I am sure, if DC does a Shazam movie, he will be an orphan, which he is, who was abused by his drugged out parents who OD'd, and the orphanage he is in will be run by the equivalent of Fagan.

I read once that the creator of the original Captain wanted to call him "Captain Thunder," but the editor thought that name would be too frightening to children.

Would have been a cool-sounding modern rebrand, though.

If that's still the magic word he speaks to change from super to mortal, wouldn't that be kind of awkward?

It's a bit of a middle finger to DC, too, since they're developing a movie starring the hero they can't publically call Captain Marvel.

I guess when the character's history goes back twenty-five years before that. The majority of villains identified with Spidey's "rogues gallery" debuted during the first decade of his title: Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, Kraven the Hunter, Sandman, the Lizard, Mysterio, the Scorpion, Electro, the Vulture, the Rhino... I'm sure I'm forgetting someone.

Even in 1988 when Venom debuted, his style foreshadowed the "Iron Age" of comics, which lots of longer-term fans view as "post-classic." (Personally I despise the character, but that's irrelevant to this discussion.)

I thought, for the most part, McGuire was the better Parker, and Garfield was the better Spider-Man

Personally, I'm fine with Fox retaining the X-characters. Those titles have practically been their own continuity within the Marvel Comics universe for decades, not really meshing with the rest of the setting. But their other super-properties easily could, and IMHO should be integrated into the MCU.

Cinematic Ultron has been a polarizing villain for a lot of people. Some fans really wanted a cold, menacing, "robotic" Ultron more reminiscent of the comics. Despite that being a type of villain we've seen literally thousands of times before... and complained about in other Marvel movies. I'm one of those who likes the sarcastic, arrogant, childish Ultron from the movie. It's a fresh take that interested and entertained me more.

But Iron Man and Iron Man II started the pattern of tying elements of the individual films into a bigger continuity, as all the Marvel Studios films have to a lesser or greater extent. IMHO that doesn't detract from them being good self-contained stories. And this is just a continuation of the Marvel Comics experience. Since the 1960s the Marvel characters have crossed over, interacted with each other, and developments from one series have spilled over into others.

Disputes between directors and studios are common in Hollywood. That doesn't necessarily mean one side or another is unusually difficult to work with. Whenever you have more than one creative, strong-minded person with a vision involved in a project, there are bound to be disagreements. And those disagreements will color their perceptions of the parties involved. (I have to note that I've yet to hear Kevin Feige say anything negative about any past Marvel directors.)

I remember that after Iron Man 3 came out, Feige revealed the studio worried over how what Shane Black wanted to do with the Mandarin would be received by the fans. They let him do it anyway.

And honestly, more than once I've read negative comments about Marvel attributed to an actor or director, which said actor or director later disavows ever having made. Some people in the industry make a business out of stirring up controversy.
