The original version of Seeker might make a good choice for that role.  He was always very well connected and had a good temperament what with that whole seeking seeking the ultimate question/ the “glow” thing.
Put Mel Gibson in a wheelchair for a character reference your players can latch onto immediately and you’re good to go.

Part of the problem with future history, as well as alternate history, is that there isn't just one destination.  You really have to work backwards, defining some part of where you want to be, and how things work in around that.

Also, you have to bear in mind that the Champions Universe functions, at least somewhat, along narrative lines.  Being a comic book/superhero setting means some things that really shouldn't work in the real world, do.  Not just superpowers and super-tech, but a criminal syndicate like VIPER being able to operate underground in the US.  Where I'm going with this right now is that on a certain level, superheroes exist because there are supervillains to be stopped.  If the age of superheroes is coming to an end, it should also correspond to the age of supervillains ending.  If you want to go that way, there just aren't as many new supervillains popping up.  Supercrime is trending down.  The heroes might ponder whether their kind of extraordinary response is really needed anymore.

And if they do reverse the mana decline, new waves of villains pop up.  Nice job breaking it, heroes.

As far as humanity's presence in space, it's not too optimistic for that many space colonies in a century.  Especially with the head start that various supertech gives them.  Asteroid mining is practically inevitable if we can avoid civilization collapsing, there is only so much of various elements economically accessible on Earth's surface

In a change of pace, Minnesota and Wisconsin are both pretty good teams heading into rivalry week, playing for Big Ten West champs.  And the odds are looking pretty even on this game, so it will be interesting to see how it turns out.  Especially since the rivalry is currently tied up (60-60-8).

Of course, the winner gets to lose to Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship game.  Let's not kid ourselves on sure things.

That's actually part of my head-canon as to why all the super-tech in superhero universes hasn't caused more changes.  Most of the economic benefits that have occurred from a higher tech level have been offset by increased insurance and security costs.  And the money siphoned off to pay for supervillains and their organizations.

Which isn't quite how economics works, but it's close enough to be plausible.

I should be running a Champions game for my local group in the near future.  And I was hoping for a little advice on the villain selection.

While still nailing down specifics with the group, the general setting will be Saturday morning 80s cartoons, by way of the Champions Universe (since it lets me use all those Hero books I own).  OTOH, that is a lot of books to comb through.  So I wanted to pick the minds of the veterans around here as to which of the Champions villains are among the most classic/iconic, and/or suitable to that sort of cartoon aethsetic.

You know, beyond VIPER and Foxbat.

In more detail, the group is a Hair Metal band who also happens to be superheroes (Super-globetrotters meets Josie and the Pussycats, I guess).  In particular, inspired by an old post on these forums.  If anyone does recognize the source, it would be nice to check with the author that they don't mind me swiping their ideas.

My usual idea is to measure the characters against a standard straw man and see how they stack up.  In your case I think I would construct a straw man SPD 5, CV7, 10DC attack defences 20 and CON of 20.
Aquanet: Makes 5 attacks with 84% chance of success (both levels in offence) doing 15 STUN and 0 BODY.  That comes to an average of 63 STUN per round with little chance of stunning.  [could use skill levels for damage - 58 STUN per round still with little chance of stunning]. Bondage: Makes 4 attacks with 62% chance of success doing 15 STUN and 0 BODY.  That comes to an average of 38 STUN per round with little chance of stunning.  [could use NND to get 52 STUN and a reliable chance of stunning] Chronic: Makes 6 attacks with 62% chance of hitting doing 12 STUN and 0 BODY.  That comes to 43 STUN per round with little to no chance of stunning.  Delicious Rick: Makes 4 attacks per round with 62% chance of success (2 levels in offence) doing 22 STUN and 0 BODY.  That comes to an average of 55 STUN per round with reliable chance of stunning an opponent when he hits. [bumps damage to 65 per round by pushing all levels in offence) Spandex: 9-10 DC, 5 SPD, 7/7 CV Makes 5 attacks per round with 62% chance of success doing 15 STUN and 0 BODY.  That comes to an average of 46 STUN per round with little chance of stunning. I am not able to do much speculation about how much damage they would be taking with these stances, nor on how much END they would be spending.  I think I would rather be playing Rick or Bondage with these numbers but there should be other factors coming into this.

Try Classic Enimies for 4ed. The full at that time version of Terror Incorporated and The Ultimates are there.

As for the current 6ed version, official Ultimates in Champions Villain Volume 2: Teams, while the new, unofficial Terror Incorporated, well someone already put a link to the store with the product already, right?

Hmmm... on a side note (pun not really intended), going through the three main villain books for 6th ED, there are actually a few villains with PS: Singing.

    From Champions Villains Volume 1:
    Avant Guard
    Warcry

    From Champions Villains Volume 3:
    Howler
    Riptide

If you put the four of them together, they make for an interesting team. You could maybe add Lady Blue to them as their manager, since she has PS: Public Relations.

Well, if Doctor Destroyer is too high-powered for the group, why not go with the bargain basement knockoff clone of him known as Professor Muerte? He and the rest of Terror, Incorporated would make great 80s villains.

Bulldozer makes for another very 80s-esque villain.

If you're interested in Deathstroke, in addition to the 2nd edition module, they were updated in the 4th edition Champions Universe book.  Two of them (Requiem and Frost, IIRC) also appear in the 5th Ed Stronghold book, and again in the 6th edition Champions Villains Volume 2 - Villain Teams book.  (I wasn't happy with the killing of Death Commando, Shockwave, Stinger, and Scatterbrain, so I decided that didn't happen in my game world.)  I don't recall the 2E versions being very detailed and never actually ran a game in 2E; I used the 4E versions or updated them for use in later Champions editions.

Binder, Slick, and Blackstar are largely unchanged from their earlier incarnations. Cyclone, Thunderbolt, Radium, and Orion were never Ultimates. Instead, they had Charger (similar in some ways to Thunderbolt), and Plasmoid, a powerful alien artificial life-form made up of energy fields. Plasmoid's programming had been scrambled in its journey across space, leaving it largely purposeless and random; but for some reason it was willing to follow Binder's orders (most of the time).

Enemies Assemble (a later published collection of supervillain teams) updated and modified the Ultimates. Due to an accident involving Plasmoid, Binder's intellect was vastly expanded. He devised a full powered-armor suit employing force-field weapons, and took to calling himself the Ultimate Mastermind. Meanwhile Charger's health had deteriorated, requiring an extensive life-support suit, but his power increased as a result, leading to a name change to Supercharger.

That's a disturbingly common trend, I've found - the blatantly fantastical gets a free pass, while thing that are plausible, but unlikely get heavy scrutiny.  Some of it may be that the power fantasy is the central tenant of the work and can't be compromised, while the Secret ID is ancillary and thus open to interpretation.  But I suspect that it's more about 'realism', and I mean that in that the most condescending, snooty way possible.  People who want to prove how clever and deep they are, and focus on the things that seem adjacent to their reality.  Possibly the same people who like to talk about 'underwear on the outside of tights' as such a stupid and juvenile costume trope.  (which is a different topic, and start a new thread if you really need to talk about it)

Having said that, there are legitimate conversations to have about secret identity, and how useful/effective it actually is.  But someone arguing how unrealistic and dumb they are seems unlikely to be reaching for that level.

Um, Work-Energy Theorem?  It's been... a while since I had a physics class, so I did a quick Wikipedia visit to make sure I had my formulas correct.  And while I was all set to work out the acceleration, I then noticed the page mentioning that work is also equal to delta-Kinetic energy.  Seemed like a much more straightforward and accurate approach.

Heh.  I once had a supervillainess make friends with Grond, gave him a My Little Pony as a gift -- and then later stole it and convinced him that one of the PC heroes took it.

You can imagine the hero's confusion when Grond came charging at him, shouting, "GROND WANT PINKIE PIE!!!"

You can have it for a song from the Hero store:

See, when you titled the thread, "Classic/Eighties Champions Villains," we all assumed you were asking for suggestions from that era, not this millennium.

However, BoloOfEarth's suggestion of Road Kill does raise the possibility of conflict with other singer-supers. Sapphire of the Champions is an obvious choice; but the Teen Dream (Teen Champions) could involve your characters in the schemes of Teleios. Or maybe a gig at the trendy club, the Minefield (Vibora Bay) could draw them into the demonic doings there.
