  1. Why not mental illusion non threatening/friend/ally?
  2. This popped in my while discussing magick systems on other threads. How would you do RQ spirit combat? The point is to learn spirit magick but you could use it for other things like spirit possession, disease spirits, etc. RQ spirits actually had very few stats. I guess Ego and Endurance would substitute for Power. I need to dig up Avalon Hill rules.
  3. The Mayfair books are quite clear his stats and powers drop to AP 4 (20) vs mystic and Magic effects. Black adam almost killed him precrisis until Billy Batson shows up. No reason Wonder Woman could not do the same. Though I agee that batman having a dex of 9 (45) is way out there.
  4. That is one take on it. Others would make that consecration spell either based on CE or transform of some sort. Though skills you suggested i'd make part of the spell.
  5. What does a character with 180 strength do? The strength chart I have handy stops at a 100.
  6. With that Caveat aside. I present this. I am arguing somewhere else about Powerfist vs Superman. I brought up his magic / mystic weakness and the fact Powerfist has a mystic punch. One that can crack helicarriers. The Mary Sues are not happy. I also found some mayfair stats for Pre-Crisis Superman. http://www.fortressofbaileytude.com/dc-heroes-mayfair-games-earth-two-superman/mayfair-earth-two-superman-03/ His physical stats drop to ap vs mystic based effects. If I recall correctly that 20's in champions. Only question is do Characters like Capt. Marvel and Wonder Woman trigger that. Shining Knights Sword I believe would.
  7. Dragon bones are more for staves, cups, dice, anything that you could make out of ivory.
  8. The phrase you are looking for is whitesmith. Yes it is a real term.
  9. I have a house rule for enchantment. If it is made by your own hand it is a +3 to enchant. If not -3 though the makers roll to make it is complimentary. This explains why even the crudest object in the hand of a hedge wizard can be potent items magically. While explaining the getting an expensive item to enchant trope.
  10. Rune Quest handled it this way. your fast and quick Battle magic was spirit magic (which everyone could get) and Divine. Spirit cost pow(mana) to use just like sorcery but unlike sorcery it was fast to cast. It had simple effects. Usually cast on an object or person. Like Bladesharp went on a weapon. Shield spell went on a shield or parry weapon. Each spell had a # rating like Bladesharp 1 or Bladesharp 2 or Heal 5. Which told you how strong the effect was. But you learned the magic by defeating a spell spirit in spirit combat. The stronger the spell the stronger the spirit. Divine magic had a little more power and bang to it. It was basically a one shot magic charge if your where an initiate and you tithed to learn it. Priests and Rune Lords(paladins) got reusable effects. If a Priest or Lord had an effect as a one shot initiates could not get it. Sorcery was a bit like what you want but it was like the machine language of magic. A sorcerer with talent could whip anything. But it took time.
  11. One of the older Fantasy Hero editions had a rule where you could recharge your endurance battery with a magic roll but it cost Long Term Endurance on a one to one basis. What do y'all think? Too steep or does give the magic system flavour? One could update it and base the LTE cost on how much regular endurance per turn they were pushing into it.
  12. This is why we housed ruled your hit points at first level were full dice. Yeah battle harden guards in the wilderness with 3 hit points.
  13. RQ provided divine spells as charges for initiates in good standing. They would also summon spirits for you to learn spirit magic. a fast and dirty magic system that cost personal power or mana. Usually a Cult could only call related spirits. At a war god temple you could learn bladesharp. At healing goddess you could learn healing spells. Temples also taught related skills. Trading god taught you how to haggle and navigate. War gods would give weapons training.
  14. I remember when FH gave 50 points then went up to 75. 150 would be High fantasy.
  15. It has represented in a inconsistant manner. Originally it just meant he was on "battery power" so speak when on an alien planet of a red star. He had to husband his remaining energy. But it has also been shown stripping of his powers or hurting him outright.
  16. What happened with me? ;P I was just posting an example nothing states that is the only way to go. As for reading I posted some game references. You could pull from real world mythology. feel free to bounce ideas. There is no wrong way. It all depends on the world you are building. I could come with 2 or more completely differing magic systems depending on the world I was trying to create. Here is Gloranthan mythology. It maybe be what finally use but it is a good case study in world building. One of the creators was heavy into comparative religion. http://www.glorantha.com/docs/intro-mythos/
  17. You are dealing with character who has been in use for 78 years across multiple media at different power levels. You have pick one you like and stick with that. It depends on what OP wants.
  18. Ever read greek myth? Their heros screw up all the time Hercules is the classic.
  19. That is the cost structure 4th edition as well as I recall. And yeah that bump in cost startled me.
  20. This may be a difference in editions. But in 5th there is a system under summoning to bind them to tasks with an ego roll.
  21. I would argue all priests and paladin (two sides of the same coin in my book)types are pacters after a fashion. They make deal to serve a power and then get power from that being. Though I haven't seen 5th D&D. Do druids and rangers really need separate spell systems? meh!
  22. I let mages wear metal but they must deal with the nasty encumbrance penalties.
  23. Couple of thoughts: How much area does it take to support your dragons? Are they sluggish with burst of activity like real reptiles? How smart are they? Beastial cunning? or an alien yet sophisticated intelligence? Where did the orcs come from? Example in Glorantha Trolls(orcs) came from the underworld. They were driven out by Sun god when he died and descended into hell. Trolls(orcs) worship the darkness pantheon. They are very brutal and nietzschean in their outlook. If they can defeat you your property or food. If they take something from you it wasn't yours to begin with. Trollkin(goblins) are the product of an ancient curse by chaos. One that that even their mightiest Gods who could work powerful magic could only partially overcome. So some trolls(orcs) are born as trollkin(goblins). just an example.
  24. How many styles of magic? Interesting thing is in hero you build multiple styles that co exist with strengths and weaknesses for each. Old Rune Quest had three. Hero Systems Tulamorn also did this. Another thing about Hero is with enough experience in gaming in general, you use almost any supplement for any game system and convert the gist of it over. Look at Glorantha (Rune Quest). Look at Harn and its magic system. Look at Shadow World from when Hero was working with ICE. got fave book that started you on this path? What was the story? Oh and try to stay away from the D&D clones at first. You work some of that in later if you like but try thinking outside of that box.
