Ragitsu
Re: Ctrl+V To each his own. To me, it doesn't make sense taking a route that's going to cause travel to be harder, significantly longer and increases one's exposure to the number of things that can cause an early death. Zombies are enough IMO. There's no guarantee there would be virtually no zombies underground. Manhole covers are not the only way into the systems; and zombies are not particular about the environment they're in. They will wander around wherever they end up. Other factors to consider - - How do you get around sewers in the dark? There may be work lights in some areas, other times not. Power grids go out, there may or may not be backup energy. Having to carry flashlights and making sure to have plenty of batteries seems like an extra burden, potentially causing one to forgo other supplies for lack of space or added weight. - Is it worth dropping or losing needed gear, ruining them or making them otherwise useless (e.g., contaminated foods). - How do you plan to carry enough drinkable water given carrying limitations? - Where do you plan to rest or sleep? - What if you or another in your party becomes significantly injured? - What do you do if your source of illumination goes out (e.g., flashlight breaks, gets wet, you lose it). - Some gases are odorless, some people have a poor sense of smell, or simply hard to detect what one is breathing. How are you going to safeguard against poisoning? (Soldiers fighting zombies are not likely to have left stray gas masks.) - Are you willing to risk using a lighter for illumination, with the great likelihood of flammable gas in the air? - What are you going to do in the event of a sewer fire? - How do you plan on knowing where you're going? How do you know the sewer system goes in the direction you need to travel, or goes as far as you need it to go? What if parts have been damaged and made impassable. How do you plan on getting your hands on a map of the sewer system beforehand? - What are you going to do if suddenly faced with flooding or rapidly moving water? Seems like a lot of added perils, and that's not even factoring in pests and infection. Inevitably, one WILL have to go back to street level for a multitude of reasons. I'll take my chances above ground, where I can see where I'm going, have options for directions and means of travel, find places to hold up in and, most importantly, stand a better chance of finding others with ground or air transportation that can get us the heck out of there. Susano
Re: Ctrl+V Ecology: Coming from a branch of the Family Tree that should have been pruned long ago, boggies are a shy people and prefer to remain out of sight of larger folk, such as humans, dwarves, and tax-collectors. Blessed with the ability to reduce even the most pristine wilderness into abject squalor in a matter of days, if not sooner, boggies are avoided by all of the rational peoples of Upper, Middle, and Lower Earth. This suits boggies just fine, as they have no interest in the goings on outside of their aptly-named homeland, the Sty. However, this doesn’t stop them from erecting expensive toll booths, devious speed traps, and cheap roadside attractions. Unfortunately (for boggies anyway), even the most elaborate of these sees little traffic, as all approaches to the Sty are well-marked with warning signs, not to mention the entire place appears blanker then North Korea when brought up on Google Maps. This has led to boggies being thought as little more than a myth, much like honest politicians, fair and balanced news reporting, and sightings of Elvis. Ragitsu
Re: Ctrl+V parry with your catching hand. You can also attempt to intercept a thrown object en route to a catcher. Treat this as a parry against a thrown weapon (see Parrying, p. 376). On a success, you snatch the thrown object out of the air.
