Citizen Keen
So, I was explaining to my friend how HERO can be used to create any character, any genre. (He's only played AD&D 2nd Ed.) I make the comment that there is no literary figure that can't be recreated in HERO. His response? "Hey, can we play Les Mis HERO?" -cK
Old Man
I thought Les Miserables was a musical, not a novel. *shrug* Tell him sure. Aski him if he wasn't to do the book version or the play version. The play version would require singing skill.
Citizen Keen
IIRC, Les Miserables is a novel, and Les Mis is the musical adaptation. I also include musicals in the term "literary"

BobGreenwade
Originally posted by Citizen Keen IIRC, Les Miserables is a novel, and Les Mis is the musical adaptation. "Les Mis" is a nickname for the musical Les Miserables. And yes, Les Miserables is a novel. It was written by Victor Hugo, the same man who gave us The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Citizen Keen
Thanks Bob. I knew it was something like that. In my circle, people always refer to the musical as Les Mis and the book as Les Miserables, so sometimes I get confused. Thanks.

Space Cadet
Cripes, the next thing you know, somebody out there'll want to play Crime and Punishment HERO, or War and Peace HERO, or...oh, never mind. Space Cadet

Space Cadet You roll your eyes, but people already do -- there are a number of free-form RPing groups online set in the world of romance novel settings, or musicals, or movies -- I was astonished. But War and Peace HERO would be cool. Or Middlemarch HERO. Hm.... -Shelley
Citizen Keen
Oh man, War and Peace HERO would be awesome! It's got war in it, right? And war always has interesting roleplaying opportunities, like... Laser Guns Hovertanks Patriot-Archetype Champions Aliens Giant Freakin' Explosions ... and more! Ok, I admit it. I'm a munchkin who never read Tolstoy.

Agent X
I am afraid many players are too young for Madam Bovary hero.
BobGreenwade
On a more serious note, if the Terran Empire-based game I'm currently working on doesn't fly, I'll probably set out doing something like CSI Hero.
Wyrm Ouroboros
Honestly, for good RPers, any 17th-19th century game is rife with RP hooks. Revolutions everywhere, small and large wars, Napoleon (twice!!), Prussia ... everything. Politics was rampant. And you can always make it an 'update' of the Three Musketeers... Space Cadet
How about a campaign based on literature's first known super- hero -- the Scarlet Pimpernel? Given the current feelings towards the French in certain quarters these days, I'd imagine that there would be more than a few RPers who'd welcome the opportunity to stick it to "those demmed Frenchies" -- at least in a campaign context. SP campaigns are a *lot* of fun! GURPS Scarlet Pimpernel is a good sourcebook for that. (And Age of Napoleon, recently out). *sigh* Someone needs to run a historical game for *me*! -Shelley
rjcurrie
Heck, I would buy a source book on any of the genres discussed in this thread. Sure, these genres are not going to be for everyone, but it's always fun to try different things. I've seen a convention game based on a concept similar to the musical Into The Woods, where characters from a number of fairy tales came together to solve a problem. Often times, a more unusual genre or sub-genre can provide the opportunity for new types of plots and very different role-playing prospects. The Hero System is only limited by the imaginations of the players and the GM. Rod

From what little I know about Sweeney Todd, that would be more along the lines of Victorian Age Hero than the Regency era. Space Cadet I'm not so sure about Munchausen HERO -- I think the stats would be constantly changing, as the story required -- but the regular game is a BLAST to get drunk -- er, to play. -Shelley
