College Football 2022

Good googly moogly...

Stanford up 27-22, time running down.  Out route in between 2 defenders...the receiver snatches it from the DB's *back*...it was underthrown and outside.  That DB, and a trail DB, freak.  The receiver plants his foot, stays up, stays inbounds, and takes off.  56 yard TD with 13 seconds left.  Stanford throws a pick, but let's be fair, that hardly matters.

Wild.  Shades of Broncos-Ravens playoff game some years ago....

Elsewhere:  I suspect we'll have a new #1.  Alabama is not impressive for the 2nd time, OSU is solid.

I tried to watch that game, but when I tuned in they were showing some stupid baseball game instead.

ABC twice...CBS...2 Fox...?  Yeah, sounds about right.

Normally you can add 5 or 6 between ESPN and ESPN2, 1-2 on FS1, at least 1 on CBS SN.  BEFORE talking about premium services like SEC, ACC, or Big 10 networks.

But whether that's actually reached saturation is a good question.  For any of us not rooting for any particular team...quite possibly.  For many?  Doesn't seem to be.

Weber State beat Big Sky rival Eastern Washington 45-21 yesterday to move to 5-0 on the season. Strangely, both teams wore their colors for the game. Weber State had purple helmets, purple jerseys, and purple pants; EWU had red helmets, red jerseys, and red pants.

:ugly:

Ryan McGee writes ESPN's Bottom 10.  He likes to lampoon an underperforming Power 5 team, by putting them at #5.  One can likely guess who got that spot this week.

Of course, the #1 spot can only go to the last perfect team standing.

The first "play-in" game of the year is coming up.  #3 Bama vs. #6 Tennessee.  Both teams can use a validating win, and this one would put them on a good track for the CFP.  If UT can win this one, they can probably lose to Georgia later on.  If Bama wins, they've still got both Mississippi teams in their division.

HEY DEADHEAD!!!!

WHAT THE HECK!!! is going on with your team?  ANTHRACITE uniforms?

I even like the color, but it's gotta be in the right design.

And perhaps the clock struck midnight on Kansas...?

Mostly watching Mich-Penn St.  Michigan's smoking them...mostly.  But 4th and goal 3 times...3 FGs.   A funky, batted pass turned into a pick 6.  A beautiful fake led to a 60+ yard run by the QB to set up a TD.  Michigan's overwhelming on the stat sheet but up only 16-14 at half.

So a ten point win over Kansas is probably the best of the season by Oklahoma. Looking at the rest of the schedule there are winnable games against Iowa State, West Virginia, and Texas Tech left. Oklahoma State is going to be unpleasant, and Baylor isn’t looking great either. So that’s maybe a 7-5 season (currently 4-3).

Could be 6-6, don’t think it can be 8-4. Oklahoma needs the bowl game to continue the rebuild with the extra practice days.

At least we didn’t lose at home to Kansas. That would’ve been rock bottom right there.

Yeah, put that on the TV.  28-10 (!!!!) right now;  Bama player thought he saw the ball hit a teammate on a punt return.  He tried to grab it, and in classic greased-pig fashion, it slipped right through.  Tenn recovers, briskly punches it in.  Saban's going "WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING!!!!"

If this stands up, then Bama *has* to beat Ole Miss;  losing to them would be a 2nd loss, and mean they've got no real shot in their division.  If they win, and win out, they make it to the SEC title game, against Georgia or Tennessee.  They'd have to win that.  That'd be the win that would put them back in the top 4.  Any other path, and I don't see it.  2 losses, and 2 very unimpressive results, does not make a top 4 team.

Particularly since Michigan and Ohio State are making strong cases.  Michigan cleaned up the mistakes and rolled #10 Penn State;  Ohio State's risen to #1 at a point when that's reasonably meaningful.  Georgia and Tennessee are also making strong cases.  Clemson and USC would be the other 2 in the mix right now;  the question may be the perception of their respective conferences.

OK, I'll stop now.  It's only mid-October, harping too long on this is like playing Christmas music before Halloween....

BYU scored 35 points against a team from the SEC today. Sadly, they gave up 52. They were fortunate in that they didn't give up 59, as they stopped the Arkansas quarterback sneak from the one yard line as time was expiring.

(Seriously, though, who tries a quarterback sneak from one yard out with time expiring when they're up 17? Just take a knee and go home, man.)

The good news for the Cougars is that the schedule gets considerably easier at this point. And after that loss to Oregon, it's not like there was any realistic chance of them playing for a New Year's Six game or anything.

And the University of Colorado is no longer the only winless FBS team. It took a goal line stand in overtime, but they beat Cal.

OH MY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bama misses a long FG with 15 seconds left.

Tenn completes 2 long passes, getting down on the ground to stop the clock (first down) with 2 seconds left.

Kicker catches it kinda fat and it's knuckling...but holding...and going...and going...AND GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

52-49 TENNESSEE!!!

DOWN GOES BAMA!!! DOWN GOES BAMA!!!

Another one bites the dust

Another one bites the dust

And another one gone, another one gone,

Another one bites the dust!

USC 42-35.  Utah has a nice drive for a TD.  Coach elects to go for 2...which given the game, is quite sensible, as the offenses have been the superior units.  Play opens up to be a QB draw...to the score to take the lead with 43 seconds left.

USC can't move it enough to get into range.  UTAH!! wins.

4th top 10 team to fall this week, altho 2 of em lost to other top 10 teams.  4 other top 25's fell as well.  Trick or treating starts mid-month this year...

Weber State beat Portland State 42-7 over the weekend to improve to 6-0 for the first time in school history. They're currently ranked #5 in FCS.

The next three weeks will tell how good the team really is. They're in Bozeman on Saturday to take on Montana State, followed by home games against Montana and Sacramento State. All three of these teams are in the FCS Top 10 as well. Win out, and the Wildcats can probably earn a top 4 FCS playoffs bid, including a first round bye.

Go Wildcats!
