  1. Re: Without fusion power, why go back to the moon? As far as stepping stones to the Big Black, the moon has some advantages over asteroid mining (and vice versa). Lunar conditions are fairly well understood, so there's less research budget needed. Lunar gravity, small as it is, allows for the adaptation of many designs from terrestrial machines that don't work right in full zero-g and the Moon makes a nice big catchers mitt for payloads being lobbed homewards for use back on the Blue Marble, if we ever do get harvesting operations going
  2. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Yeah, I was way into all those Lost World Action Romances back when I was a kid too. I've been trying to remember which one had a Big Game Hunter as a supporting character who elected to stay behind when everyone is escaping back to civilization, because the T-Rex is now his ultimate challenge.
  3. Re: Cloud cities of Venus: I am totally gonna use this idea! Yeah, wind turbines are the obvious primary power source. I'm thinking some form of skyhook is gonna be your best best for landing/docking. Starwhale, maybe?
  4. Re: Cloud cities of Venus: I am totally gonna use this idea! Not to mention being able to suck electricity directly out of the atmosphere sounds like an awesome emergency backup system....
  5. Re: Cloud cities of Venus: I am totally gonna use this idea! Actually, it could be de-steampunked to be a very practical green power source. Presuming for the moment an H2SO4 atmosphere, your colony will be cracking water and oxygen out of the atmosphere, so you could probably design it into the intake phase of the process as essentially "free" power. Could probably make at least life support self systems self powering, which might make a nice fail safe in colony design.
  6. Re: Cloud cities of Venus: I am totally gonna use this idea! If you use lead as your primary resistance coating against the sulfuric acid atmosphere, you're going to build up lead sulfate surface corrosion pretty quickly unless you glass coat the hull, but yeah, you have the components of a Lead Acid battery right there, and more could probably be done with entendable arrays of power generation grids. I think you need to dilute the acid to get a proper electrolytic balance, so water becomes your consumable. I'm pretty sure there are other Cathode/Anode pairs that could work as well, but I'm kinda brain fried and rum soaked at the moment.... Of course, the waste water could be redistilled by using it in the steam plants...
  7. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. well done indeed the secret to comedy is timing, and waiting 25 years for the perfect straight line is epic timing...
  8. Re: The cranky thread So, as soon as I had my wheels back, I took a road trip up to visit the girlfriend. Really, REALLY, bad idea. Waaaayyyyyyyy too soon. Upsides.... I finally got to see the Avengers, and I guess there is less ambiguity in my life Downsides. ... I guess I'm single again.
  9. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Sweeney Todd The motion picture soundtrack. while honing my new straight razor
  10. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. "Where lieth the line 'tween auteur and hipster my friend...WHERE?" & "You occasionally make my brain bleed, but generally in a good way" me, in an Online Chat with my ex boss after checking out some of the puppeteering he's done this last year
  11. Re: Musings on Random Musings letsee, Evidence of Evil in instruments. *puts on inquisitor hat* England banned bagpipes. Evil! Harps too, at one point: Evil! "Play an accordion, go to jail!" semi-common bumper sticker: Evil. on the other hand, I'm being tapped to provide skimpy leather outfits for the Accordion Babes calander, and a particular redhead I know... Who am I kidding...EVIL I think Hurdy Gurdy's, Theremins, pipe organs, and combolins should also qualify for Evil, just based on the players I've known and piccolos. Because Shoggoths like them....
  12. Re: A Thread for Random Videos Every Major's Terrible, from XKCD, put to music rather well
  13. Re: The cranky thread Thanks everybody. I'm still a little bit stunned. here's a link for those interested in more details And I think I'm gonna go spin off a new thread. This might provoke a lot of talk.

  16. Re: The cranky thread And it keeps on coming. Just found out the owner of a store in Santa Cruz who'd been considering carrying my work was stabbed to death in broad daylight down the street from her boutique. She was 38, and one the good guys. Damn.
  17. Re: Where do your chars put their XPs? Our FH games tended towards high starting points, so most of our characters were mostly concept complete at creation. This led to the majority of XP's being saved till the end of a campaign arc and being spent during character downtime.
  18. Re: "Neat" Pictures Awwww... scruffy kittyface Edit: just saw the above post... is the kitteh named Rags? I have a Rags as well, a calico (well, Ragamuffin, actually, but Rags for short).
  19. Re: A Thread for Random Videos Eric Fick, aka Baby Dav, is the younger brother of Stephen "Davenriche" Fick, one of my oldest sparring partners and friends. Eric went ahead and married the girl I'd be crushing on for years. He's kin. He is now one of the top instructors at DEMAS, The Davenriche European Martial Arts School, and won a slot on Team USA at The Battle of the Nations. It went down last weekend. Here's Team USA versus Team Poland in a 21x21 slugfest. The guy on the USA (screen left) team who's farthest from the camera, wielding a great-sword and first to advance? That's Baby Dav. I'm pretty stoked for him. I remember him as an awkward 16 year old
