  1. A recent posting on the Squadron UK Yahoo! group gave a link for a new range of superhero miniatures, about to go into production. Thought it might be of interest to anyone looking for some different sculpts: http://www.blackhat.co.uk/superhero.asp

  3. Re: Regency HERO Resources A quick reminder to Regency fans: Beau Brummell: This Charming Man will be shown on BBC Four in the UK tomorrow, Monday June 19th, at 21.00. Advance clips look promising.
  4. Re: Greatest Post-Apoc Film of All Time Good choice; and I'm not only saying that because Jenny Agutter gets her top off (as if I would be so shallow...) I heard a rumour that a remake is on the cards. Seems unnecessary to me. Mind you, I wouldn't mind watching the series again, which I've not seen since it was first aired. As for Six-String Samurai, it's been on my "To See" list since I read Jared Sorensen's OctaNe game. Really must track down a copy.
  5. Re: Regency HERO Resources Regency fans in the UK can look forward to a new programme from the Beeb about Beau Brummell: http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcfour/cinema/features/beau-brummell.shtml Hopefully it will make its way west before too long.
  6. Re: Now Taking Preorders For the Champions 25th-Anniversary Special Edition! You're a roleplayer and you know girls? Wow... Times have changed.
  7. For those of you not checking the wonderful Terra Incognita website at http://www.nagssociety.com I thought I'd pass along the following link: http://www.capsu.org is a site all about the wonders of capsule pipelines, from the small tubes still seen in some shops and banks (and the subject of a nifty sequence in The Shadow movie, if memory serves) right up to the sadly failed plans to make a subway based on the same principle. Access the original information superhighway... and don't forget to duck.
  8. Re: Fringeworthy Hero & the Battery Delima. I thought about this quite a bit when I first read Fringeworthy and eventually hit upon the answer: The potato. Ever seen those novelty digital clocks that work by plugging them into a potato? Well, let's just scale that up a bit... ahem... and take a truck load of spuds through the portal. Potato-powered cars, energy weapons... digital clocks... When I said I thought about this quite a bit I may perhaps have been exaggerating. Slightly.
  9. Re: Sonic Screwdrivers An interesting addition to Sonic Screwdriver lore from tonight's episode of Doctor Who (without spoilers, I think): Apparently it can't open something that has been "deadlock sealed." Quite what this means isn't detailed, but the Doctor encounters both an alien computer and a storage drum which have this feature and the screwdriver can't help. By the way, it's a terrific episode: Guest-starring Elisabeth Sladen, Anthony Head and K-9! Good heavens, for a moment I was six years old again.
  10. Re: Sonic Screwdrivers The trouble with the Sonic Screwdriver is that you're trying to model something which generally only existed as a plot device. Its limitations are variable and rarely discussed. I'd just go with the major uses of it, bearing in mind that it's not a weapon even though the Doctor sometimes pretends that it is, when he has to bluff. And it does have its limits. Remember Tom Baker's marvellous goggle-eyed aside to camera where he remarks, "Not even the Sonic Screwdriver can get me out of this one!" ?
  11. Re: Infinite Worlds Sounds like just the thing for my Fringeworthy conversion (another excellent world-hopping game, by the way).
  12. Re: Interesting news. But of course! There's an excellent photograph of an orange one at this site: http://workingfromhome.allinfoabout.com/dyson_pt1.html
  13. Re: Adamant's upcoming Mars book Well, absolutely. Don't think for a moment that I'm planetary romance trying to influence you in any way, sir...
  14. Re: Victorian Women's Art of Self Defense You know, this all seems terribly complicated. Standard self-defence for women through the ages has generally been a swift kick to the bloke's knackers, which I think is already covered in the rules...
  15. Re: Adamant's upcoming Mars book Ooo... Looks like it's time to start dropping subliminal messages into my planetary romance posts to jog Steve's mental elbow on this one...
  16. Re: Victorian Hero Resources Forgotten Futures (mentioned briefly above) is a stunningly useful resource. The game is great, but what really raises it to the top of the pile is the astonishing amount of period material and fiction that Marcus Rowland has managed to cram onto the CD-R (or you can download if you prefer, and aren't living in the age of dial-up as I am). Much of this is scanned from Victorian periodicals and books, so it's worth getting the collection just as a source of handouts and great reading. I'm also fond of http://www.nagssociety.com which supports the Terra Incognita RPG. Again, a lovely game but the site goes way beyond it and adds several useful links each week. Excellent job, QM. Thank you.
  17. Re: Link for Doctor Who fans The Beeb are starting to show teasers for the new series, but without saying precisely when it will begin (sometime this month, though). At least we know that a third series has been confirmed, which is good news.
  18. Re: You've taken over the world. Now what? There is a way to find out for yourself: http://www.nationstates.net lets you create a country and then have a go at running it, deciding policy and security issues, based on Max Barry's excellent novel Jennifer Government. I can't say that you'll get the most realistic simulation around, but it's free and fun. Tragically there appears to be no option for the bikini-clad concubines, which has suddenly put a damper on my view of the game Big Jack Brass, Heavy-handed Leader of the Grand Duchy of Wackfondler.
  19. As Doctor Who seems to be a popular addition to Star HERO games you might find the following site of interest: http://mateengreenway.com/drwho/drwho.htm The new series, by the way, starts in the UK sometime in April. No news on other countries as yet.

  21. Re: Comprehensive Pulp Resources List I have a decent list of Drummond sources on file, which I'll copy below. Unfortunately I've lost the original source for this information, so apologies to whoever posted it on the 'net originally. Bulldog Drummond Bulldog Drummond is a British fictional character created by "Sapper", a pseudonym of H. C. McNeile (1888-1937), in imitation of the hard boiled noir-style detectives appearing in contemporary American fiction. The stories followed Captain Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond, D.S.O., M.C., a former WWI Army officer who had set up his own private detective business after the war. The stories, like the character, were often direct and brutal, and often rang of jingoism and racism. The character first appeared in the novel Bulldog Drummond (1920), and was adapted into a number of films and radio serials. In 2004, Moonstone Books released a Bulldog Drummond comic book written by William Messner-Loebs and illustrated by Brett Barkley . Kim Newman's short story "Pitbull Brittan", published in 1991, was a savage parody both of Bulldog Drummond and of the state of England under Margaret Thatcher, and featured the eponymous adventurer's battle against an international conspiracy responsible for the 1984 Miners' Strike. *** Edit: Just remembered another old favourite, worth looking into: Dick Barton, Special Agent was a radio series, and at least one adventure is available on tape from the BBC.
  22. Re: New Millennium: Worth mining? So the consensus seems to be that the line has some good bits if the price is right. I just picked up a copy of Bay City for 99p, which is about $1.60... I think I should get my money's worth for that
  23. Having found interesting titbits aplenty in old HERO books I noticed that the Champions: the New Millennium line goes for a song on eBay and the secondhand market. Is there anything worth buying these books for to add to a current Champions game, or has it all been covered elsewhere?
