Possible City of Heroes campaign

I'm working on a City of Heroes for a possible game to play online via Skype. I had planned on using the 6th Edition Hero System rules with 300 points with 75 points in Complications. I would be using Maptool with Skype for the audio, requesting that people use the Push-to-Talk option to eliminate excess chatter.

I wanted to get the opinion of the Herophiles to get comments and input on how I should implement it.

Sounds cool.

I would just do a campaign with the story background, but I wouldn't try to jam the powers into Hero.

I was thinking on converting some of my chars back into Hero from CoX just for the heck of it, but have some other projects to finish before I even start. (Haven't even had a chance to play CoX the last few weeks except for a brief evening)

Re: Possible City of Heroes campaign

Depends on exactly what you mean there. If you just want to use Paragon city as the background (or rogue isles, or Rikti, or whatever) go for it, a lot of former players would enjoy it and there is no need to put any constraints on powers

If you are wanting to "simulate" CoH in an RPG that would be a lot of work, as you would need to build all the different archetype powers yourself from HERO, try to balance them, and then let players earn each subsequent power during the course of the game. Could be really fun and nostalgic, but your going to be spending FOREVER building powers. And letting your "players" build them is an option, but could easily result in disputes.

I was thinking using Paragon City and the Rogue Isles. Simulating CoX in powers would be too much work with little gain and trying to balance them would be a pain. Playing in the game universe would be sufficient.

I'm thinking there might be some fun in discovery, like in the case of Crey Industries involvement with whatever illicit activities they are involved in or the Circle of Thorns and their relationship with Oranbega.

There was but the only thing still available to get is the City of Heroes RPG Quickplay Pack.

Wikipedia says:

The CoH team has also worked with Eden Studios, Inc. to create an RPG based on the MMORPG. While a free preview version of the game was released, the game has been indefinitely delayed due to the cancellation license with Fox on their Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel roleplaying-games. Pages on the game have since been removed from the main Eden Studios site and its discussion forums.

Well, if you plan to play it, play it now. It's not gonna be around for too much longer.

Re: Possible City of Heroes campaign

I think you can take the setting and NPCs and convert THAT into a Hero system setting, but trying to simulate the computer game itself is a doomed project. A computer game and a PnP game are just too different. The computer game has faster combat and no real skills for the characters and the PnP game has a greater emphasis on actual role playing.

But you know, that's OK. Once you accept you can't translate one to the other there's more you can do with it. You can go at your own pace, customize the content for your players, etc. So I would do that, write up the setting and decide what needs to stay and what should go. For example the zones are there mostly because the servers need them, since you don't you can do away with the war walls. In the beginning I wouldn't even write up the major heroes/villains since they're not necessary save for a deux ex machina. Instead I'd make Hero versions of the Skulls, Hellions, Clockwork, etc and adapt an existing story arc just to get your feet wet and see how it works out. You don't want to overbuild in case the campaign doesn't work out.

As for players who want to use their CoH characters and archtypes, well that's going to be tough. Best to avoid trying IMHO. At most I'd say to take the character concept then adapt it for the Hero system. Some things just don't work in PnP games. I'm going to use TP Foe as an example but making Hero versions of some powers has been discussed in other threads. The problem is that a power anyone can get early on can be hundreds of active points and would be a one-trick pony for the character.

I would be interested in such a campaign if you run it though.
