  1. Guys, I need two things from the brains of herodom. 1) I need suggestions for a dudgeon crawl. 2) I realized that Dragonia is going to be a finite flat land. What's on the bottom part? CES
  2. Re: What Fantasy/Sci-Fi book have you just finished? Please rate it... The Spider: City of Doom by Norvell Page. Pulp hero the Spider takes on the City Destroyer who is wrecking the city by using a new acid on the steel inside skyscrapers and on the Brooklyn Bridge, The Faceless One who is running an arson extortion scam, and The Council of Evil, gangsters marked by the Spider who have joined together to get revenge. The only thing wrong with the book in my opinion are the little endpieces with Norvel Paige as a detective. They're okay but I don't really care about them and wished they were moved to their own book somewhere else. CES
  3. Re: Notes from NSU Day Ten Nathan pawned the rings from the Jade Dragons. He went back to the lab, cleaned it up. He then went back to Chinatown. Spotting a gathering of the Jade Dragons which he knew were still looking for him, he decided to break in and eavesdrop. He learned that the Dragons and Midnight Wolves were thinking about an alliance and finding him was part of the agreement. Unfortunately Nathan encountered the Wolves while they were arriving for the meeting. A running gun battle broke out until the police arrived to bring things to a stop. Nathan did a little research on other superheroes operating in the world, visiting various sites around the city before returning to the lab. He encountered Dr. Moto who took out Nathan's camera and put in his own. The mad scientist pointed the experiment right at SRJ. The speedster broke in, discovering a secret section of the building partitioned off from the rest of the building. He went back to the lab and found a dragon where the equipment had been. He left and returned with stolen equipment to get through the barriers. He found Dr. Moto being questioned by the staff. Breaking the doctor out gets Nathan shot and manacled. The two enemies break out and Dr. Moto left Nathan on his own as the Dragon attacked. Ashlee Summer, Simon Poole, and Jui-Shen met with FBI agent Clawson. He told them about Captain Video and Ed Durga's investigation. They look around the last place Durga was seen until George called. Ash left the others behind as she flew to investigate the dragon ripping up the SRJ building. Jacob Peterson woke up after the facility he had been held in had been attacked by an escaped monster. He decided that he needed to find out what was behind him being a lizard man, and escaping as soon as possible.

  6. Re: Group Designed Anime HERO I don't know anything about Bible Black or Fighting Spirit, but I think Vulcan has covered a lot of the high points. Akira, DBZ, and Ghost in the Shell all have high tech. They represent a lot of archtypes from powerful psychic to to alien champion fighter to cyborg. Helsing allows for monsters of various types. I have heard Naruto described as Harry Potter with ninjas as wizards. That gives you hidden villages practicing secret techniques that can set the modern world on its ear. Are the players picking specific characters to model their PCs on? CES

  8. Re: xialin showdown page 23- Jade slowly drove up to the door, parked, and said, "I hope you are ready for this." Then she slowly got out of the car and started walking to the door. "Guys, please move out of the way. I really don't want any of you getting hurt." The guards stepped out of the way silently. They held their weapons in plain view but no one pointed them at the two's direction. That could change at a moment's notice. Lau, a retainer from Bob Lee's last days in Hong Kong, gestured for them to go to the library. Bob did some of his more legal business from there. Jade nodded her head in thanks and walked into the library. Bob Lee stood behind his desk, his imposing bulk carried lightly in his customary Hawaiian shirt and cargo shorts. He didn't look like a dangerous crime lord. "Daughter, why must you disobey me?" He sounded restrained. "And you bring this mercenary with you to defy me." He shook his head.

  12. Re: Walking With Strangers 3 Oz Mike Michaelson liked walking around the town of Marlowe. It was a new environment for him to learn. He didn't know how long this feeling would last, but it wasn't like he could go back to his chosen profession. Superhumans weren't allowed to compete against normal humans, and his power allowed him to surf water itself. His savings weren't going to last forever. He needed a job, a place to stay, and a new hobby that didn't involve water. After the thing with the Lake Marlowe giant, he had been offered a job as a superhero. They all had been. So far the only one that seemed enthusiastic about that was Super Squirrel. Mike couldn't blame him for that. It meant an end to his wandering life. It also meant the same thing to Oz Mike. He had surfed all over the world, chased every wave he could find, won big prizes and small. Until he had started wanting a break from it all, he had probably clocked more time in the air than an astronaut. Now he was at loose ends. He definitely didn't feel like a hero. Sirens woke him from his reverie. A yellow and white fire truck pushed its way through evening traffic. Someone probably had set a fire in the burned areas still left over from the rampage. If it burned out of control, it could still reach undamaged houses outside the ravaged areas. Mike ran after the truck. Maybe he could help out with his talent. Firefighting seemed a natural for what he could do. He needed some water to speed up the pace. Oz Mike looked around as he ran. Marlowe had some fountains to enhance the park land feel of the small city, but none were near. He couldn't open any of the nearby hydrants he saw. What did that leave? Mike looked around, seeking some inspiration. All he saw were small restaurants, businesses, and places looking for renters. The fire truck left only its warning wail to lead him on. There was no way to catch up now. Mike paused. He stared at place on the corner. He realized it had all the water he needed. He could almost kick himself. Mike ran into a taco stand, pulling on the goggles and scarf he used as a disguise. He pushed into the bathroom, checked the toilet, then turned the sink on full blast. He needed water, and now he had it. Oz Mike went to the door as the water leaped under his feet. Suddenly he floated in the middle of the restaurant. Everyone had a blank face as he hovered in front of them. "Don't let anybody go into the bathroom, please." Mike waved before heading out the door on his stretching line of power. The surfer decided he needed altitude so he could figure out which direction to go. He forced his liquid horse to climb into the air. A few blocks over he could see the flash of emergency lights and the smoke from a burning building. He nodded to himself. Time to see if he really was the hero Enforcer wanted him to be. Oz Mike soared through the air, riding his wave across the sky. People looked up, alerted by water splashing on them as he passed. He dropped down above the street where the fire fighting crew unrolled hoses to go in the burning building. His stream held him next to the fire chief as he looked at the seven story inferno. "Need a hand, Chief?" Mike had seen the craggy faced Olson during the monster attack even if they hadn't really stopped to talk to each other. "We're getting set up." Olson turned grim blue eyes on the newcomer. "What can you do?" "Give me some more water and I can go in and search the place before your guys have to go in." Oz Mike looked around. "I can be pretty fast." "This is Fire One." Olson held his walkie talkie to his lips. "Open a third hydrant." Mike spotted a crewman running to a hydrant out of reach of the trucks and their hoses. The man popped the front off. Water spilled out in the street. "Thanks, Chief." Mike waved a hand as he directed his suddenly weaker stream over to where the hydrant poured its resources away. Someone must have went in and closed the sink taps off. That was okay. He didn't need that source anymore with a closer reserve to draw upon. Mike gathered the water under him, shaping it in a slide reaching up into the top window of the building. He smashed the glass aside with a shoulder as the slope carried him forward. He was glad he had covered his face as the smoke billowed out of the office he was in. He had promised a search without thinking. Now he had to carry it out. Oz Mike plunged into the inferno, letting his slide enter before him. The water soaked the rooms down as he passed. Sprinklers poured down ineffectually, and he added them to his engine to increase his speed. He did the same for any bathrooms he passed. Soon he was a roar, knocking down doors, cascading down steps, extinguishing small blazes with just his passing. Oz Mike smiled. So far everything was going okay, and he hadn't seen anyone who needed him. Maybe the building had been empty when it caught fire. There was no telling until the blaze was put out and the source was found. He just had to make sure that no one waited for rescuers in the smoke. Oz Mike heard coughing when he was halfway down the structure. He looked around, spinning in place on his extending platform. Steam shot up as the loose water flew in droplets around him. A hand appeared from behind a desk, clawing for support. Oz Mike flew over, grabbing the arm attached to the hand. A middle-aged woman coughed weakly in her hand. The surfer slung her over his shoulder. He headed downstairs as fast as possible. He hoped any others trapped inside could hang on until he could come back inside and find them.
  13. Re: Can Characters get to powerful for some Genres/Settings? The Gm will have to ask the weaker members of the party what they want to do. He can't just make them stand up on their own. It's like the old saying about horses and water. CES
  14. Re: Heroes from All Fifty States I had a whole bunch of heroes like these but now I can't find the notebook. Isn't that always the way? The ones that stick out in my mind are the Redbird from NC, The Blue and Gray from VA, the Blue Cresent from SC, Keystone from PENN, Gold and Silver from NM I think, the Golden Bear from CA, The Loon from Minnesota. 15. Re: Ben 10: Alien Force Kais, I don't know anything about translating characters from other media like Bloodstone, but it seems to me that Gwen 10k had a multipower for flight, telekinesis, energy blast, then a power pool for transforms, uncommon spells she did. The power pool probably only needs incantations. Then skills like hang gliding, computer programming, martial arts. A lot depends on what the point cost is but that should be all you need as a base. CES
  16. Re: Can Characters get to powerful for some Genres/Settings? Trebuchet and Chris both seem right. Of course a character can become too powerful but in this case I think the matter of relevance applies. If some characters are standing around, are they standing around because they have no means to investigate or because they can't think of something to do? It sounds like two problems going on. If the characters' powers allow them to get clues better, the gm should use it to his advantage. If some characters are standing around, maybe turning the focus on them will help them move out. CES

    Pulparize It!

Re: Pulparize It! Cop movies are the easiest to pulperize. After all, most pulps built their magazines on the hardboiled detective. Above the Law: Steven Seagal comes home from the Great War to become a detective on the Chicago PD. He becomes embroiled with army officers from his past trying to shut down a congressman filing a report for the government on the rum runners turning the city into a war zone. And when he discovers his enemies are in league with Al Capone, it's time for machine gun justice. CES

  23. Re: The New Circle Rider 1- Waldo Newsome glanced at the driver's side mirror. He didn't like what he saw trailing behind his car. He pushed the gas pedal down, grinning as he started pulling away. No phantom was going to catch him. Waldo had picked the car up outside of a chain grocery store. Two twists with his slim jim, some rewiring underneath the dash, and he had something he could chop. He drove casually through the neighborhood, eyes open for cops. He didn't want to get caught with a hot car. That's when he saw that thing behind him. It rode a horse of fire, long black cape billowing behind it. The ghost, whatever it was, had a bag for its head. Waldo noted the rope hanging from its neck at the end of a long knot. He had seen enough westerns to know what that meant. Waldo hit the gas. His latest ride slipped forward as the tires dug in, then accelerated away from the horseman. It wasn't the brightest move, but being chased by the cops had to be better than dealing with something that wasn't human. Waldo breathed a sigh of relief at the thought he had lost the horseman. Too many guys were winding up burned, in the hospital. He didn't want to be one of those fallen members of his brethren. Suddenly a fiery thing reared up in front of Waldo's stolen car. He twisted his wheel hard to the left. His chevy ran into the brick wall of a store. Waldo's head snapped forward against the steering wheel, turning the world a shade of gray. Hands pulled the door open. Waldo tried to turn his head. He found the going slow and painful. The hooded man leaned in to grab his neck and face. The quick exam showed that the thief was hurt but he would live. A quick search produced a cell phone. An emergency operator demanded answers. Only an address was given. The Rider whistled his horse into existence. He swung a leg over the phantom's back. A quick snap of the reins sent the ghost into a gallop. Before the sirens of the police arrived, he had vanished into the night. The police called an ambulance for Waldo. His story was checked. Of course the stolen car was charged to him since he was driving it when he smashed into the wall. A phantom rider chasing him across town like the headless horseman was discounted due to the huge bump on his head. After all, why would a ghost chase a car thief across town, and then cause him to wreck? Waldo spent a couple of days in the hospital until he was excused to report to court. The judge asked how he pled while his court appointed lawyer held him up to steady him in front of the judge. He thought about pleading not guilty, spin a yarn how he had been placed in the car. The cops had beaten a confession out of him while he was alone and hurt in his sick bed. He thought about it and pled guilty. Waldo figured he would get a five to ten, maybe parole after three if he stayed out of trouble. He could do that standing up. When he got out, he would find a way to go straight. He could look around for a job and stick with it. Waldo winced at the harsh sentence he did receive in the light of his criminal record. He thanked the judge, shook the lawyer's hand, and let the bailiff lead him away. He would be in the jail for a while waiting for his paperwork, then he would go to prison for a while. It wasn't exactly perfect, but he would do the best he could until he was released. He needed to call his mom while he was waiting, let her know. Waldo walked to his cell, and sat down. He looked up at the ceiling. He figured he would have plenty of time to be doing this in the future. Time to think wasn't necessarily the best thing to have in a place like the Pen, but it was time that he did that to find a way to fix the rest of his life. His eyes closed, then snapped open. He imagined he had seen a man with a hood on his head walking the cell block. He went to the barred door. He looked up and down the corridor. A guard stood at one end, reading some paperwork. No one else was in sight. Other inmates went about their businesses without any excitement. Waldo sat back down, putting what he had seen down to his imagination. It wouldn't be the first time he had seen something that wasn't there. He needed to get a handle on that if he wanted to serve his years without going crazy. Prisoners didn't like crazies in their midst.
