A question regarding the Nostromo self-destruct video.  I can understand why a military vessel would have a self-destruct system, but why would a commercial vessel have one?  We're talking about a hugely expensive ore processor carrying a tremendous amount of valuable cargo, not to mention trained and experienced personnel.  There doesn't seem to be a reason to put the means to obliterate the ship and its crew in the hands of freighter jockeys (no offense to the Nostromo crew).

Hmm... a few possibilities come to mind. One, the scenario which happened in the movie -- the ship could pick up dangerous alien biological contamination, and have to be destroyed to prevent spreading it to other human settlements. Or the company owning it may not want their lost property to be salvaged by their competitors, i.e. "If we can't have it, nobody can."  Or the ship is engaged in illegal activities (which could apply to the Nostromo in this case) and its owners would want to destroy the evidence before the authorities find it.

Or maybe, by this time, space ships and self-destruct are such an old convention in fiction that everyone just automatically assumes they go together, like cats and fur balls. :eg:

It may be a means of dissuading rapacious space pirates from attacking company ships...perhaps?
