  2. Re: I need a function! At one time, Dr Infamous, tired of his lousy reputation, attempted a bit of PR. His idea was to write a number of stories which featured himself as a brilliant and brave hero. His plan was to have these stories published in one or more of the then-popular "pulp" magazines. The first of these stories was titled "The Vegan Corollary" (that's Vegan as in "of or from Vega"). It was a silly plan anyway, but what made it dumber was that "The Vegan Corollary" contained a detailed description of Dr. I's Anti-Auto Ray, which caused gasoline to become non-combustible. This weapon Dr. Infamous had already used a couple of time (not more often, as it was so heavy it had to be disassembled and reassembled elsewhere). When "The Vegan Corollary" was mailed to a publisher, a sharp-eyed and quick-thinking editor forwarded it to The Mallard, masked crimefighter and Dr. Infamous's nemesis. The Mallard was able to deduce such information as wasn't in the manuscript, as well as a way to nullify the Anti-Auto Ray. Then The Mallard tricked Dr. Infamous into using the Anti-Auto Ray. At the opportune moment, The Mallard nullified the fiendish weapon, and captured Dr. Infamous! And justice triumphed! In addition, the manuscript seems to have disappeared; The Mallard swore he had no idea what happened to it, and no-one has found it since. Dr. Infamous and The Mallard are non-registered un-trademarks of Basil's Twisted Imagination, Unincorportated. NEXT: The Tangled Wep (yes, that's how I meant to spell it)

  4. Re: "Neat" Pictures At this time of year, it's possible to see Zodaical Light and Sun Pillars. This next picture is so gorgeous, I'm going to see if APoD allows hotlinking. EDIT: No. OK, then, here's THE LINK
  5. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... No, no, no! Rocket propelled chainsaws! :eg: :eg:
  6. That is to say, here's some news bits about brown dwarfs: A) What may be the closest brown dwarf. What may be the dimmest brown dwarfs. C) General info about brown dwarfs, including the fact they seem to be pretty common.
  7. So the party contains an Explorer or a Professor or a Scientist or maybe a Great White Hunter or (most of all) a Wild Man. Or even two (or more) such archetypes. Where do you take them? "The jungle!" is the obvious choice, but that raises the question, "which jungle?" May I recommend a non-obvious choice---the Mekong jungle! From 1997 to 2007, nearly 1100 new species were found in the Mekong jungle. (Article here) Those species include a spider with a 30 cm leg span! The centipede that produces cyanide is nothing to laugh at, either. Compared to those, the rat that was wrongly thought to have gone extinct 11,000,000 years ago doesn't seem like much. Until you apply imagination to it... Just think what might have been missed by this decade-long investigation. Or that disappeared between, say, 1927 and 1997. Add some headhunters, a golden idol and/or ruined temple, and the scenario nearly writes itself.

  9. Re: help need ninjas I'm sorry, this is Pulp; you cannot have ninjas. You have to use dacoits. See Pulp HERO, p. 406.
  10. Re: The Voynich Manuscript Ah yes. This thing keeps coming up on this forum. All kinds of pulpy goodness. Unfortunately, it has long since been shown to be a fake. See this thread, especially my post, and the links from it. Still, no reason not to have it be real in your pulp campaign.
  11. Re: A mathematical difficulty
  12. Re: Slow Space Elevator Significant goof in the article. First, it's the Coriolis effect; it is NOT a force. Second and more important, it refers to the effect of moving north or south; in or out is simple inertia. As others have said, this "bug" has been known about for a long time. People go on weeks-long cruises just to land up where they started. Why is a week long "cruise" to outer space somehow inconceivable?
  13. Re: A Game Of Questions How can you even think of such a thing?????
  14. Re: BODY into STUN The "Damage Conversion" power is interesting. The Armour write up does exactly what I was thinking about! Thanks, and rep to you! BTW --- Hyper-Man, the "Killing Attack Only" Lim is interesting, but I don't think it's necessary for "bullet-proof spandex." Still, if you want to do it that way, fine by me.
  15. Re: I need a function! Back in the 1930's, in the days of Mad Scientists galore, one of the maddest was the infamous Dr. Infamous, whose death rays, shrinking rays, destruction rays, and Killer Death Robots were all powered by a mysterious, unknown source. When Dr. I was finally brought to justice by The Mallard, masked crime-fighter and master of the mystic arts of Uzbekistan, it was revealed what that power source was. The Bad Doctor had invented a battery of fabulous potential! Mixing the elements erbium, phosphorus, and arsenic in just the right proportions, then subjecting the mixture to x-rays, created charged particles that could hold enormous electrical charges. While Dr. Infamous called the substance "megachargium," it was known to scientists as the As-P-Er Ion; curiously, due to a typo in an early report, journalists (and to the public) called it "Asp-Er-Ion." ---------------------------------------------------- Next: The Last Dictionary

  18. Re: Order of the Stick Actually, it was a misprint. It should have been WHAC0. As in "BANG0, SLASH0, THUMP0, WHAC0. And DOT.
  19. Re: A Game Of Questions Is ANYTHING like "Robin Hood: Men in Tights"?
  20. Re: Quote of the Week from my gaming group... It wasn't a lie! Considering there are approximately 3.75924 gazillion alternate Earths, it's a certainty that at that exact moment, in at least one universe, Hulk was indeed on the loose. Since CA didn't say where Hulk was, his statement was undoubtedly true. Basil contemplates how many alternate palindromedaries there are...
  21. Re: Multiform help and advice. I suggest adding AoE Radius---or Explosion---No Range, Personal Immunity. To rephrase: Taking "No Range" on a power does not affect the size of an Area of Effect, nor of an Explosion. NB: Personal Immunity protects only yourself. Hole in the Middle protects everybody who is close enough to you, even people you'd rather weren't protected.
  22. Re: A Game Of Questions How long do you keep your Halloween pumpkin?
  23. Re: A Game Of Questions What new laws are they promoting?
  24. Mysterious pyramid! Heretofore unknown ancient culture! Curious stone sculptures! Artifacts! Read all about it!! Add degenerate remnants of a once-great empire, Nazis, and a two-fisted archaeologist, and the scenario practically writes itself!
