  2. Re: My Tank is Fight! by Zack Parsons Where did he come up with the name? Japlish? Germlish? What?
  3. Re: What's a 2,000 year old zombie eat? In every form of the zombie story I have ever encountered, the zombies attempt to eat the living. Whether the entire body, or merely the brains, is the target, zombies eat. If you wish to say zombies do not NEED to eat, fine. But eat they do. Unless you are referring to a variant zombie of your own creation...
  4. Re: Taverns and tavern games Or Hyena Chase, or any of a number of other "chase and/or be chased" games. Quite an interesting product.
  5. Re: Heart Shot I had not heard of that. One place I have heard about the right way to deal with vampires can be found at http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/37/whats-the-best-way-to-kill-a-vampire That, though, is more "how to kill them off permanently" than "how to hurt them in a battle". Indeed, putting a stake through a vampire's lung is likely to do no more than give her pneumonia.
  6. Re: Mid 70's Equipment I saw one in use circa 1977. Perhaps "began replacing" is too strong. "Showed they could replace" might be better. IAE, they are available.
  7. Re: Mid 70's Equipment I'm not sure what you're looking for: only human-portable objects? Only weapons? In any event, here are a few bits and pieces; portable equipment, methods of transportation, new technology, and junk, culled from some printed sources I own. Almost all are brand new in the five years 1970-1974. If you cannot use them directly, they still will give you a sense of the times. CB radios. (This needs to be checked; I'm depending on memory for this one) Muscle cars and bellbottoms. The Concorde SST (SuperSonic Transport) Soft contact lenses Major increase in mag-lev trains BART Oil tankers of 350,000 "ton" capacity and beyond. FedEx. Polaroid's "develop right then and there" color camera The World Trade Center was opened in 1972. The Transamerica building in San Fransisco and the Sears Tower in Chicago are from about the same time. ATMs became popular The UPC came into use. Airbus started to challenge Boeing's dominence, with the A300B The CAT scan was invented The Heimlich manuever was introduced Word processors with CRTs began replacing typewriters BTW: The patent on polyester ran out in 1970. Artificial fibers really took off afterwards. The only countering trend was the major increase in production and use of cotton denim, mostly blue. Note also that satellite phones, and ham radio equipment, though not new, were available.

  9. Re: Heart Shot Wood, silver.... Oh dear, I'm having a flashback to Love At First Bite.
  10. Re: Altered Autofire An interesting idea. We have built some extremely high ROF weapons as AoE, Line. These, BTW, are emplacement weapons. The problem, of course, is dealing with a human-portable weapon, which can be switched between autofire and single shot (and, in some cases, bursts in the 2-4 round range). A Multipower seems like a solution, until the question of tracking rounds fired is considered. Does anyone have suggestion for solving the above problem? Boosted charges doesn't (as far as I can see) address this.
  11. Re: Nazi Flying Saucers For gaming, I have no problem. It's a peculiar "idea seed," but I'm sure could be made into something usable. And different people have different tolerances for "suspension of disbelief." Now, the mixing Tesla's...bizarre...ideas with the...unlikeliness...of Vril and considering it to have any attachment to reality; well, that's way past my limits.
  12. Re: Taverns and tavern games Ahh?!?? Interesting. Thank you for adding to my knowledge. The dragons/pegs game sounds much like an entire class of games, all of the "chase down the path" type. A very medieval type of game, so if it's their own invention, they've invented a very fitting game.
  13. Re: Altered Autofire IMO, it comes to much the same thing in the end. There is no real need to change the cost. Or, if adjustments are made, they should be made at higher levels. Now, if I can get this to format properly; the first column is how many points the to-hit roll is made by, the second column is how many bullets hit under the current system, the third is how many hit under the proposal. Note that those numbers followed by an asterisk are only achieved if the weapon has Auto-Fire of 10, and those followed by a double asterisk can only be achieved with Auto-Fire 20. 00----1----1 01----1----1 02----2----2 03----2----2 04----3----2 05----3----4 06----4----4 07----4----4 08----5----8* 09----5----8* 10----6*---8* 11----6*---16** 12----7*---16** 13----7*---16** As you can see, for a weapon with Auto-Fire 5, the difference is negligible. Indeed, it is only when the to-hit roll is made by 4 or by 5 that there is any difference. Weapons with higher Auto-Fire will see a difference (which is what we wanted), but then only with very good shots. Thank you for bringing up the matter. It gives me an excuse to show the work I've done.

  15. Re: Pulp names and basics Good point. I used to have an enormous list of "thug names," but it (with much else) has been lost. I remember I started with body parts (Eyes, Knee-Cap, etc.), then went to appearance-based names (Slim, Fats, Ears, etc.). One that seemed to have been well liked was "Parked Cars". As in "his face looks like he chased parked cars." Came for a nickname for a dog we had when I was a child. It received the nickname not for its appearance, but for its stupidity and habits.
  16. Re: Taverns and tavern games The "Tavern Games" is interesting. Three of them are, in fact, authentic medieval games. Their rules for Hazard are more like Craps; Hazard is a bit more complex, though not much. "Merrils" is properly called "Merelles," which is, to be accurate, a class of games, of which the best known is Nine Men's Morris, which is what they're describing. "Fox and Geese" is also medieval, and known only by that name. There is a completely different game called "Hnefatafl," which I guess is the source of the name they've given to Fox and Geese. BTW, they made one change; in Fox and Geese, the Fox starts on the middle-most spot, not "on any empty point." The other two are, as far as I know, inventions of their own.

  18. Re: Hero is TK projection of kid in coma This is a forum dedicated to an RPG for playing super heroes, Yes. It is a forum for discussing a game. Not for discussing comic [sic] books. Major works. Not minor works, not second-string characters. Apology, but not patronizing tone, accepted. The Green Lantern I have heard of. That does not mean some individual called "Oa" is thereby familiar. My grounding in the superhero genre is from years of playing HERO. I have played with people none of whom read comic [sic] books. We enjoy the game immensely. We have no interest in comic [sic] books. "Why not read comic books?" you undoubtedly ask. Go to http://www.comicvine.com/characters Read the "biography" of nearly any character. The unfortunate fact is that, across the last couple of decades, that the comic [sic] books have descended to soap opera. I read to be taken out of myself, to delight in tales of those who are larger than life, who do not have the grinding, petty, ceaselessly picayune problems of real life. The comic books started that way, but have utterly failed to keep to such a level. So, I play super-heroic games, but don't bother with the comic [sic] books. I hope that clarifies my background. Yes. Assuming the projection can be absorbed by the psychic, or blocked/removed by doing something to the psychic. If that can't happen, then I would not allow Y to be "a psychic projection of the other character's subconsciou [sic]". Now, a creation or product of said subconscious, that I would allow. And, since I regularly allow PCs to "exceed" their written powers, the difference is not at all "semantic" or "academic". I have re-inserted what you left out, to the detriment of the meaning of what I said. I was replying directly to your suppositional case. See, by leaving out what I was responding to, you got what I was saying exactly backwards. What I said was, if one PC only exists because another PC creates him (knowingly or not), then the creating PC should pay the points for that power. If the "projection" can be eliminated by the "projector" or by doing something to the "projector," or breaking the "link" between them, then the "projection" only exists because of the "projector" and the "projector" should pay for the power. I thought the distinction between projection and product/creation was clear. If not,... Projection: a being or seeming that exists due to the action of "being projected": a temporary, blockable, or removable manifestation. Creation or Product: a made thing, a thing with an existence of its own. While destroyable, it cannot be removed, stopped, "un-manifested," etc., by actions to the builder/creator. If PC Alpha is a projection of PC Bravo, then PC Bravo should pay points to be able to do so. If PC Bravo, out of her mental 'power', created or produced PC Alpha, who is a separate being, not dependent for continued existence on PC Bravo, then PC Bravo needs not pay anything. However, I would not allow then PC Alpha to have any characteristic of a mental projection in any sense of the term; PC Bravo would have no influence on PC Alpha, no more than any other person has (via, e.g., talking, reasoning, threatening, etc.). Indeed, I would not allow Mind Link, as that is too much like "being a projection." Similarly, I would not allow PC Alpha to take Susceptibility/Vulnerability to PC Bravo's mental powers. YMMV.
  19. Re: Pulp names and basics I stand corrected. Though I will point out such names work better for superheroes and supervillains.
