  1. I think they already said no way.
  2. Sure, I'd allow it with some additions for the SFX... In addition to LS: Self-Contained, defense to the NND would include rigid neck armor (can't constrict on the neck) or having some other rigid composition (for example: being made of metal or stone like Colossus or the Thing. They still need to breath, but you're not too likely to strangle them unless you are extra super strong). The following stops the continuous: bright light or no light. Because such things are needed for shadows. The character still needs to maintain the power, since it's not uncontrolled...so you can also get the attack to stop by just forcing him to do something else, stunning him, or beating him into the ground (or otherwise interfering with his ability to maintain the power). So part of it depends on how tough the guy is, too. If he's a real pushover, then it's even less of a problem. Choke holds, normally, default at 2d6 NND... but they can get higher (as some martial artists can testify). Do you have an Active Point/DC limit? Such a power is 105 points (or the equivalent of 21 DCs as many people view it... )
  3. Remember that cars were a LOT heavier back then, too (see above notes that we don't know what "strength of ten men" really means. Ten average men? Ten adventurin' men?). I'm happy with a 28, though (even if not "superhuman"). Also, remember that the guns being carried around back then weren't 9mm... he shouldn't be getting knocked out by a few shots from a .45 I'd give him another SPD pip. I mean, a street brawlin' thug probably has a three above a schoolteacher's 2. Of course, BB's powers fluctuated a lot during his career. Overall, I like this sheet
  4. Do you have a point other than dishing on people who happen to play at different power levels? I'm sure there's a thread around here about supers devoted to stopping muggings in the park and having a tough time of it. Maybe you'll like that better. Nope. I think he's pretty lame. All that power, all those agents, all that gear... and he still doesn't win. Why did he hide? How is he so lame that half the heroes in the world manage to foil his every plot (because, after all, he can battle teams and teams of heroes and slaughter them, right)? He's kind of boring, in my opinion. I can find no reason for such a bland character to get such status (as laid out by the power level). I also take a firm dislike of writing characters up as "the best." Dr.D is the most powerful threat, Menton is the most powerful human mentalist, etc. They're not among the best, they are the best. Too much spoonfed stuff. Just a nit I have to pick with the writing. We killed him in his first appearance in our game (way, way back). He kind of came back when Classic Enemies was released, but was never really much of a problem. Now he's just dead of old age. I was considering dusting him off for a side campaign I was thinking about running, but he'd need to be toned down. You can't provide much characterization for him if you have to keep him hidden away (because he can slaughter standard level heroes). He needs to be more Doom and less Darkseid.
  5. That is so expensive... detect heat, detect radiation, detect explosive compounds, detect poisons, detect water... you'll be here all year just compiling such a list.
  6. To be honest, I often buy stretching to simulate TK for ability that have that direct line type style (like grabbing with swinglines and such). One of the neat things about TK is you can't block it and you can't really missile deflect it by the book. You can also lift heavy stuff without it breaking apart (if your GM enforces those kinds of physics).
  7. Well, assuming the suit even weighed 50lbs... which is quite a bit for skintight armor, his extra strength means that little bit of sinking isn't going to slow him down, imo. The Phantom's martial arts are probably quite similar to Blue Beetle's. He might be better versed in the sweet science, but there is a bit of boxing training going on with a lot of cops back in those days (and I assume BB was pretty skilled to give up his pistol for the fisticuffs). Although to base it on the illustrations, I'd call what BB does more of pugilism than boxing and wrestling (although he does toss guys around quite a bit). His enhanced stats might balance it out on neutral ground. To be honest, I'd still give a SPD edge to Phantom just for the jungle mystique as the Beetle's "enhanced speed" I would assume to mean movement. I don't know of any references to BB's healing factor really kicking in a whole lot during a fight... but he bounces back fast. I could be wrong there. I'm still giving it to the Phantom It's just not going to be a punk down.
  8. I've yet to look at the sheet. Because it's zipped... and I'm lazy.
  9. Anyone remember... The Heckler. I think he just teased you until you gave up.
  10. You just need to buy the weapon elements for the martial arts style and you can use the maneuvers with the weapons.
  11. You can't miss your own hex. It's an automatic hit. Flight doesn't require a to-hit roll to end up in a hex (like leaping) so it's impossible to miss with that attack. Unfortunately all he gets is the explosion part, not the velocity or the STR... so it doesn't matter, anyway. In our game Dr. D was long dead... we killed him when he tried that hypno ray thing back when he was a wuss. Then it turned out not to be him... but he's dead, anyway of old age. I still don't understand the "oh no, I have to go underground and hide" bit in CKC. My old character, Omega Man, could tackle the CKC version, I think. I'd have to view the sheet again. For the current group, there's not much need for a DD-like character. We don't allow the multiple attacks bit. Even still, I believe it's against the spirit of things, if not the letter, to just fire off multiple energy blasts like that. Or maybe that was a discussion on multiple attacks with martial arts needing different bases. I don't recall. Kinda moot for me, anyway.
  12. Well, they were. The big two at the time were X-Men and the New Teen Titans... and all the Hero crew were big fans (in fact, Mark Williams did quite a series of poster sized color artwork of X-Men & Titans battling their biggest villains). Very many of the characters created by these guys were based on those two books in one way or another.
  13. Actually, if you set your tools right, you don't get that little white space on a fill. I don't fill, though, I multiply paint. When the grayscale isn't stinky, Storn's given very good advice there... (I'm hoping I have a poor printing and the art isn't just stinky. Utility in my CKC is a silhouette....that image is useless). But yeah, it can be done. You just have to put out a little more effort and are restrained to the original artist's light source and shading styles which for many of us isn't a bad thing
  14. Genocide is "Aegis" (and certainly doesn't have a chess theme). Aegis had some renegades inititiate "Project Genocide" The Zodiac is actually more of an illuminati group. Only a couple of them actually fight in brawls (for example, Ares is an international arms dealer) but use their powers, if any, in real subtle ways to maintain power and wealth. Demon is a front organization for the Council of the Chosen (which has also infiltrated most other groups - Viper, UNTIL, Primus, etc). Demon is still tech based and obsessed with magic, but they are more like the lame-o satanist cults you laugh at in that respect. They are backed in this fashion to help keep everyone believe the whole "evil magic satanist" type underworld is a joke while the CoC is the real deal, well hidden from prying eyes. Primus is pretty much a pencil pushing dept. The military does the real work (with the fancy weapons and soldier enhancing therapies).
  15. Rage, STR doubles every 5 points. So the Blue Beetle has a STR of 28ish (assuming it's "ten fit men" and not "ten athletic men" or "ten strong men") . However, this isn't even "superhuman" in Champions terms (which doesn't start until 31). So you can feasibly add up to 20 STR to that total since the ten men he's supposedly as strong as don't have STR scores listed for us to start doing our multiplying. Nor does BB weigh tons or anything that would prevent him from moving normally in an environ like the jungle. I don't think it would be unreasonable to give BB a "pugilism" kind of martial art and a couple levels. Nor do I think a SPD of 4 would be out of line, maybe even a five if an experienced version. In Champions terms, a SPD 4 is no longer "as fast as people get." Remember, he's got that law enforcement background... he's not just a pencil pusher or lab monkey... and he runs around beating up mobs of thugs with his fists. The Blue Beetle, neither, was a member of the fab four. lol But if he was, he could have used mobs of screaming teenage girl fans... While investigating a dope ring, Dan Garrett wounded by a gangster's machine gun, and laid near-death in the hospital. He received a visit from Dr. Franz, who had a plan to save Dan's life. Dr. Franz administered a strange treatment. Dan was given the secret experimental vitamin 2X, a super drug that endows its recipient with super strength and healing abilities, increased speed, heightened senses, and enhanced intellectual capacity. Under the drug's influence, Dan Garrett rapidly recovered from his injuries, and returned to the street the next day. also There was a brief period in the late nineteen-forties when Blue Beetle would often gain extraordinary powers at the whim of the writers. One story might show the character flying, then the next may show him growing to giant proportions, or shrinking to miniature size. and to keep Devil busy...(probably by eating) Sparkington J. Northrup became Blue Beetle's boy sidekick in August of 1942. He wore a simplified version of Beetle's costume and called himself Sparky. While thousands of children were being evacuated from England to the United States to protect them from threats from Europe, Sparky would make the opposite journey. He faced the front lines of the war alongside Dan Garrett who was then working as a special intelligence operative. I still give it to the Phantom in the jungle though. It's damn hard to steal his thunder.
  16. Well, you'll to clarify. Permanently more powerful? In that case, it's XP. Work hard to avoid being KOed until you have the points. Temporarily is much easier. You can use partially limited powers, the higher end only activating after recovering from being KOed (maybe on, like, a per fight basis). You could stack this. After waking up once +10 points, twice +20 points, etc. You can use AID with triggers set to recovering. You could feasibly buy up the return time so it seems nigh-permanent...but you'll have to keep buying more points of AID for the growth proccess to continue otherwise you will max out pretty swift.
  17. They fighting in the jungle? Having anyone fight the Phantom in the jungle is like putting Jimmy Olsen against Aquaman on the ocean floor...
  18. Oh, I figured it wasn't a polished piece but you were asking for comments. Rather than just say "pretty good" - I apologized for not commenting and I figured I'd point out what I liked and didn't like. You have said in the past you prefer constructive comments to help yourself improve. You have requested in the past that people just not say "that sucks" or "cool" but to comment on what sucks or is cool and why the person thinks so. As stated "hopefully constructive" and pointed out the changes *I* would have preferred (sharper color, a little more detail in a couple places to match the rest, and I stated my bias about the watercolor look, which I know you like...but I don't. So as a viewer...I don't care for it which influences my opinion). I like this piece more than some of your pro jobs, actually. I like the pencil-ly look to this one.
  19. Sorry, Storn. The good: I like the pants. Usually, I find your cloth folds a little chunky, but I liked these. I also like the pose and the work/design of the face is excellent. You give a very good sense of motion in this piece. The fire spitball effect is well done. I think the color could have been a little more intense/less pastel looking but I think I only feel this way because of the white background. The bad (hopefully constructive): I felt his right hand lacked detail especially in the palm. The other hand could use a little something on the fingers/talons. Compared to the rest of the piece (with shading and hash work), it looks like the line work was painted over or something. The color seemed a little bland to me. I admit to not being a big fan of the watercolor look, so I'm biased. I would have liked to see more highlights & shading on the cables. They are pretty plain. Overall it looks to me the color is a little washed out looking (again, I'm biased). Overall: Nice job. I was looking through some older Hero books recently and it's really impressive just how much you've improved over the years. There's a great sense of motion here (no motion lines or blurs needed) and a good sense, with the pose, of a kind of creepy style of movement.
  20. The cricket (grasshopper moreso... is there a difference?) was the basis for the powers of the original Kamen Rider(s) which has turned into a decades spanning live action superhero TV show(s) in Japan. The more modern ones stray from that basic concept, but a guy with grasshopper powers is still a rough cookie. Strength, speed, jumping, armor, etc...
  21. Well, he's more of a general jerk-o, really, who defied the gods and such until he obtained his own godhood. Edited his name from the book of life so death couldn't come get him, stole a pillar from heavenly temple (that's the staff, which has limitless length), etc. But the big story for him was the Journey West (famous story), in which he was forced to be a good guy a help people, essentially, by, iirc, a circlet/crown that caused him pain if acted like his usual jerko, selfish self. So he could be like an ex-criminal trying to make up for his bad deeds. I don't think I'd really use the word "curious" to sum up the kind of person he was...but *shrug*
  22. You must be the Monkey King! Don't call him Goku, though. Call him Son Wu Kong (that's one of his chinese names). Now he's a kung fu fighting, staff swinging, butt kicker. Pure martial artists are often tougher than they appear. Sure, they don't have any fancy dim mak powers or anything, but all those points are going into sheer MA madness.
  23. It also depends on what would constitute breaking the rules. For example, if any gal with seduction can get the character to think lusty thoughts or something and that's enough to set off the god's anger at breaking the rules... then it could be more frequent. If lying is enough, too, then the guy has to be extremely careful what he says (especially if maintaining a secret id). So there are more factors to consider
  24. I seem to recall al ong time ago something called "Telekinesis: Animate Object" It might have been from a magazine article. Maybe I'll poke around for more info when I get home (finally back at work... booooo). I don't remember the exact mechanics of it but it was a pretty cool way to animate statues or exhibit control over plants or to simulate a "remote control" for vehicles and such.
