For looks, she is essentially perfect for MJW.

With Hero, you only ever need the main book. Everything else is superfluous. I think the 6th edition being two volumes was a mistake. But hey, whatever you need to do to sell more books.

Somehow, I knew this movie was going to be a trainwreck. But for some reason, I still kinda want to see it. That Grace Randolph review was scathing, and keep in mind, she LIKED Batman v Superman....

    Ouch.

Almost done. In watching this, I realize that I miss this genre of film. Man the 80s were a great time for low budget weird horror films with a lot of heart and imagination. Stuff like Scanners and Firestarter. I want more stuff like this.

Which is why I'm side-eyeing Marvel so hard for putting her in the "unreasonable" role for Civil War 2: Electric Boogaloo.

    Yeah no.
Drastically changing the characters just to please the PC crowd is the wrong move. Marvel has been so successful thus far because they have been pretty faithful to the core concepts and iconic images of their characters. That is a formula they should stick to.

I think her being the daughter of Zues makes more sense in the mythological context and for how powerful she is and how favored amongst the gods. She has held the position od several gods (Justice and now War) and it doesnt make sense to me that a simulacrum would be given such lofty positions in the Olympian hierarchy.

I liked it. Well, some of it. The Krypton sequence was pure brilliance and this is the first time Kryptonian level action has been done right on the big screen (no Offense to Donner and Superman 2, but they just didnt have the SFX to do it properly back then. Snyders vision of the action was perfection. Now if only they could get the actual story and characters right...)

I dont know what directors are expecting. Its pretty obvious that they are playing in a shared universe that must play well with all the other properties and crossovers being directed by others in the franchise. You simply cannot do what you want with these characters and the same is going to apply to the DC characters if they do things right.

So no, directors of Marvel movies arent going to have creative control of the picture they are directing. What they will have is a giant paycheck and worldwide acclaim that they can use to get into any other project they want in the future. If they want only to do ART, they need to stay far away from the corporate film machine.

It really hasnt. Everyone has gotten way over sensitive. Thats not the fault of technology.

When we have serious discussion on whether the new droid BB-8 is male or female, thats how I know PC sensitivity has officially jumped the shark.

I have known a lot of guys growing up who were ashamed or embarrassed by their geekiness precisely because of the stigma against it. Thus, those who did not feel said shame or embarrassment decided to embrace the terminology to remove its power to do those things.

I remember one day when I was in the navy and I was hanging out with a gamer buddy of mine and we were disscussing our last roleplaying session. We were in public at the time. We had a guy walk up to us and ask us about roleplaying. He was also from the base, so we invited him to our next roleplaying session. We became pretty good friends and one day he confessed to me that he was utterly shocked that he heard us talking about roleplaying in public, around other non-roleplayers. He said he had NEVER seen anyone do that before and he thought all geeks hid their hobbies from others.

Basically, claiming the word geek removes the stigma from it. Others can use it negatively, but if you see the word in a positive light, it shouldnt have a negative effect on ones psyche.

Today, we dont have this issue, which is great. Thats the best and most important aspect of "geek culture" going mainstream. Its just us grognards who were the ones who went through the abuse, stood strong in the face of it and took the lable for ourselves and through it forged strong bonds with our friends with that lable as our common ground who take issue with geek culture going mainstream. Somehow it doesnt feel as special as it once did. Which is ridiculous, I know, yet the feeling persists.

It's cool that she would make that mistake, since it means her association with Carol Danvers goes deeper than her agent reading Marvel Studios press releases.

I like Jessica Alba, but she was the wrong actress for the role. It wasnt believable to me that she and Evans were biologic bro and sis. And she just didnt look right the way they tried to whitewash her. Despite her European heritage, her hispanic roots show through very strongly.

This isolation of the various fandoms though has only really been a thing since the turn of the millennium though. Its a relatively new paradigm. One that many old school geeks are still getting used to.

And within geekery, there has always been specialization and area of expertise, but i would say that through their association with other geeks, most geeks were at least periphially aware of most of the other fandoms. That is not so much of a thing anymore.

For example, I am a Star Wars geeks. I am not big into Star Trek. I have seen some of the series and most of the movies, but Star Trek is not really my thing. However, through my associations with other geeks who are Trekkies, I could probably answer Trek trivia pretty well. I would wager that most of the older geek generation is similar in their knowledge of general geekery.

Not so much with the new generations.

Maybe on second thought, its less a case of "real vs fake", but simply a geeky version of "those consarned whippersnappers"

    I disagree.

I actually enjoy it when superhero comics are somewhat rooted in the real world to a degree. I want to see the effects of real-world politics on superhero activity and how the presence of superheroes would have an effect on government policy. It makes sense to me.

I always found the Mutant Registration Act to be the most realistic reaction a government would have to the presence of superheroes, and always wondered why they didn't extend that to every powered human in the Marvel Universe. Then they did it, or at least, tried to do it, in Civil War. About damned time.

I honestly think a lot of people's problem with Civil War stems not from the dissection of beloved (but tired) superhero tropes, but because fans favorite heroes were battling against one another, instead of the established villains. They didn't know who to root for. Depending on their political bent, they may disagree with the stance of their favorite super. Someone who is a staunch lover of freedom and who would agree with Captain America but Iron man happens to be their favorite hero...oops. Now we have fan-based angst.

To me, that BRILLIANT. To some, it's probably really annoying. I get that. I just don't agree that it sucked.

This video takes the Feminist Frequency video "tropes against women" and showcases the varied examples of how the exact same "tropes vs women" she discusses are used against men. Also it debunks a few myths about how certain things do not happen in reverse by showing the reverse cases.
