Other Odd Twists

Option 1: Captured by an Asian warlord, an American genius inventor/industrialist is coerced into building weapon for his captor, a humanoid battlesuit, but dies of a heart attack before he can use it to escape. Instead, the suit's artificial intelligence avenges its creator and escapes, making its way back to the United States, where it modifies itself to be able to pose as human and dedicates itself to protecting the family the inventor left behind from all those out to steal their inheritance.

Option 2: Accidentally exposed to the radiation weapon he created, a government physicist discovers the biofeedback technique he uses to fight off the cancer transforms him to a super-strong giant. But if he loses his temper or his nerve, he reverts to his previous scrawny self.

Option 3: When he was approached by a mysterious man who wanted to take him into a cave, he did what any rational homeless boy would do. He ran for his life. But later he got curious and he and 5 of his street-kid friends returned to the cave, venturing inside to meet an old wizard who offered to give them the powers and identities of 6 legendary figures.

Option 4. A police detective from Earth suddenly found himself transported to Mars by a Martian wizard's miscast spell. Unable to return to his homeworld, he discovered that the lower gravity of Mars meant that the natives were physically weak and had slow reflexes and law enforcement was only carried out by bounty-hunters. He disguised himself and became one of the bounty-hunters.

I like that one - the Terran Martian Hunter. :)

The Lightning Bolt Gang. Heh.

I'm not a big fan of the intelligent battlesuit idea. I already loathe the updated Extremis Iron Man suit, and all the BS that's come out of it.

Tony Stark, director of Shield? This is a PARAMILITARY ORGANIZATION!!!!Why is it suddenly being run by Jackboot Fascist Corporation Man!!!!

Sorry. More Civil War Rant in my head. Just waiting to find Joe Quesada in a dark alleyway.

Re: Other Odd Twists

Log, you and I have very different opinions on this. One of my rules is "How far as has the character strayed from his original concept?"

The thing I loathe about all the BS they've done to Tony Stark is that part of his original concept was that he had certain physical frailties. Rather than get cocky and say "Oh, he can just rebuild all that stuff and be completely normal now," they take away from the heroicness of the character.

They kept the alcoholism, but the thing that always made Tony the coolest hero was needing to recharge his heart every couple days.

Taking that out RUINED the character for me. It took out the thing that made him most human.

Iron Man used to be an inspiration to people with heart disease everywhere, and now he's just a man in an armored suit.

Actually, I have since come to realize it would have been a bad idea in the mainstream universe, but we were talking about twistories here ;)

It's funny, a lot of comics ideas I had that seemed really cool when I was twelve don't seem like such a good idea now. Personally, I think the current writers are still in that "Ooh, cool!" phase.

Re: Other Odd Twists

Well, Log, the problem for me isn't the "Ooh, cool" part.

It's the constant cosmically retarded things and blatant miswriting of characters.

People have forgotten that there are human beings under the costumes and that the nature of a lot of the hero's relationship to the villain has NOTHING to do with the personal rivalries or hatreds between them.

It's the nature of the villain's powers or motives, sometimes, that make them a problem for the hero. The current comic book philosophy seems to be so videogamey, where a supervillain is nothing more than another Final Fantasy boss. They all have to be so retardedly evil that people have failed to realize that it's villains with redeeming qualities that have the most interplay.

I think these are intrinsically related, though. The "ooh, cool!" part is a purely visceral reaction to some mental image or idea that the writers imagine. Now, i don't want to get off on a rant here, but Millar has admitted that the entire idea behind Civil War was "Lets get heroes to fight heroes--cool!" He likened it to porn. That momentary "Oooh, cool!" moment would not make it to publication if they thought for two seconds about things like characterization, history, continuity, heroism, etc.

Of course that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Re: Other Odd Twists

I don't think so. I think they genuinely just don't understand history, comic books, or superheroes. They don't CARE about what these characters mean to people, because they're just trying to make a buck, and they live tiny lives outside of Marvel Comics where they can't seem to see any basic goodness in people.

In the old days, people were WORTH saving. Now, I think these guys look out of their office and say "People aren't worth saving anymore. Let's show them how we feel."

I can't decide which I like best. Either 2 or 3. Banner the student of Zen has its appeal, but so does the Godstorm gang :)

I agree with your sentament, but in reality (Marvel reality) having shrapnel in your heart in the 21st century really isn't as bad as it was during the Vietmam War. Espescially with friends like Reed Richards. Tony could have a Rad Cube for a heart if he wanted.

Oops, Wrong Doctor

Option 5: A brilliant young medical student, frustrated that his lame leg made it impossible for him to pursue a career in surgery (a speciality which involves a lot of standing) passed up an opportunity to vacation in Sweden to travel to Tibet to seek out a hermit reputed to offer miraculous cures. Although he had to hire someone to carry him up the mountain, when he arrived, the hermit offered to take him on as an apprentice. Apparently, he had an exceptional aptitude for weather control magic.

Twofer

No, crippled _leg_.

Dr. Donald Blake

Option 6: The ex-surgeon with the crippled hands had exhausted everything known to medical science and in desperation sought out a reclusive sage who dwelled on a mountain far from humanity. There in the Balkans, he found a kingdom of animal-men and their creator who taught the doctor things about biology no other man knew. He returned and continued to practice medicine, but now he specialised in the most bizarre and peculiar treatments and cases. He quickly lost his license, but continued unlicensed, and he was still the man to go to if you had a radioactive insect bite, an alien parasite, a case of lycanthropy.
