  1. Re: Take a Teammate to a Movie Yeah, Blackjack tends to subscribe to the "To hell with fate" approach as well, which was why I immediately thought of 13th Warrior and Equilibrium. Both have strong "why we fight" messages
  2. Re: "Realistic" gun damage Indeed. Good summary. I might quibble on a couple of points, but it's mostly a style thing... There are a few places I'd use Semi AP, like the early Rod penetrators, Hardened doesn't stop Penetrating anymore, and in this context probably shouldn't. HESH munitions were largely abandoned with the adoption of spall guards eliminating most of their lethal effect, and modern composites are designed to prevent a propagating wave from causing spallation as well, so Impermeable shouldn't be all that uncommon. Steve's technique of dropping on a continuous uncontrolled 1 pip RKA to represent incendiary effects is kinda clunky, but works. Semi AP and Piercing are both GREAT for adding additional diversification to weapon effects. Unfortunately for realism, HERO doesn't really have much of a system for modeling the kind of secondary damage effects that most heavy weapons are built to take advantage of, unless you get super detailed on your write ups. One of our long gone posters, (FOX something or another) totally reworked modern combat writeups to reflect these sorts of things, but I don't think he still has it up.
  3. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Speaking of 70's anime, anyone else remember Yusha Raideen? I remember watching it on SF channel 20 back in '75-'76, and being deeply offended when they co-opted Raideen into The Shogun Warriors a few years later. Possibly one of my first true encounters with nerd-rage
  4. Re: The cranky thread Funemployemnt time!
  5. Re: Take a Teammate to a Movie Given the circumstances, and my own proclivities (Mirrored pretty closely by my main PC, Blackjack, who has spent a lot of time teaching and training another teen hero from similar social circumstances), I'd go for either The Thirteenth Warrior or Equilibrium, depending on how the mood was running. Tho, yeah.. Princess Bride is another excellent option. Ooooh... or possibly Lilo and Stitch Man, this is hard..
  6. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. I was expressing my annoyance to a co-worker, that another forced a confrontation between my boss and I before I'd intended the subject to be raised, thus leaving me arguing my point from a point of weakness and having to roll over and show my throat. He's fond of her (as am I) and sprung to her defense, to which I shrugged.. "She just got her degree in Developmental Psych. Her head right now is all full of aggression behavior patterns and conflict resolution. Mine is full of Sun Tzu, Musashi, Machiavelli and Nietzsche. What she did was perfectly right if we were trying to get along. Unfortunately, this is politics."
  7. Re: More space news! It'd be nice to have roots...
  8. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Aisling was easily the best screen portrayal of a faerie I've seen to date. Edit: Post-script: The funny thing is, I'd been kinda hemming and hawing about watching this one because of the obvious Christian themes, and because I was worried about how they'd portray the Northmen. Then I saw the opening credits...
  9. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Just finished watching Secret of Kells It was awesome!
  10. Re: The cranky thread Heh, with your help I figured out what "Plumb sucks" means... No matter which way you turn, or where you go, it still swings back to suck Thanks , m'man, I appreciate the thoughts. I'm like, a king with LTR's, but this is still gonna suck.
  11. Re: What Are You Listening To Right Now? Lots of Corries, mostly a mix of Jacobite fight songs and romantic laments. I'm in a mood
  12. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? Started watching Terra Nova, and thus far I'm pretty impressed. The writing's been very solid, and the cast is good.
  13. Re: The cranky thread Ugh. I feel your pain. Jack-hammers the last two mornings while they work on the fence next door
  14. Re: Planetary Resources In all seriousness, this is awesomesauce. I've been waiting for this with indrawn breath for so long I'm blue in the face, and I'm extra double happy that the folk behind it are generally more or less the good guys. In the face of this news, has there been any comment from the "We should return to the gold standard" crowd? Because their clock is ticking
  15. Re: Ladies and Gentlemen of the Jury #1: Security Robot Zaps Burglar Wouldn't have ever made it to court in our campaign. There were clear precedents in place for the employ of sub-lethal defensive systems and weapons, considering the proliferation of non-lethal technology in a Champions setting, and their use by elite security forces. The mighty ones of mundane society you mentioned, the 1%ers, would be quick to legally establish their ability to defend themselves against the likes of super villains or VIPER squads
  16. Re: The cranky thread This plumb sucks. My girlfriend is moving back to the mountains from whence she came (more or less). we're not breaking up, per se, but the distance is going to put a serious strain on things. She's doing it because the little slice of suburb life has stranded me in is seriously depressing her, and I approve of her need to go get a (new) life, but man are there a lot of things I'm going to have to sort out in the next couple of weeks, all while swallowing down the vast huge ball of fear and depression of my own. On the plus side, maybe this'll finally give me enough space to get my stuff sorted out.
  17. Re: The Treasure Thread damn you both. I had nearly forgotten those books
  18. Re: Order of the Stick why do I get this sense of foreboding, and keep having flashbacks of Deathstroke dismantling the Teen Titans
  19. Re: What is the strangest super power you have allowed from a SFX? On behalf of my dear departed friend Dan Popovitch, creator of Zodo the Bouncing Barfing Frog, I'd like to thank everyone for the Rep avalanche. Miss ya buddy.
  20. Re: A Thread for Random Videos thought this looked cool, and is an interesting approach for indie developer to take Amanita Design just put up a Humble Bundle of their work, pay what you will
  21. Re: Science for the Win! "Mark this well, you proud men of action! You are, after all, nothing but unconscious instruments of the men of thought." -Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel
  22. Re: Musings on Random Musings In a world gone mad, where organized crime has become synonymous with big business, the genius who spends his fortune building rocket ships and electric cars is a role model, not a super-villain.
  23. Re: What is the building in which a mason works called? makes total sense, as the bulk of my serious research-level reading has been almost exclusively Renaissance period, so those tend to be the first thoughts that bubble up
