CptPatriot
I'm working on my X-COM military sci-fi game and a question came up on the role a spotter in a sniper team. What benefit would the sniper get from having a spotter, besides another set of eyes to locate targets?

NuSoardGraphite
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters The spotter should have the Analyze ballistic trajectory skill. He would make a skill roll then communicate that information to the sniper. Each character would then make a Teamwork skill roll and if successful, the bonus acquired from the spotter's Analyze roll is then given to the Sniper for the purpose of removing Range penalties to his attack. Simple really.
Hyper-Man
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters Beyond certain range & magnification the ability to see a target via a sniper/spotter scope is probably better modeled by the Clairvoyance Power (with Limitations like 'requires a steady hand' and 'requires line of site to target'). When a sniper fires a shot they tend to lose site of the target momentarily due to recoil. The spotter doesn't. A spotter could also carry a laser designator (see this old thread for its uses)
Matt Holck
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters when lobbing shells, A lot of scaling information can be gauged by difference between the first and the second shot. Xavier Onassiss
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters Another benefit is that the spotter can get closer to the target without giving away his position because he's not: a) carrying a big friggin' rifle, and potentially giving away his position with rifle fire. dmjalund
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters I think it will allow snipers to use maneuvers which require concentration on a given target, while the spotter is freer to look for other targets
Utech
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters If you're looking for something simple, you might assign extra CSLs or PSLs for use only when you have a spotter -- or have a Naked Advantage to buy off Limitations only when you have a spotter. AirborneRob
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters Also as a point of reference for shots at extreme range, a Canadian sniper holds the record atm with a confirmed kill at 1 1/2 miles. 薔薇語
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters Perhaps a bonus to OCV based on coordinating between the shooter and spotter. Ability to break up and have the spotter provide more indepth front line knowledge that the shooter could not perceive in their position. A spare set of eyes to confirm the value of camouflage. Is one is deployed for long durations, you have a partner to keep guard while you sleep. As only one really needs to bring the sniper gun, the other has additional room for supplies (radio, rations, etc). And the all important Coverfire support. ^^ La Rose. Reduced time acquiring subsequent targets, and a better ability to prioritize? Probably want to have tactics/teamwork skill.
Sean Waters
Re: Regarding Snipers and Spotters If you look on 6.1.57 under 'Complimentary Skills', you will see that one character can assist another using a complimentary skill. With something like sniping, it could all be about the combat moodifiers, but you might want to have some specialist sniping rules that deal with judging distance and windspeed and target movement. If it IS all about the OCV then you could have a rule that allows a single spotter to be counted for a multiple attacker bonus (giving a further +1 OCV), if he makes a 'Spotter Skill' roll (could be simply PER, or a specialsist skill). If you wanted to build it as a power, I'd suggest CSLs that are useable by another, or possibly succor OCV (all with 'Requires a Roll', and other appropriate modifiers).
