Armory
June 3rd 1888 - The first publication of Ernest L. Thayer’s poem Casey at the Bat appears in the San Francisco Examiner. The work is originally published under the pen name ‘Phin’, because the poet feels embarrassed by what he considers to be bad verse and decides to keep his identity a secret, until others come forward to claim the work to be their own. 1953 - Congress cites the research of New York City librarian Robert Henderson in proving that Alexander Cartwright founded baseball and not Abner Doubleday. His 1947 book Bat, Ball and Bishop documents Cartwright’s contributions to the origins of the game of baseball. GhostDancer

Armory
June 10, 1944 - Six weeks shy of his 16th birthday, Joe Nuxhall becomes the youngest person to play in a major league contest in this century. After being called in the ninth inning into a 13-0 rout by the Cardinals at Crosley Field, the 15-year-old high school southpaw, who will stay in the Reds organization for over sixty years, becoming best known as the voice for the team’s radio broadcasts, retires the first batter he faces, but is unable to get out of the inning, yielding five walks, two hits, one wild pitch, and five runs. I grew up listening to The Old Lefthander on Reds broadcasts in the '70s and early '80s. "Rounding third and heading for home."

All of the modern ones are dubious as best and some seem completely unjustified.

Cancer
Today is the 80th anniversary of the Szilard-Einstein letter to President Roosevelt, warning that very recent developments in physics meant that construction of what came be known as the atomic bomb was very likely to be possible, and that Nazi Germany seemed to be positioned to pursue developing such a device, and urging that the US should put resources into developing one for itself. Szilard (who was close to that research) wrote the letter, but sought out Einstein (who was not close to that research) to sign it, as the only physicist with a "big enough name" to persuade FDR to set things in motion. Though the history is contorted, this was one of the early triggers for what ultimately became the Manhattan Project.

GhostDancer
Here's a birthday salute to Joss Whedon's Firefly, which made its debut on this date in 2002. Though the TV series bombed, Firefly went on to become a well-received movie. The characters and concept are still popular with the show's many fans. - Tony Isabella
GhostDancer
This day in history, 1975, Pink Floyd's concept album Wish You Were Here reaches #1 in the United States and goes on to sell 13 million copies. Wanting to deliver an album that was as innovative as The Dark Side of the Moon, they decided to return to their experimental roots. The concept Pink Floyd settled upon was to use no traditional instruments at all - no guitar, no bass, and no drums. After frustrating months of sessions on "household objects," most of the band was ready to move on from the idea. But out of these ashes, Wish You Were Here was born.
