death tribble
I am looking for Chemical Compounds that might make good paranormal names or powers. Don't quote the Periodic Table to me I have that. Nor water or salt or acids like suphuric, nitric or hydrochloric. Or Potassium Permanganate. No gems or precious stones either. I have things like Diamond in mind. Nor Steel, bronze, brass etc.
Barton
Re: Chemical Compound names Recommendation to you is to go to a library and check out a CRC (chemistry). The CRC is a huge reference guide on chemistry. It contains many chemical names. Another suggestion is the PDR (physicans desk reference). It has info on drugs including trade names of them. It might have many "cool" names in it, but watch out for copyright infringment
Lord Liaden
Re: Chemical Compound names How "chemical" do you want the names to sound? Can they just be the commonly used monikers for the substances? If that's the case, I'd suggest Nitro Napalm Agent Orange Angel Dust Octane I'll try to come up with others, assuming this fits your bill. death tribble
Re: Chemical Compound names I have Napalm and Agent Orange. But the others are good. Anything normal which I may have missed or where there is a common name for a long chain molecule like Angel Dust. Calcium Carbonate is no good for example but Carbonate is. Sulphate and Sulphide are ok. But there are bound to be others I have missed.
Lightray
Re: Chemical Compound names I am literally surrounded by huge books with lists of chemicals. Rather than the CRC I'd recommend going to a lab supply website, like http://www.sigma-aldrich.com. Plus, maybe focus on what kind of chemicals you'd be interested in: organics like Benzene? bases and acids like Caustic? explosives like TNT? fuels like Acetylene or Hydrazine? drugs like Cortisone? And rather than salts like Sulfates or Sulfides, may I suggest the acids Sulfuric and Sulfurous (or Hydrochloric, Phosphoric)? Much more active. BobGreenwade
Re: Chemical Compound names Names of chemical reagents can be good too: ninhydrin, luminol, phenolphthaline, precipitine, etc.
Lightray
Re: Chemical Compound names ooh, Phenolphthalein is a good one. Picric acid -- it's shock-sensitive. Although I'd guess the paranormal with that power might literally be a one-shot...

Christougher
Re: Chemical Compound names Or go for a variant. I used the name Ion once for a VPP character built on elemental/chemical formulae. EG: H20 -> H2SO4. Irony alert: The character was a jock and hated science class.
