  1. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads Thanks, now I undestand why... Wouldn't it be possible with another, more stable, element or isotop, like plutonium 239? Because the way I see it, if the subcritical pellets don't decay to fast, it might be possible to build such a device right now, the damper box being only a simple lead shell with a hollow gap between the to pellets, as lead will deform itself after hitting an armored surface... Also, I heard about somethinh, once, but never could confirme it by credible lecture. I heard the russian government had developped a hand portable "nuclear suitcase". It would have a low yield, but would be perfect for undercover ops. Does that thing exist?
  2. Re: Susceptibility to Persuasion Well, both are intelligent positions. I think it probably depend more of your group and the types of interactions you have with other players. My option works pretty well in my group, but might not be working at all for others.
  3. Re: Renaissance Fantasy Well, I didn't read it, but Iron Kingdoms seemed to be in this time setting. Another option would be D&D world Ravenloft. Some lands were set off in a renaissance time scale.
  4. Re: Susceptibility to Persuasion I don't agree. I don't think accepting social skill roles on PCs reduces roleplay opportunities. As a GM, I just don't allow a roll to be made before proper roleplay as taken place. For exemple. you cannot just say "I convince him". What were the arguments? Rhe more the player is creative and convincing in is roleplay, the more I give boni on the dire roll. Simple, effective, fair.
  5. Re: Bibliography Thanks for the tip. So, as I was saying, even though the canon takes the movie as the official ending, it's exactly the same content; it's just less intense and good... In Japan, the serie provoked quite a scandale when it ended. Anno didn't respect the scenario he officialy proposed the producers. The only reason he had no problems with this is that the serie caught more and more watchers with each episode being diffused. Moreover, the last two episodes were late and diffused later than the original schedule. Worst, people didn't like the end,and (as it is usual in Japan), the fans complained a lot to the producer to obtain another ending, wich resulted in the movies. The movies got the public angry again, but nothing came out again... What I mean the movies have the same content as the serie is So yes, it is weird, but it has a prupose in being so;). Well, anyway, that's what I think. Also, I had a lot of troubles translating this reflexion I had a couple of years ago in french, so I hope it's quite clear anyway... Have fun!
  6. Re: Bibliography Are you tlaking about the end in the movies or in the series? I didn't liked the movies; they just go to the same point, but less effectively. For me, it stops with the serie. Ha... I have a lot more to say, but I don't know how to cover it up like you did with this spoiler button (wich, by the way, I find is a great invension for human kind. How many time did I get punches ruined out??? HOW MANY??? HAARRRGGGG!!!!!) Herr... Well, I'll be happy to discuss it when I learn how not to scrap people's pleasure. Have fun!
  7. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads True, in fact, we already do this to caracterise stars that are moving away from us. Moreover, you still would have to "vent" it in some way, thus making the ship "visible" by some mean. It's always a pleasure to discuss here with you, gentlemen. Have fun:rockon:!
  8. Re: Military Campaign So very true. Nothing is more boring than a game where military units become the characters you play during combat, and a full scale mass combat isn't really so if you don't include unit movement, tactics, etc. If you don't want your players to be special forces or anything like this, you could focus your campain over a series of tactical objectives, the one a section alone is able to fullfill, but that are necessary for the outgoing of the more massive battle. You could listen at When Trumpets Fade for this kind of feel.
  9. Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero Moreover, Earth's axial tilt would not be stabilized between 22 and 24 degrees anymore, making an eventual shift to a tilt form 0 to 85 degrees possible... But, about it being silly, well, I think it is assumed to be. It's like Star Wars; it doesn't make any sens, but, who gives... We'd be a happy (or unhappy) bunch if Space 1999 was the only silly setting possible... I'd play in such a game. I like the setting.
  10. Re: Hypothetically and unofficially, what would you like to see in a Mecha Hero book? Gee, I didn't think this would get this far when I first wrote the thread about a mecha handbook... Unfortunatly, as I'm kinda new to the system, I cannot ask for somethin more precise. Be assured that I'll keep a steady eye on what's going on here...

  12. Re: Setting for a "realistic" campaign in space Well, in some way, interstellar travels already "exist". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Orion_%28nuclear_propulsion%29 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Daedalus http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Project_Longshot This just takes decades to accomplish. The way I thought it, this system would have been colonized by humans from Earth a long time ago and no contact would have been maintained with it (because it takes so many years to travel). Then, planets would have been terraformed over the years to make them habitable without special equipment or infrastructure. But anyway, it seems Basil just blew up everything away... By the way, could you explain to me why a gas giant could only be in the habitable zone only if there is something to slow it up? Isn't it the contrary (the faster rotation, the nearer to the star)? And why does it takes dusts and debris to slow it down? Can't it have a slow revolution speed by itself? Anyway, thanks, everybody. Have fun!
  13. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads I didn't read the book, but it doesn't seem very realistic to me. Battles will probably be staged without so much preparation (at least, from one side). A spaceship is a very small object in space and so even a space armada would probably be very hard to detect before it is very near. Then, even at at speed nearing the speed of light, it would take years to send reinforcements to an attacked system. Ha well, but you talked about FTL... Hum... But even then, nothing prevent the attacking army to bombard a planet during the weeks needed for the ennemy to arrive. Battles will probably take place around planets, due to the vastness of space, unless the defender is able to detect the incoming attack when it still is far away and send some preemptive retaliation... Moreover, I don't see how a state could possibly send military forces to some place just to have them surrender after a computer calculation... It just isn't the logic of people in power. At least, the forces would withdraw and concentrate and reorganise somewhere else. Well anyway, as I told, I didn't read the books and I'm talking about my own preferences, wich are based around a solid human and scientific realism. By the way, this by far the longest thread I ever wrote in. I'm still new here, but, I mean, it all began when Corpse wanted to know about the damage dice for tactical versus strategical nukes. Then we talked about US nuclear policy, Vladimir Putin, nukes in space, Battlestar Galactica... Gee...
  14. Re: Help needed! Well, I don't know the series, but a 20d6 RKA is more in the range of a nuclear weapon... Unless it is a tactical nuke shell your tank is firing, I'd suggest to effectively back it up a bit...
  15. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads Humm. It seems you're right on this, Nyrath... But where do we put the limit? If a computer-controlled fighter is a better option than a manned one, well, why don't we automatise all of the armed forces? I mean, a ground robot fighter would also probably be more efficient than human beings. Where is the line? Won't future wars engage any humans at all? It's a pretty dark perspective, having to be subjected to wars we totally not controle... But then again, is it really different than real life...? Lots of questions. And about Beast's suggestion, well, it's choosing to use a laser instead of a nuke to smash your opponents. It's a logical choice, but it goes out of this thread theme...
  16. Re: How to: Maintain shared pool of divine magic Maybe you could just build it as an endurance reserve? It could only be respenished through a ritual sacrifice and would be linked and usable buy the people who participated in the ritual. It would have another special limitation dictating a constant prayer to prevent the endurance from dissipating by itself. Another way could be to cast an aid on the Authority? I'm not sure this is legal or feasible, though... The praying character would be castind an aid, limited in that it can only resplenish an existing aid. Probably complicated, though... Well, I tried my best! I'm still a Hero system roockie, after all!
  17. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads One way to overcome the point defense and manage to hit directly with a missile could be to launch missiles from small fighters who could get close enough to fire some missiles without them all being wiped out before impact. Indeed, even though a fighter is not invulnerable and can be shot down, it sure can evade some attacks aimed at it without necessarly missing the target, as the missile it carries isn't launched yet. One could also argue that fighters, smaller and more manouverable, could get more easily through the target ship's point defenses. So, if my logic stands, the more important part of a battle would be the engagement between the two fighter squadrons, the winning side then being able to strike at the target's main ships with its nukes.
  18. Re: Multiform, Skills, Contacts -- oh the pain Maybe it just can't use the skill, too. I wouldn't buy, let's say, PS: Mechanics for a serpent as a player... And wouldn't permit this as a GM either.
  19. Re: FRPG Ideas from Hero that ain't necessarily so When ridding, it's better off having the same speed than your horse. If the horse has more, it get to wait until you're ready before charging an enemy. If you have more, you're stuck on your horse waiting for him to move another time.
  20. Re: [Killershrike.com] Vancian Spell List Revamp No...!
  21. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads It would be interesting to think more thouroughly about this. Actually, though, with existing or known near future materials, there is probably no way for a space ship to survive a direct hit from a nuke (at least, from what I learned by Nyrath and his links). Anyway, a fusion bomb use the same process than a star, so I don't see how we could realistically build some material that could survive those conditions... True, but it doesn't change the fact that it probably wouldn't have survived an air or a direct burst. In fact, I know for sure that tactical nukes were planned to be used against carriers to sink them in one shot. Moreover, an hypothetical crew in the baker test would have suffered sever damages from fallouts, something like 50% mortality after 48 hours. And survivors could probably not work very well either...
  22. Re: Setting for a "realistic" campaign in space Kristopher's right about the gas giants. Moreover, a larger star doesn't have a larger habitable zone; the zone is just farter away from it. Plus, two large stars would have to be far away one from another if the planetray system is to be stable without any catastrophic tidal waves. Even the stars themselves could act one on the other, the more massive one acreting matter from the other, creating a band of travelling gases inbetween.
  23. Re: Tac-nukes vs. Nuclear Warheads Cool Nyrath! You managed to learn me something about nukes, wich is both cool and difficult! Repped (even though you might not need it...). Thanks.
  24. Re: Setting for a "realistic" campaign in space Probably not if they are, let's say, red dwarves. Red dwarves still have a habitable zone; it's just nearer of the star. I planned to put only human beings in this setting. The reason why I wanted so much habitable planets is that I wanted to reproduce the feeling of the twelve colonies in the Battlestar Galactica pilot. We could say that the planets were originally in the form you describe here, but, with time, have been terraformed to earth-like planets. This is logic as humans will probably try to get their environment more hospitable. This could explain the likeness between the two planetary systems, as Clonus mentioned... Anyway, thanks for the comments. Now I'll be able to think more about it, again...
