  1. Re: Help Requested: Name my Canadian team and it's members Absolument indique. Even for a Canadian national team, this is undoubtedly how they'd be known in Quebec. (But shouldn't that be "La Fleche?")
  2. Re: *What would you like to see: Traveller for HERO A carryover of one of the better elements of Trav Hero: detailed starship building guidelines in HERO System terms. It's one of the more frequent complaints I hear from SH players who want a more detailed breakdown than Hero Games books provide, and would probably lead to purchases by folks who might not buy just for the setting.
  3. Re: Xenovores *Possible Spoilers*
  4. Re: Help Requested: Name my Canadian team and it's members prod, those are beautiful. I'm particularly grooving on Mosaic, although the others are also very cool. (Never would have thought of a "mystic Mountie," but it works.) I can't wait to see the rest of the team.
  5. Re: Xenovores *Possible Spoilers* The greatest information about the Elder Worm is found in the entries for the supervillain Slug from Conquerors, Killers And Crooks and Galactic Champions. The Slug is a noble of their race, and those books detail him, lesser Elder Worms, and some of their artifacts. Reportedly there's a little more about them in the new SH sourcebook, Worlds Of Empire. Essentially, the Elder Worms are an ancient malevolent magic using race, in the style of "Lovecraftian" Horrors from Beyond. They served the Kings of Edom (think Lovecraft's Old Ones), and dominated much of this galaxy, including Earth in the days of Mankind's infancy, until being all but wiped out in a long bitter war with the Malvans. Pockets of the Elder Worms continued to survive in hidden refuges on Earth and other worlds; sometimes secretly ruling the natives, at other times entering a state of dormancy until conditions are ripe for them to awaken and attempt to seize power again. This recent discussion board thread collected all the extant Elder Worm references in Fifth Edition publications: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42952 I will say that if you're looking for vileness in a race to justify their creating something as monstrous as the Xenovores, the Worms would qualify. They have no respect or empathy for any other lifeform, and would reduce all other sentients to either abject slaves, subjects for hideous experimentation, or food.
  6. Re: Luck Options Now this is an interesting observation. Most of the Luck/Fate etc. systems that I've seen in games are very much at the discretion of either the GM or (more often) the player as to when and how to use them. Part of the incentive seems to be to empower the player at critical times, rather than leave them at the mercy of lousy dice rolls. What games have you seen that bring in Luck unexpectedly, and how did they handle it?
  7. Re: Thread Linkage: New Power Ideas I'm amazed I never noticed this before. Rep to you, schir. Nice to know I'm not the only obsessive compiler around here.
  8. Re: Some GMing Advice? Please Strong second to this recommendation. It's the best book of its type available. Still on the Bennie campaign-aid front, you can build quite a few game sessions out of this free PDF of scenario ideas provided by the creative and generous Mr. B: http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/ModulesAndAdventures/PlotGallery1AndAHalf.pdf
  9. Re: Xenovores *Possible Spoilers* There are a number of HERO writeups available for Tyranids, from Warhammer 40,000. Since the Tyranids have numerous similarities in style, motivation and campaign function to Xenovores, they should be fairly easy to adapt to add spice to your Alien Wars campaign. Here's where you can find several interpretations of Tyranids: http://www.tigerseyemedia.com/tiger/40kbugs.html http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26098 http://surbrook.devermore.net/adaptionscreatures/fiction/tyranidlictor.html http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40707 (HDC file for the Lictor writeup above)
  10. Re: Xenovores *Possible Spoilers* As fond as I am of Allen Thomas's writing, I have to admit that I found the Xenovore origin a bit of an anti-climax. Particularly disappointing in comparison to the awesome backstory Allen put into DEMON: Servants Of Darkness.
  11. Re: Luck Options I'm rather fond of Scott Bennie's extrapolation of Luck into his "Luck Pool" system and Luck-based Talents: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21786
  12. Re: Some GMing Advice? Please VR (may I call you VR, or do you prefer Mr. Dragon?) it sounds like you would benefit from the advice on this thread, and the links embedded in it: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9188
  13. Re: NPC Repository If you check the links in the blue banner at the top of this page, the one called "Hero Links" will take you to a wide selection of fan websites covering all areas of HERO gaming. "Champions Links" contains quite a few websites, several of which have large collections of original characters from their campaigns. If you'd like to see writeups for published characters from various comics companies, I suggest clicking on the link in my signature, below, and scrolling down to the bottom of the list, to "Published Comic Book Characters." There are a host of writeups providing different interpretations of many, many of those characters. These are of course in addition to the very good characters published in Hero Games's Champions books, like the ones recommended earlier on this thread, which are part of the official Champs Universe.
  14. Re: Learning Hero Welcome aboard, Direbadger! No need to give up yet - you've come to the right place for help. We're generally a pretty supportive bunch to newcomers. I understand your feeling a little overwhelmed with all the details and options available in HERO. It can be kind of a steep learning curve in the beginning, but once you have the basics of HERO down I think you'll be impressed by how coherent it all is and the range of things you can do with it. HERO System Sidekick really is one of the best intros to the system outside of having a veteran teach you, so I do advise you to stick with it; it will all start to make sense soon. In the meantime, though, there are quite a few free online resources available to help both you and your players get up to speed on the game: For starters, you might want to check out these general FAQ about the game which will clarify some of the basic assumptions: http://www.herogames.com/SupportFAQs/workingherosystem.htm From this next page, you can download free PDFs which introduce the basic mechanics of the system, summarize the combat sequence, and provide guidelines and examples of how to use the system to run various game genres. The first two make particularly good player handouts: http://www.herogames.com/FreeStuff/freedocs.htm This discussion-board thread contains fairly detailed run-throughs of character generation, probably the most involved element of HERO (due to the many options available). These should supplement the example in Sidekick to give you a better understanding of the process: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3864 Next to chargen, combat in HERO involves the most mechanical detail, particularly if you introduce some of the many optional elements. While there is a combat example in Sidekick, this thread provides two further detailed narrative examples, one for "heroic" level (fantasy) combat, the other for supers. You'll get a good feel for the flow of combat from these: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3210 This next thread was created to provide advice to someone in just your position: a new HERO GM with newbie players. It also has links to other useful resources: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9188 Should you be interested in HERO writeups of characters based on published comics, either to use as is or as examples for your players' writeups, there are an enormous number fan-generated ones on the Internet. I suggest you click on the link in my signature, below, and scroll down to the bottom of the list, to "Published Comic Book Characters." You should also feel free to come back here with any other questions you may have. We all love to show how much we know. I think you'll find that HERO, and the HERO community, will bring you much gaming goodness.
  15. Re: Is it just me? (Or does this mini look like Ripper?) Yep, that metal crotch is looking more and more like a good idea.
  16. Re: How to stat this out... if I should? Hmm... I was under the impression that you can't use Transfer to add any abilities that a character doesn't already have. House-ruling Transfer so that it can work that way (perhaps with a Custom Advantage) would perhaps be the cleanest way to handle the "Rogue dilemma."
  17. Re: Is it just me? (Or does this mini look like Ripper?) Dang! Nearly an exact match just the way he is, down to the color scheme. I wouldn't be at all surprised if the creator of this figure actually based it on Ripper - the character's illo has been in public circulation for many years.
  18. Re: Algernon Files from Black Wyrm Games (Cross Post) You'll find some general responses and links to detailed online reviews of the book, on this thread: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=36841
  19. Re: Looking for skills help CC, I don't know if you're familiar with this website, but I suggest browsing the Background Skills list. I noticed a few that seemed particularly pertinent to your character, but some of the more general stuff may strike your fancy.
  20. Re: Shazam! Well, playing around a bit with the Mesopotamian gods and mythic figures, I came up with: Negium! Ninurta (Courage) Enlil (Power) Girru (Speed) Ishtar (Stamina) Utu (Wisdom) Marduk (Strength)
  21. Re: Taipan...wow! I'm thinking of running a test combat between Taipan and the Weasel from High Tech Enemies, the 4E CU's toughest super-assassin. I'll be interested to see if Taipan can avoid Weasel's eviscerating claws long enough to wear him down.
  22. Re: Casual Survey: Age of players and Hero's utility vs. other games Here is a previous poll on this subject, with a (relatively) good sized sampling and detailed results: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32079 Of course any survey based on this community is unreliable, because it's from the small segment of HERO gamers that posts to this website, and the even smaller number who see this topic and respond to it.
  23. Re: Review of Rescue at Karadonna Allow me : https://secure.compnetco.com/herogames/browse.jsp?categoryID=7
  24. Re: Intelligent/Sentient Weapons AI Characteristics are the basis for the official guidelines for creating sentient weapons and the like; but they're elaborated further in the Fifth Edition Fantasy HERO genre book, under "Sentient Artifacts," p. 279. However, you can view several such weapons written up by the estimable Michael "Susano" Surbrook via this webpage: specifically, the swords Grospolina, Stormbringer, and the Sword of Kas.
