I do love a good bit of overwrought fictional drama 😁

As for Victorian Hero, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. My favourite Hero book since Western Hero, I'd say.

Penny Dreadfuls are definitely presented. Some of the art and lots of the inspiration was from these as a source. I really got into reading them.

But as detective is a subgenre of Victorian Hero and I have the original manuscript, your deduction is correct. If you followed on Patreon and then bought it, I can appreciate that you like the material. Thanks.

If I may interject, I have a lot of experiences with false positives when I but something from a small publisher. For example, pretty much every sports simulation game I buy I need to give special permission to bypass the obvious false positive and save the files (simply because Microsoft thinks too few people have downloaded the file). I'm not surprised this is happening with TTRPG purchases as well.

Looking over Victorian Hero, looks great, nice layout, tons of info. I especially like the mentions of Carnacki, a very forgotten obscure supernatural detective. I enjoyed the short stories I read of his adventures. There were several ghost detective types but Carnacki was the best. If you liked Western Hero, this is a great companion, they both are set roughly the same time period, but from different perspectives.  I'm still going through it but great first impression and lots of great content so far.

Its an easy mistake to make.  But when you write tens of thousands of words, you're going to make errors, and people who've never even tried find it easy to pick on that kind of thing.  You know what professional editors say is an acceptable number of typos in a manuscript? About 3 per 10,000 words.  They say that it is basically impossible to have a perfect manuscript unless its decades old and has been gone over constantly.

A book like Victorian Hero has nearly 200,000 words.  It drives me nuts when people nitpick stuff like that.  Think about how many tens of thousands of errors multiple passes of editing caught, not the couple you spotted.

There are always mistakes. I used to be a newspaper editor, so I'm very familiar with the concept and responsible for more than a few. This particular introduced error just struck me as amusing, that's all.

I think with the files in a zip it makes it difficult to do a preview. We can suggest a page here on herogames.com with a preview and a link in descriptions on sites maybe. Somebody on a Hero fan group on Facebook mentioned this to me about Amazon, or maybe it was DriveThruRPG.

Bought the book. I recommend buying it here rather than DriveThruRPG as they only have the PDF for $15, and not the package deal offered in the Hero store.

There are 21 Heroic characters broke out (by my count) in the following way, in order of point totals but not how they appear in the book:
    1 built on 100 + 40 Complications
    1 built on 175 + 50 Complications
    1 built on 175 + 50 Complications (+20 xps)
    1 built on 225 + 75 Complications
    1 built on 225 + 80 Complications
    12 built on 275 + 100 Complications
    1 built on 275 + 100 Complications (+85 xps)
    1 built on 275 + 100 Complications (+250 xps)
    1 built on 275 + 100 Complications (+280 xps)
    1 built on 275 + 100 Complications (+525 xps)

I'm still going through the builds, but they cover quite a range of types and abilities.

Despite the low point total, the first character, The Muffin Man, is quite a vicious piece of work.

The top-pointed one seems suitable for espionage drama, although more like a Mission Impossible movie villain than a James Bond one.

After all these decades of comics, it's really tough to come up with an original super concept. Nearly everything has been done by someone at some time.

DunDraCon 47 takes place on President's Day weekend (Feb. 16-19, 2024).  It will be located at the Santa Clara Marriott in Santa Clara, CA.  This convention usually has a good selection of Hero Games offerings.  Worth attending if you are in the area.

It was in a Fantasy Hero game in my homebrew setting where the heroes discovered an heir to the throne of the wicked kingdom that had plagued the land and broke in to the prison and rescued the heir. It was big stakes, one of those missions that I could make resource management a focus, as well as stealth. It wasn't the Death Star and I have had supes knock down nukes, but it seemed the biggest stakes at the table for all involved.

What is the most grandiose crime your heroes have seen a supervillain attempt in a campaign?

    Take the mayor hostage?
    Kill the mayor?
    Hold an entire city hostage?
    Destroy an entire city?
Hold the leader of a country hostage?
Kill the leader of a country?
    Conquer a planet?
    Destroy a planet?
    Conquer a universe?
    Destroy a universe?

I didn’t set this up as a poll because it is more of an open question with many possible variant answers.

You know, there is a setting in the official Hero Universe centuries in the future which has a lot of potential. From Terran Empire p. 88: "After losing their homeworld in the war against the Fassai, the [humanoid] Renghadi used rubble from their planet and a nearby asteroid belt to construct Renghadi Station, the largest known space station in the Milky Way. Big enough to house all the Renghadi plus millions of transients, it's become not only a source of pride to the Renghadi, but a major Galactic trading port. Far-traveling Renghadi traders bring goods from all over the Galaxy to the shops and warehouses of Renghadi Station, and their opposite numbers from other species travel there to buy from them in one convenient location. Whatever a person wants, he can find somewhere on Renghadi Station - even if it's not entirely legal..."

For most of the future Hero Universe time line there are no physical "superpowers" as we commonly define them, except for some features inherent in certain alien species. Psionics, however, are not uncommon and sometimes formidable, a la B5; and augmentation through implanted "cyberware" or "bioware" is far from unknown. After the year 3000, when magic returns to the Milky Way, true superpowers become possible again in humans and most alien species.

Agreed. I enjoy adventures and even if I don’t use them wholecloth I can usually reskin them to save myself time on game prep. I wonder how many Hero fans would be interested in more adventures and for what genres?

Victorian Hero was a lot of delving into some dark things for me, so I personally kicked around some Mad Max/Chassis and Crossbow kind of silliness, with auto duel leagues in the cities, heavy on vehicles. Also Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers/Star Wars style fun. Also a street level martial arts type with some Adolescent Evolved Samurai Salamander with a sort of Dark Champions the Animated Series kind of tone.
