WWYCD: The Spark!

There's a new superhero (or is it heroine?) in town. Rumors of an electrically powered individual appearing, saving the day, and vanishing again have been spreading. The news has enough witnesses to take it seriously and at least investigate, and a few police have SEEN "The Spark" with their own eyes.

However, stories vary. While the Spark is always crackling with at least some electricity, and wears a skin tight costume of black with gold lightning like designs all over it and a domino mask, one officer says The Spark is a black female, about 5'6" in height, where another announces she's a blonde woman closer to 5'4". A person Spark rescued assures everyone that , no, the Spark is a 5'10" man with brown hair. Yet another witness, a young kid, assures everyone that The Spark is his dad, but the boy's father is a 52 year old balding man who admits he has no idea what his son is talking about.

If questioned more thoroughly, the kid's dad will admit he blacked out during a bank robbery, and woke up in an alley less than a half block away, but he's very embarrassed about 'running away'. He figures that's what he must have done. Bank cameras might have images of a balding superhero shooting lightning bolts though.

One day, as is typical, the hero is out with a DNPC when a rampaging supervillain (Ogre, Grond, pick one) comes onto the scene. As your hero gets ready to throw down, there is a bolt of electrical energy that seems to strike the DNPC and then BOOM, suddenly said DNPC is wearing aforementioned costume, with glowing eyes behind the mask.

"I am the Spark" Your DNPC announces, and proceeds to act most heroically. Not only does he/she have powers, but his/her body seems temporarily more athletic and any disabilities have been removed. The Spark (Now your DNPC) seems a 'standard' Energy Blaster and fights competently and valiantly. Spark seems willing to risk his/her life to save other innocents and stop the bad guy.

When the battle is done, a similar charge of energy to the one that claimed your DNPC leaves him/her and they 'wake up' with no memory of what just happened.

It becomes clear that "The Spark" uses the average citizens of your city as hosts to fight crime. Were it risking its own life, that would be fine, but the being in question must have a host to utilize its abilities. As more reports of "The Spark" hit the news, it becomes apparent bodies of the elderly and even children are not above the use.

And indeed, roughly one week after the heroes first meet 'the spark', a man will be hospitalized as he was hurt badly while the Spark possessed him. The fellow will be in critical but stable care, and when he wakes up, he'll be very very confused on how he got hurt.

What Would Your Character Do?

If someone tries to talk to the Spark, he/she seems all business at first. AFTER other lives are saved and evil thwarted, it may stay long enough to simply explain that "Evil must be opposed always" and if told it is endangering innocents itself, it will respond "Regretfully, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the one, or few" and then leave the body.

Heroes trying to contain it with some sort of machine that can trap electricity will probably succeed, much to the being's surprise, but over time the Spark will start to fade and wither as if being starved. In short, artificial containment appears to be killing it.

Re: WWYCD: The Spark!

Landslide:

Would be out of her league. She could ask if she is possible as host (not likely), but would require him to give her a lot more say during the fusion (the Spectre kind of host). If that isn't possible, she would propably ... ask somebody for help.

Grey Angel:

While she understands "the needs of the many", this isn't HIS life it is risking. If she can't convince/threaten it to search a amiciable host with shared personality, she would have to make a tough decision.

On the other hand she has much mroe advance tech, so she could built him a suiteable robot body. But she is very reluctant to give away her technology...

DD:

Would propably be the first to asume some sort of posession. She could deep probe Sparks Hosts to find clues, if they allow it. The second spoiler doesn't comes supprisingly for her and only makes her more determined to stop it.

Once she confront it, she would make it clear that a) she already killed beings like him, because they set their own goal above humans* and B) he either aquires a amiciable host with full voice, or she kills him. And she would make absolutely, possitive that it would stay down before trying it. She would go to his homeplace and kill it there if that is nessesary - she knows those "can't be really killed" beings far to risk it comming back (she is one herself, only to stop another one).

*to be fair, they both really, REALLY deserved it for other reasons. They tried to conquer the earth and/or universe in a Ori Style of way and shape it after their weird/extremist image. Sparky is the same, only he doesn't has enough power for that yet...

Super Model would try to talk it into only working through willing hosts who know the risks, but she's not really equipped to capture such a being (whaling on it to knock it out with her level of strength would be as dangerous to the hosts as what the Spark is doing). Probably she'd report any info she discovers to science-y types who'd have a better handle on it.

Kurzhaan the Conqueror would do some research, and be ready for their next meeting with a hefty Mental Transform spell to add a Psych Complication: Must obtain host's willing consent before endangering him/her. Problem solved.

Earth Girl is possessed by an elemental force herself (though she's in control of her actions), so she probably wouldn't interfere at all.

Young Scratch's primary heroic activity on earth is as an exorcist, so Mr. Needs of the Many would find himself handily evicted from his host if they ran into each other. Repeat offenses would prompt the response "I know some other folks that like to possess people against their will. Have fun hanging out with 'em for the next few centuries!"

Well' date=' Lady Heart will proably consult the Councle and The Court of Dreams about The Spark. Evently thay might come up with a perament host willing to be The Spark, or prehaps a magical way to contain it without killing it.[/quote']

Yeah, that was my first thought. Ideally, a person to volunteer to be the host when it wants to fight crime.

Re: WWYCD: The Spark!

It shouldn't be hard to find a person to volunteer to be a FULL TIME host, for that matter.

More information is needed. Is it even possible to leave the host conscious during possession, for example? For that matter, does the Spark have any choice about who to possess? Or when, or for how long?

Putting answers in spoilers,

If contact is made, the Spark can take anyone , but almost always goes for whoever is nearest the danger...sometimes taking the one who was the victim. Given its capacity to make pretty much anyone formidible while it is in charge. It can leave its host awake and aware, but it finds that cruel given the situation it is putting its host body into. The Spark thus has only done that once or twice. It can stay as long as it likes, but once an evil is vanquished it sees "no ethical reason" to stay.

Could the Spark Communicate with it's host, while being the active persona? Or could they even direclty share controll of the body?

And always keep in mind: A lot of the heros so far have threathened it with death and/or a curse, to make it "behave". Effectively saying that it either follows, or never get's to thwart evil again...

Re: WWYCD: The Spark!

Knighthawk, by happy coincidence might have an interesting solution to a scenario like this. He knows the location of a dozen cloned bodies, the left overs of a would be super soldier experiment. The bodies are essentially blank slates never having been conscious and without the programmed memories and skills that they were intended to have. All of them are fit, strong and healthy, perfect material for a superhero. He had no idea what to do with them but they could house "The Spark" for quite some time.
