  1. The Dark Side of the Moon (Atmos mix, from the 50th anniversary Blu-ray), by Pink Floyd.

I balked at the price of the Deluxe 50th Anniversary box set when it came out earlier this year, as it would have been a very expensive purchase just to get the new Dolby Atmos mix. The album was recently released as a single Blu-ray audio disc, $25 at Amazon, which arrived tonight. And while the Atmos mix is very good, I don't really think that it's my favorite mix*. The positional audio is well-done, but some of the emotional impact feels blunted, lost in the format, perhaps.

*The Alan Parsons quad mix and the standard stereo mix from the 2011 Immersion Box Set get the most plays.

  2. "Rainmaker" from the Kansas album, In The Spirit of Things, released 35 years ago on October 25, 1988. My friends and I were shopping for new release CDs at the Wherehouse Records across the street from the university, and I picked up this disc. It quickly became a favorite of mine.

Meanwhile, the folks at MCA Records/Universal Music Group were trying to make the company look good for a possible sale. Their management decided that acts like Tiffany were the future, and that older acts wouldn't be worth promoting. They cut a bunch of acts, including Kansas. And that's why, about 4 weeks later, the album was relegated to the bargain bin.

Incorrect. Newtonian determinism suggests that if you knew the current state of the universe precisely enough, you could use the laws of motion to predict everything that was ever going to happen for the remainder of the history of the universe. This makes the idea of free will dicey at best. With the advent of quantum mechanics, specifically the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, determinism is shown to be false, opening up the way for the existence of free will.

Off to listen to Rush, now.

Dick Butkus who played for the Chicago Bears has died at the age of 80. I recall seeing him on the TV series Blue Thunder.

I heard one story about him. After a game the opposition players were travelling home when their bus was rear-ended. A player quipped 'Someone tell Butkus the game is over'

I attended elementary school in Central Florida with his kids back in the 70s/early 80s, and he was an active member of our church parish. I remember seeing him frequently at church, and at events, and he was always approachable and friendly.

RIP to a family man, and an NFL great

Rule 26—Temporary Step Aside of a Member of Leadership who is Indicted

    (a) A member of the Republican Leadership shall step aside if indicted for a felony for which a sentence of two or more years imprisonment may be imposed.

    (b) If a member of the Republican Elected Leadership is indicted, the Republican Conference shall meet and elect a Member to temporarily serve in that position.

    (c) If a member of the Republican Leadership resigns pursuant to this rule, and subsequently during that Congress is acquitted or the charges are dismissed or reduced to less than a felony as described in paragraph (a), such Member shall resume the position from which they resigned, unless the Republican Conference decides otherwise within 10 legislative days.

Trump isn't eligible by the Republican Party's own rules to be Speaker of the House.

Of course, Republicans haven't been known for following rules lately.

  6. Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas: This was recently released on 4K Blu-ray, and the results are gorgeous. This is a movie that greatly benefits from HDR color, with certain elements bright and sharp, and the contrasting darkness and shadows look wonderful, without some of the artifacting on earlier releases. It also has an excellent sound mix, which is in DTS Master Audio 7.1. It's presented in its correct aspect ratio of 1.66:1, so the image is the closest to what I saw in the theater almost 30 years ago. It's well worth the upgrade. (4K UHD Blu-ray)

Vote in the Senate was 88-9;  in the House, 335-91.   One Democrat voted against, and he's the co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus.  There's no funding for Ukraine.  So the count in the House had to be around 120-90, whereas yeah, it's 210 or so Dems.

90 voting No could mean McCarthy's tenure as Speaker is on *very* thin ice.

    If you should go skating
On the thin ice of modern life
Dragging behind you the silent reproach
    Of a million tear-stained eyes
Don't be surprised when a crack in the ice
    Appears under your feet.
You slip out of your depth and out of your mind
With your fear flowing out behind you
As you claw the thin ice.
