A ninja horde is still just a bunch of mooks you are supposed to wade through to get to the big boss (and his henchmen). Yes, they flip around in black suits with ninja weapons making sharp, loud exhalations of breath and sounding constipated - so what? That's all just FX. A mook is a mook. You should build and handle them accordingly. The real question is how important to the plot a given ninja is, and how tough a challenge he is supposed to be. Ninja Masters and named ninja [stormdancer, black lotus, etcetera] who play a significant plot role or serve as the clan's heavy hitters are the one's who should be built to go toe to toe with the PC [or PCs, as the case may be].

Duuuude' date=' if the players have 350, ninjas have to have [i']at least[/i] 500!!!

 

Of course, 300 of those points get the limitation "Not when with other ninjas", another 100 of his points get "Not when with four or more other ninjas", and for that Keystone Kops effect, the last 100 get "Not when with sixteen or more other ninjas". :sneaky:

 

 

I like... The final Ninja's will be some bad monkeys. The look in the players eyes as they close in on one remaining Ninja would be priceless.

The issue I had with Tsukikage was that her Physical Limitation of missing one eye would have been better as a Distinctive Feature. (I have/had an old character that was missing an eye, but compensated for it completely, so that's what I listed it as.)

 

As well as being way too tall for her era, especially as an Anime character. If the designer wanted her tall, but not towering over 90% of her supposed clientele, which by the way would make disguising herself nigh-impossible outside of always being in the shadows, something her character sheet says she doesn't do, at her tallest, Tsuki should have been 5' 4", and even then, that's pushing it if she wants to remain hidden.

 

But other than that, she's cool.

For missing an eye, it's hard to say. If it's just a visual, then it's a DF, if you play up the effect, then it's a Phys Lim. As for her height... I think I was going off stuff like Ninja Scroll, where everyone looks to be around 6' tall.

Actually, no. In Ninja Scroll, most of the 'tall' people are villains, a common feature in anime. Jubei himself is around 5' 8" or so. The Japanese of that era (And something they like to keep for most anime) are short, and having a giant woman as Tsuki as a heroine (Which is what she's depicted as) rather than an irredeemable villain (Like Explosive Powder Girl or Snake Woman) makes it odd, and makes Tsukikage a little awkward to those of us who are anime fans.

 

Again, this would make her to pull a Superman disguise effect if everywhere she goes, she's taller than the Samurai (Good and Bad) that she's facing. Sort of snapping the Suspenders of Disbelief.

 

She is however, one hell of a badass given her power set.

On the other hand, if she's in a full-blown fantasy setting, where exact height isn't an issue (such as Weapons of the Gods -- even if it's Chinese), then her being 5'8" isn't that much of an issue. So perhaps, she needs a note, with a realistic height and a fantasy height. :)

One thing about Boys' Anime is that they really like their David vs. Goliaths. The main hero will usually be either an 'everyman' which make him short, and average looking, compared to the really 'cool' people, or if he happens to be somewhat badass in his own right (Kenshin from Ruroni Kenshin, Naruto from same, or Jubei from Ninja Scroll) the villains will be taller, heavier and physically more imposing. The females will vary, but a hero class female will rarely be taller than the men around her, despite being more of a badass than they are, while the villains will be taller than them, but not from their male counterparts.

 

Female villains tend to be sharp and sleek, while male ones are more imposing, broad and often ugly. Amazingly like American comics.

 

That's all I'm sayin'. Of course all this talk of Ninja makes me want to play a Martial Artist in a Champions game. Seeing as the move revealed some long hidden scrolls of Martial Arts master that I owned. Namely the 5th Ed. Ninja Hero and my Copies of The Ultimate Martial Artist.:D

Ahh... heck with it, any game with a 500-point ninja like Tsukikage is pure fantasy, the real world need not apply.

Last time I checked, Bushido was still available from a Fantasy Games Unlimited web site. They've got old copies stored in a warehouse somewhere.

 

I ran across a used copy of Bushido at my local game store. The game mechanics are horrible old-school algebra exercises to be ignored. However, the book captured the samurai mindset, social structure, and culture wonderfully. The whole character-improvement/experience points system was based on the accumulation of personal honor and status -- "face." A character could actually lose experience levels by messing up or otherwise experiencing an embarrassing situation. Although I hated the mechanics, they did a good job of hammering "Honor is everything" into the players' heads. Also, ninjas are depicted as the gangsters they actually were in Japanese society. They may have a fancy move here or there but they're considered lower than pond scum by society.

Just give 'em OCV, DCV and Damage values. Describe everything else, from the smoke and flash bombs to the soft, moist thud they make as they slam into a wall, to the sounds of breaking glass as they enter and exit through the windows. If they get tagged, they go down. Or if they get tagged by twice by smaller attacks.

 

On another note: Sad that a Japanese artist had to swipe some ninjas from an American artist. Where's the national pride??

Speaking of mook ninjas...

 

This reminds me of the time I tried to get my wife to play Marvel Heroclix with me. I finally talked her into (pestered without mercy) trying the game. So, we got some starters and set it up. We had a ninja in the pack.

 

That would. not. die.

 

My wife finally cornered the guy on the edge of the map with a heavy hitter. (I forget who, but it was something stupidly overpowered like Firelord.) And she could not roll high enough to hit that ninja to save her life.

 

Well, we never played again, but I kept the ninja. I named him Lucky.

Alternatively/additionally:

 

VIPER: Coils of the Serpent has a couple of options that could yield ninja. First would be a Combat Specialist with the Melee Combat Specialist (and possibly Night Operations) package(s). Substitute taijitsu from Ultimate Martial Artist for the martial art option for the MCS package. You could also beef them up to preference with the Environmental Combat Package and/or the Superhuman Combat Specialist package. Second would be the "VIPER ninja", the Takara-Shinja, which should probably be used as is.

 

Overall: for ninja, think "agents". And there's no better source for villainous agents (IMO) than the VIPER book.
