Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

Hello everyone,

Ok I have changed my Avatar to a Space 1999 ship:D

but what about a Space 1999 Hero genre, I mean the tech

might actually come about by 2099 really. I liked the ships,

over-all tech, and etc!

Hmmm....Well, it might make an interesting PA Hero campaign....given the

moons escape is a disaster and all.....

Hmmm yet again.

Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

Two things. First if the radiation explosion caused some sort of warp field cnetered on the moon that until acted on by the gravitation pull of a planet would allow quick travel between the stars. Of course once the moon was out of the gravitional pull of a planet it would be moving in the warp field again.

Second, Earth with out the moon would also be a post apocalyptic as suddenly waves are freed from the moons influence. Imagine Space 1999 tech battling a world in Chaos.

Also as if I recall correctly, this is the same universe as UFO? Maybe the moving of the moon in part of a plan that neither Earth or Alpha knows about.

Moreover, Earth's axial tilt would not be stabilized between 22 and 24 degrees anymore, making an eventual shift to a tilt form 0 to 85 degrees possible...

But, about it being silly, well, I think it is assumed to be. It's like Star Wars; it doesn't make any sens, but, who gives... We'd be a happy (or unhappy) bunch if Space 1999 was the only silly setting possible...

I'd play in such a game. I like the setting.

Space: 1999 was just too cool. My only problems with the premise of blowing the moon out of orbit was irradiating planet earth with the fallout of that massive nuclear explosion, and why Moonbase Alpha wasn't also affected by the radiation. Trade nuclear waste for say, an antimatter factory and suddenly you;ve got Space: 2099! :)

Relying on old memories. Same production company, but I don't think they're the same universe. UFO could be the precursor to 1999?

Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

Yes UFO came before Space 1999, AND it was the same special effects

(model making company) that did both shows. Now UFO was a early 70's

show I do believe, and Space 1999 was late 70's..might have been 1977.

If they redid the show they would need to rename is Space 2099, and if

it was set in that time it's tech would fit with current projected tech.

Penn

PS: I would love to see the show done in Hero System.

UFO was set in the distant future of ... 1980. Clearly the producers were expecting space exploration to continue at the same pace it had been running for the previous decade, instead of screeching to a near-halt. Getting tech as advanced as Space 1999 by that year would be pushing things a bit, but might just be possible.

Ah but the tech of 1999 is much more feasible after stealing enough tech from the UFO Aliens.

Maybe it secretly goes on great guns but almost all of it is hidden because it's connected to the covert war against the invading aliens. There were some other interesting elements to UFO's 1980, though. For example the great popularity of wigs and a portrayal of race relations that was more than a little optimistic.

Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

Space 1999, gotta love that silly old show. Talk about suspension of disbelief! There used to be a website were someone counted every crewmember death and eagle destruction, listing them by episode, adding them all up to a total that suggested the moon dwellers died three times over.

Look out! Here comes the Quella drive. Queue the stock explosions, laser beaming staple guns, decompression whooshing sound and flying bodies…

Love it! Well, the first season anyway.

Same company & producers, but different "universes".When production on Space:1999 started it was suppose to be a spin-off of UFO.But the Anderson's decided to make it a stand-alone show.Starlog #10 I think had the back story of how 1999 came about, with some really cool pics of Moonbase Alpha sketches.I have it somewhere w/ my Moonbase Alpha Technical Notebook.

Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

If you ever run it, do your players a favor...

...don't start the game with the PCs in charge of Moonbase Alpha before the explosion and deny them any possibility of changing events, just to try to set the players up for the "sense of horror at their being responsible for the disaster".

(Yes, I had a GM do this in a PBeM... the game never got to the explosion event.)

Re: What about a Space 1999 Hero

UFO was set in the future earth of 1985, Space 1999 of course, in the far-flung future of that year. I remember on Sept 13, 1999 I though "hey, this is when the moon was supposed to be blown out of orbit - and it's not a friday." (it was a Monday) Yeah, they got that bit wrong, too. I mean, you can excuse them for not accurately predicting the development of the moon as real estate, but they could at least have gotten the calendar math right. August 1999 has a Friday the 13th for instance.

Folks go on and on about how Star Trek anticipated this or that, but y'know, the Space 1999 comlink sure was a lot like a cell phone.

Just remember to buy the lasers with the power limitation "doesn't work vs alien threat of the week."

How about a Mk.IX Hawk pilot with the psych limit "Afraid to fly in an Eagle". For a few more points use "Deathly afraid to fly in an Eagle when Koenig is the pilot" since he crashed five of them out of 28 total.
