  1. Re: Dark New England (A Lovecraftian Potterverse Campaign in America) A couple of other ideas I'm using in my background could work well with what you've laid out. We have several major pentagonal forts on the east coast. Including, of course, The Pentagon. I have Kro, the Great Hunger, the Great Old One who devoured the English colony at Roanoke, bound by Franklin and his Lodge brothers beneath the future site of the Pentagon, with lesser terrors entombed under the smaller forts. In my world breaking the seal was the intent of the Pentagon bound plane on 9/11. Ben Franklin, Archwizard of the New World, traveling the Colonies with his Masonic companions to seal away the elder nightmares of North America in order to make the new country safe to grow. Sounds like it'd make an awesome webcomic...

I've been kinda pondering some similar questions in using a Lovecraft Mythos theme for my PA setting, because I'm eventually going for a semi-light toned Girl Genius homage setting, but with crawling cosmic horrors lurking in the dark corners of the world. The nice thing about using the mythos without much actual God level intervention is that the sundry roster of lesser critters make a great bestiary. You can play crypto-zoologist and determine which servitors were the source of which monster legends and rename them appropriately in common usage. You can mine Hellboy for all sorts of ideas. The Charlie Stross Laundry books are an interesting take on the Lovecraftian mythos, and his style of cyber-necromancers could be a controversial topic in the wizarding community, using "unsafe" ancient lore restrained and contained by the precision equipment available in the Information Era. Silicon Valley Technomancy?

Actually, thinking about it, it wouldn't be hard to hand mill sabots with a hobby lathe, or a CAD mill could crank them out to order in double time, and you can get some NASTY penetration with a proper 12 gauge sabot. Stick with something comparatively easy to manufacture and with multi-mission functionality. The heavy stuff really isn't that much harder to make, however, and still is kinda the queen of defense, although in thinning the herd like this I'd totally use a .22, magnum for preference, LR otherwise, because it's bloody easy to pinpoint shoot with and its everywhere.

  6. Re: Future submarine warfare? The team that made Twisted Metal did a Submarine combat game... Ahhh. found it... Critical Depth Was a fairly awesome game, and it did put me in mind that it'd be fun to do a totally submarine PA game, all submarine settlements, mining outposts, say 30-40 years in the future with serious investment in underwater infrastructure and settlement, then the surface was rendered uninhabitable. Solar activity or particle bombardment from a gamma ray burster would be good choices. Global freeze, maybe? A lot of this, I admit, dates back to my fascination with submarine dome cultures because they we such the rage back in my youth.

While's it's a bit of a thread de-rail, just gotta say I find it kinda amusing that some gamers have who have no problem accepting rubber science like superpowers and FTL travel balk at reanimating corpses. The Zombie Survival Guide throws a whole chapter into explaining (in more plausible sounding pseudoscience than your average Treknobabble) how a z-type virus could do it's thing.

No Survival Instinct -Physical Complication: Zombies don't defend themselves, don't take evasive action, and move predictably most of the time. All Hit Location Penalties are halved for purposes of aiming, just as if they had been Surprised Out of Combat

But the chances that the target of the group monkey dance will also be a suicidally depressed Norse pagan, multiple martial arts trained professional fighter in his prime, who is also the team captain of the west coast champion shinty team and who is already nursing a powerful urge to destroy everything in sight. Fun facts... I never once even got scared. or, in fact responded, other than with a growing smile. and I have no idea what Alpha Monkey was saying. Wasn't even listening. I was already past how I was going to kill him and planning how to start in on his buddies by the time he started talking. I PRE attacked my way out of it, because I was looking forward to it. At the time, the idea of a no holds barred fight with a gang of idiots seemed like a godssend.

Re: Let's Discuss: The Modern Wandering Adventurer "I've learned all the rules of a modern day drifter, don'tcha hold on to nuthin' to long."-Waylon Jennings I spent almost a decade essentially persona non grata, living off radar and mostly supporting myself through the grey market (and busking), and from that perspective I'd suggest it's still quite doable, but, yeah, it does beg certain skills. off the top of my head, Streetwise is pretty much required... living like this will school you quickly if you start out without it. Survival (Urban) likewise. Probably some wilderness Survival as well, but that's less an issue. You won't always land work or a crash space. Some easy-hire money earning skills. Possibly even Jack of All Trades. Freelance work, anything creative, skilled labor (carpenter, construction, plumber, electrician, stagehand), bouncer, bartender, event security.... any of these are decent examples People skills come in darn handy. Conversation is probably the most important, but Persuasion is a close second
  17. Re: The cranky thread A friend of mine died last Friday, sitting at his desk. Sleep Apnea plus Pneumonia. He was my junior by several years. I can't shake the feeling that he died from being too poor for proper medical coverage and too proud to work the system and go to the ER for a "cough".

As a freely admitted Genre Fiend, I can understand where you're coming from. the kind of narrative events you describe imply a need for a narrativist mechanism to enable them. You could implement an on-the-spot, use-it-or-lose-it HeroPoint reward system for Roleplaying or excellent play, right off the top of my head

  20. Re: Quote of the Week From My Life. I in fact have a suite of them as well. ADHD, Dyslexia & Dysgraphia foremost among them. I am lucky enough to be pretty much a bona fide genius, so I taught myself to read at 3. Almost everything I learned was self taught, although I did work with a dyslexia specialist tutor around 3rd & 4th grade to overcome my output problems... I mentally built my own workarounds for the input side but making what I was thinking translate properly in writing took quite a while for me to learn. The common teaching methods of the 70's and 80's did very little to advance my learning, in general.

  23. Re: Dungeons, suitable for crawling or delving? I have to admit, I really dig the GW/Warhammer style ratmen. Skaven was my first and favorite army, and I've always admired the aesthetic and culture they developed for them. That, and I really dig Lankhmar style city games, but have never really gotten into the whole wererat thing. this sort of thing would be perfect for that style of ratmen... a few infiltrators have set up camp deep in the sewers are are leaving out bait for the local sewer rats that is changing them, first making them fearless and aggressive, then gradually mutating them. Or It could be a side effect of a mutenagenic toxin used by assassins being ingested in minute amounts by said sewer rats when they consume the corpses the assassins ditch in the sewers. Investigating the funny acting rats leads to the part of the sewer with the giant rats, which leads to the larger mystery...
