Re: Valdorian Age

I just put in my order, after some minor credit card hassles. The card I used will expire next week, and I wanted to use one that would last a while, in case Hero keeps that kind of info handy (as if rabid fan-boys need "convenience" to get their fix), but due to an odd financial oversight, I don't have anything newer. Anyway, new cards are on the way.

Re: Valdorian Age

I picked mine up Sunday at the con and have been reading it since. I wasn't too thrilled when DoJ was talking about settings for Fantasy Hero, I like to keep HERO fairly generic so I can build my own (or steal worlds from other games), but the Tarakian age was well done and I am really liking what I see in the Valdorian age so far. Both settings look very playable, include many of the features that make up their sub-genre but are also unique to HERO. I always found the settings for the older HERO books kind of bland so never used them, DoJ has done well so far with their settings both with FH and SH. The Sorcery section is a nice change in magic systems that actually looks like it will have the high power but steel in the hand of a fighter is still a good remedy for evil sorcerers like in most S&S stories, some how this usually doesn't seem to work out in games and this time it might.

So :thumbup: from me for the Valdorian age.

Re: Valdorian Age

I would be very interested to hear more about the different nations/regions. You know something along the line of :

"Khor is somewhat akin to Cimmeria"

"Valdoria could be compared to Aquilonia but with a significant maritime aspect"...

"You can imagine ***** as if the Rus developped in an Egyptian inspired culture"

Anyone would like to enlightened me?

Re: Valdorian Age

Could someone please post a real review of the book please, and don't say it's like Conan cause that really does not mean crap.

Questions I would like to see hit on are thing like..........

Are Humans the only race left?

What kind of religons are there and can clerics still heal?

Who are the super powers(as in goverment)?

Is there a major bad guy who everyone looks at and says "yep he's the bad guy"?

Is there any reason to play anything other than a fighter or thief?

There are many more questions but these are some of the high points. I have not yet seen the book in store and I am not buying one on line till I know more about what I am getting.

Kidding aside, I would like to know more about all these aspects as well.

Re: Valdorian Age

Well, don't want to give too much away, but let's see...

Are Humans the only race left?

No, but they are the most important from the player's point of view.

What kind of religons are there and can clerics still heal?

While there are religions, there are not "clerics" in the fantasy sense. The gods have turned away from mortal concerns, and while there are still worshipers and priests, they don't get spells (at least, not directly). So, no, clerics can't still heal. Sorcerers are the primary spell casters, and don't generally get healing magic. There are notes for healing magic in the GM's section, but it's the GM's section.

Who are the super powers(as in goverment)?

Elweir is the most detailed area, a single city rife with corruption. The most important neighbor superpower is Valdoria, which is against the practice of sorcery and slavery. There are several others, including Abyzinia (I think I spelled that right), something of the antithesis of Valdoria (ruled by sorcerers, lots of slave trade).

Is there a major bad guy who everyone looks at and says "yep he's the bad guy"?

Not especially. The world is more "shades of gray" than the Turakian Age, for example, so a lot of what makes a villain is based on our own points of view.

Is there any reason to play anything other than a fighter or thief?

Can't really answer that one. If you didn't think of them as worthwhile in Turakian Age or Fantasy HERO in general, probably not. I generally find them quite useful as long as you buy abilities that a fighter or thief can't duplicate. I thought the rules for Sorcery were particularly cool, though.

And what are the other (fairly significant) nations? What are their cultural outlook? (For example in the Hyborian Age, Howard created Aquilonia akin to France and Stygia to Egypt.)

Re: Valdorian Age

Stereotypes are hard for some to get away from.

Quite true, but stereotypes sometimes exist for a reason. The big three for fantasy character designs are "Im focused on physical combat", "Im focused on using magic", and "Im focused on noncombat/technical skills." Fighter, wizard, thief. You can come up with combinations, and flavor, but a truely "original" character that can still participate in "traditional" fantasy storylines is hard to come up with.

Re: Valdorian Age

It really is a fantasy element. There would be very little leisure time or specialisation possible for those living there to focus on a particular area. Possibly only nobles and the rich would be able to. The rest of the population should have sundry skills based on trying to survive (ie farming, crafts etc). But that's my particular favourite setting - realism. And it doesn't appeal to everyone :)

Re: Valdorian Age

So if magic healing is all but gone then this going to be a very easy to die in campain. Combat will be all about hit first ' date=' hit hardest.[/quote']

Not necessarily. The lack of magical healing just means that characters need down time to heal. A mighty thewed warrior with a 20 Body and some Combat Luck (which is allowed with only slight modification) can survive quite a few fights, including some very tough opponents, before needing to rest and heal. As long as they get that chance, which is very typical for the source material, they could very well live to become king of Valdoria by their own hand.

If that's not to your taste, though, the options for healing can be applied and aren't particularly difficult. They just aren't "divine" in origin.

EDITED OUT

This is HERO. There are no character classes. It is not necessary to play a tightly constrained, pre-defined role. Unless one wants to play a stereotypical "fighter", "thief", or "mage", there's absolutely no reason to not play a character that possess decent combat skills and some talent with magic and some stealth and evasion skills.

You finally remove the wine stains from Lord Turgan's velvet doublet using the magic stain removing soap you got from the witch from the North Wood. While the doublet was drying on the clothesline, Kobold's steal the doublet and sneak it back to their lair. What do you do now?

Man that milk out the nose kinda funny!

Well Phil I see what you mean but alot of times you just do not get to rest all that much. I am thinking that it will be like the Western Hero game I was in. If you got in a big fight two days in a row or even worse on the same day, you could be in a world of hurt. It really depends on what the GM wants, I was just saying it could get ugly real easy.

It certainly could, if he throws enough damage to get through your Combat Luck/armor regularly, you get into enough fights before being able to rest that you are nickled and dimed to death, and he doesn't allow you the healing options in the back of the book. I'd look upon that as a bad game unless the death of characters was for some reason desirable.

Hey, Captainmissedthepoint -- before you make sarcastic quips about someone else's post, you might want to make sure you actually possess the reading comprehension skills to catch at least Clue One about what they were actually saying -- "but hey thanks for playing".

Kristopher I am sorry if My post hurt or offended I have deleted it. I was just joking as I thought you were. Even lacking reading comprehension skills I am aware that there are no required classes. That Fantasy Hero lets us build what ever we dream up and the GM gives his blessings. I used the terms I did because I felt they best got my point across. I am sorry if I was to vague as I am just a common man.
