Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

On another related note....

While not using a WORD to transform does anybody remember Dial H for Hero ?

And would you build the character as multiform and just make a stack of alternate forms to randomly choose from?

Multiform, 1000 forms, -1 NCC (Can activate, has no choice of what form, form may only be used once)

Multiform' date=' 1000 forms, -1 NCC (Can activate, has no choice of what form, form may only be used once)[/quote']

Didn't that vary based on which dial you used? I know that Chris & Vickie had no control over their new form and it only lasted an hour but the primary Dial that Robby Reed and Hero Cruz used had no such limits. Heck, Reed even changed into the same character more than once. Then there was Nick, Chris & Vickie's ongoing annoying NPC, who seemed to have the power to pick and design his own multiforms and had been unconsciously designing theirs. 'Course, you could sim that if you want by having the other players come up with suitably annoying/one note forms.

I don't like the new Dial comic though, lacks that element of good-natured goofiness.

In brightest day: The Green Lantern recharge oath

Specifically the Silver Age GL oath. The Golden Age GL went with "And I shall shed my light upon dark evil, for the dark things cannot stand the light ... the light of the Green Lantern."

Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

Thanks for all the great ideas guys,

I wanted to turn this thread to a more general question about what makes OIHID really worth -1/4 limitation bonus. Is it just having to say something, or perform a specific gesture like touching a staff to the ground like Thor, the early years, or having to touch your wrists together like Image Comic's homage to Shazam!/Captain Marvel, MightyMan enough to justify this?

opinions welcome as always.

Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

OIHID is a little ambiguous on definition.

It says in FReD that the character should maintain two distinct identities, but I don't think that is good enough. In my game, I wouldn't let someone take that Lim on their powers if the only thing keeping them from using it was fear of revealing a Secret ID. If the character's powers are available all of the time (like Spiderman's powers, for instance, or Superman) then, no OIHID.

If the character had to use a specific object to do an instant-change, I might allow it. Can the item be taken away, is the action restrainable? Then sure, I would allow it.

OIHID is best used to describe non-focused powers that aren't available 24/7... like if a character was a lycanthrope, or a Dr. Jekyll/ Mr. Hyde type.

My humble opinion. :D

Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

OIHID is worth -1/4 only if it truly is limiting in some way... Tony Stark needs time and a place to put his armor on/his briefcase containing it could be taken away, Donald Blake is screwed if his walking stick gets stolen, Billy Batson's mouth can be taped shut/ his secret ID is blown if he can't get away to change...

If you're Michael Keaton and you just happen to be useless without your rubber batsuit, that's more of a Focus... I usually think of OIHID as a Focus or Incantations limitation that only applies to the secret ID or the change to hero form, not to the hero himself.

I've had the thought this is often worth less than other -1/4 Limitations in terms of how it actually limits the character, since once they have actually transformed to hero ID they have all the points but no limitation anymore. As a GM I would monitor its use very closely.

However, if it is going to cause the PC difficulty, and since there are no "-1/8" limitations to represent it as a lesser value limitation, I'd say it's a legitimate, if perhaps too cost effective, point savings.

Agreed. The GM should keep tabs on the PC using OIHID and note how much 'In Game' time is spent in the Hero ID. If the PC is in that Hero ID 75% or more, then maybe the OIHID isn't justified.

It really depends on the game, of course... if your campaign is mostly combat, then you would expect that all heroes are at combat-readiness and OIHID might be a rarity in your characters.

In my current game, there is a battlesuit character with a power framework built as a focus, and then his additional, lesser powers outside of the framework are OIHID. Out of combat, this character spends quite a bit of time outside of his battlesuit. Ok, it might make a difference the the suit only fits through a normal sized door with much maneuvering. It is large, so he leaves it out side. It's kind of funny, too, because other than his intellect, he's a normal guy outside of the suit. ;)

Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

So are the characters HourMan and UnderDog OIHID or IIF focus users since they both take a pill to get their powers?

There is no way to force them to change back early, the effect just wears off at least in HourMan's case, I don't remember UnderDog changing back before he was ready.

edit OIF to IIF, oops!

I don't see how a pill could be a focus, unless someone can force the PC to cough it up. Or can negate the pill with another drug. Or can scoop it out while Desolid (ala Neo scooping a bullet out of trinity in the 3rd Matrix).

I can see that pill as an Instant-Change bought as focus/charges, but all the other powers that happen afterward as a result of the pill? Hmmm... no. :D But then again, I'm not the GM of that game.

A pill? Really?

A pill? Really?

yeah, it makes you wonder why the makers of viagra didn't try to get a cartoon tie-in for advertising.

of course I've been wondering why there isn't an original star trek communicator style cell phone on the market by somebody. the technology is doable now and it seems like there are enough closet trekkers/trekies to make it a hot seller.

I would just go for the OIHID for either the Hourman or the Focus that is not a focus (Iron Man).

The point here is that there is a point in time where the PC has no powers. Upcoming later this summer is a perfect example of why OIHID is such a pain.

A man and a woman are in a diner. They are discussing serious issues to effect them both. Wham! Out of nowhere a car ruins a perfectly good window as it sails through and at the couple. Luckily the man is a superhero and pulls them both under the car as it hurtles above them.

OIHID makes ambushes into assassinations.

I think I've heard of this movie.

Some kind of limited-run, artsy indie film, isn't it? ;)

OIHID is definitely limiting, but sometimes it seems to me that using Multiform would be a more "honest" approach for a lot of characters, ie. not just a munchkiny points grab...

However, as always, it comes down to the GM. If he's doing his job, any -1/4 power will be a pain in the butt at least 25% of the time...

Re: Looking for NEW words of transformation: (SHAZAM, Thunder! Thunder!...)

Althought Hyper-Man has a twisted sense of humor he does exist in a somewhat serious 4 color champions setting. The short and easy of his origin is that his normal form, Mike Maxwell (nods to Billy Batson, Dexter Douglas, and Wally West to name just a few) is a talented young college bum :smoke: who happens to be extremely lazy with his studies. He can afford to because of the following Talents and skill enhancers that was born with: Lightning Calculator, Eiditic Memory, Cramming, Scholar, Scientist and x10 Speed Reading. These combined with his 18 INT he can pretty much ace any college course he takes with just a little time to put the cramming, speed reading and eiditic memory to good use (and making sure that he doesn't have 2 exams on the same day!)

My idea for the origin of his powers and and ability to transform to get them is borrowing a little from Flash, Johnny Quick and Freakazoid. He ends up taking a high level quantum physics course because he is actually interrested in understandng it as opposed to just memorizing it and making a grade. He actually promises himself early on to avoid using his short term cramming talent. He actually wants to learn the subject permanently! :joint: Unfortunately, his laziness kicks in and he forgets to study like he should since he promised himself to not 'cheat' this time. His other BIG concern is making sure to not put his A+ GPA in jepardy. He ends up having to cram the hard way all night before a big exam without using his special techniques and since he is not used to the long process involved in doing this normally, he really goes overboard on the caffiene. :idjit: This sets off a chemical reaction in his brain chemistry that when combined with his declaraton of astonishment when he realizes that he actually understands the theory and math behind the Higgs Bosons role in giving particles mass it transforms him into the embodiment of his inner hero: Hyper-Man! :doi: I was originally thinking something along the lines of Eureka! or Zipidydooda! to be what he first says which from then on triggers his transformations between forms.

Does anyone have any ideas for a better 1 or 2 word statement that would fit this origin? And should the same word(s) be used for going back to his normal form or does anyone have a better idea there?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds to me what you should have is a quantum physics equation that he recites to activate his powers. That, or a ready supply of Jolt cola. :)

Ah; sorry, got carried away. In order, they are...

"Moon Prism Power MAKE UP!"

"Souchaku!"

"Henshin!"

"Cosmos!"

"Emergency! DekaRanger!"

They are all phrases that *must* be used (and almost all also require gestures, as well) to transform in the most recent Japanese tokusatsu (live action spfx) shows: Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, Gransazers, Masked Rider Blade, Ultraman Cosmos, and Special Police DekaRanger.

Since Hyper-Man is partially paying homage to Captain Marvel how does Billy Batson's favorite phrase of astonishment, "Holy Moly!" sound as a tranformation phrase for him since he is a fan of comic books?

Maybe his costume transformed into the bucket. Hey, if the Human Torch anad Mr. Fantastic's costumes can handle their powers why not?
