trying to get their way through raw political dominance. Blocking Merrick Garland, a judge everyone said had no political ideology, from the Supreme Court was emblematic: An admission that the conservative agenda does *not* emerge naturally from just following the Constitution.

Anyway, it probably is true that it is stupid to talk about, but given the type of website we are on, it's what we do.

Exactly.  For me, I understand great men sometimes fail, but I occasionally like them to have had a smidgen of success.

That I do find it impossible, to rectify, a man who tried to save his father who he never personally knew to all of a sudden killing a nephew that he had known since birth.  If there is one you would be invested in saving it would be the one you knew since birth.

And the ending felt like a cop out to me.  to be honest.

Vondy, it is jarring in the extreme to end Return of the Jedi with a fully mature and hopeful Luke Skywalker and then jump to another film where he's an acidic monument to cynicism. Also, the same Luke Skywalker that put his life on the line to redeem his FATHER (the second greatest evil in the galaxy) is the same Luke Skywalker that considers murdering his nephew in his sleep? I don't buy it. The Last Jedi tried so damn hard to subvert e-ver-y expectation and suffered because of it.

though I have tended to go more and more to older movies, because 21st century movies seem to have an ever increasing aversion to sensical plot (on average)

I think I can summarize my reaction to the Last Jedi too:

"It was as if millions of voices cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced"

Note:  Ok, maybe not silenced, they're still screaming but anyhow.

Yeah, I couldn't add most of the Luke scenes, due to the character assassination.  So, I guess I got 2 scenes left?   (and the opening scene is marred by a LOT of flaws for me)

I like 4-3 games, a little scoring, a good battle, but earning your successes.

Though the last 100 years have shown, in baseball, pitchers make adjustments, batters just whine till the commissioner juices the ball, or screws up the mound or something.
