Hero Skills System already has an auto-roll rule: you only need to use your skill or characteristic rolls for actions out of the ordinary or under stressful conditions:

I discovered this while copying the rules for Western Hero, and it made a world of sense to me.

One powerful source, although it's not related to gaming, is looking for the YouTube channel for Jackson Crawford.  He has MANY hours devoted to this subject. That's effectively what the entire channel is about - Norse belief systems,  lifestyle,  religion,  history, etc.

@Lord Liaden, for the game I’m actually I’m looking at two types of games. One is just a solo game with my youngest. He’ll be playing Kratos so it’s using SuperHeroic rules (6th). I took a Storm Giant for a starting point and so far we’re at 500 pts. didn’t even buy his weapons yet.  I have Monsters, minions and Marauders which I’m using as a base and I can power them up as needed. Being solo I’m not worried about points just for feel and relationship of Kratos to the monsters.

Then it hit me at work that when a group of us play it’s usually Fantasy and talking to my other son he likes the idea of playing just a Norse style Fantasy game. Here of course will be Heroic level game and points and balance will be a bigger consideration. I told my youngest though he can have a Kratos “lite” version in that game.

So I’m going to see what I can reskin or modify and limit. For example, no plate armor. I’ll probably keep it to just humans. Trolls don’t have regeneration either. Stuff like that.

    For me it's Robot Warriors.

I hadn't actually played Robot Warriors from 1988 until lockdown was easing.  So 2021?  I ran it with 6th edition for characters and combat and Robot Warriors mecha design rules.  And it was every bit as fun and played 99% identical to how it played in 1988.

What were we talking about again?

There's also the saga's, there are some very good English translations, the Icelandic ones in particular. Also, archeological dig findings, for clothing, accessories, weapons and vessels. (dimensions, carrying capacity, ect.)

Do you have the source book, Vikings, published by Iron Crown Enterprises? It has game stats for Rolemaster and for HERO Fourth Edition. Very good historical, cultural and mythological info, numerous maps, evocative B&W artwork, and stats for a great many items, including Norse-style magic, creatures, distinctive character classes, and NPCs. More grounded in reality than the God of War computer games, though -- no stats for gods, for example.

Available in both PDF and hardcopy, but you might have to shop around for them.

Like I said too that this is also based on two things.

    1) How many books do you have? In this case if you only stick to the BBB then Viper creating villains (and Heroes) isn’t so bad. If I remember from the Enemies books, Death Commando was created by KRONOS and Orb by UNTIL everyone else by VIPER. So if you bought Classic Enemies then you’re back to mainly VIPER creating villains.

    2) Because a villain is in a book, does that mean that its in the campaign? I equate this to D&D. Forgotten Realms gladly includes any monster mentioned in the monster manuals however you don’t have to for your particular game. And you can believe that back in the day, I thought that it did and I couldn’t change anything because it was official! I’ve bought down that psyche disadvantage since then. 😁

Here’s a thought if one plays up the semi-independent nature of the nests then having VIPER creating a bunch of villains I don’t think is so bad.  Nest A created Crusader because they wanted an agent in the ranks of the FBI while Nest B is more in science and created Powerhouse while Nest C ran across the info to blackmail Bluejay.

I've run into that too many times on these boards. This is why I'm not looking at these forums too much anymore. We can do whatever we want with our games.

@Doc Democracy, your ideas on GMing are like mine. What I’ve notice on the boards here and there and other games is that people can’t fathom that what works for me may not work for you but that is fine.

Breaking down everything into abstractions is a good idea... in the abstract.

But we're people, who don't think about these kinds of things in the abstract.  We're playing a game in which our "playing pieces" are intended to represent people.

We're not playing a physics engine or a biology simulator.  I'm fond of saying "good enough is good enough", and I think that what we've got in 6e is good enough.  The mix of stats and the breakdowns and all.

If we keep breaking everything into pieces parts, you could have a character who can lift 12.5 tons but can't damage a normal person by punching them, but I can't imagine a person (which is, again, what our playing pieces are supposed to be) who can do that.

It's nice to keep some concrete representation.

It's mentioned in 6E II pp. 200-01 applying to weapons with the Strength Minimum or Real Weapon Limitations. Neither is typical in a superheroic genre game, and Ironclad's sword doesn't have either.

The maximum doubling of HKA base damage with added STR was the default rule under 4E and 5E, changed for 6E. I agree that it was probably just habit when Steve Long wrote that on Ironclad's character sheet. It's also repeated in his Champions Universe entry.

I never noticed that detail on Ironclad's sheets before. Then again, I also never noticed that his CU-entry sheet lists his "Ironclad Perseid Physiognomy" among his Defense Powers.

That's true for 4th and 5th editions. In 6th edition it's an optional rule. The 4d6 HKA could be a carry over from the older editions

There are a ton of golden age era comics online available to read, the earliest Superman comics are a hoot and very informative.  Especially Captain Marvel stories are terrific fun and show a lot of how things were approached.

Characters (humans) with stats of 13-15 are Notable.

Characters (humans) having stats of 16-20 are Remarkable - One in a Thousand.

Characters with a stat of 21+ are Incredible - One in a Million.

I’m going to politely disagree. Yes, Pre-6th has the figured formulas however 6th has more characteristics to he aware of. Leap for example is now separate one and I’ve forgotten more than once to buy up. The Powers themselves have more options which is fine for a more finely tuned character however more options are still more options. Btw, I’m still  salty about TK needing permeable to affect liquids.

I have not sought to take this into consideration with the straw man system because, to me, it is part of the tactics of the game.  My system is about what would happen in a closed room, toe to toe, ignores the effects of knock back.

    The system is so complex.

I am however going to do a bit of a play with Shrinker and Green Dragon to see if she has an optimal point.

I did a bit of stuff with the Golden Age about 15-20 years ago.

Golden Age superheroes were very cookie cutter. After noticing this, I created a template that included the common features of most Golden Age heroes, allowing me to really churn out the write-ups.

If I get around to it, I will post it here. It's on my old computer, so I can't just grab it. In any case, it was based on 250 point 5e characters, and would take a bit of modification for 6e and another point total.

Briefly though, I went with 20 Str, 20 Dex, 20 Con and 5 Spd as the baseline. About 100 points of characteristics, 125 of powers and 25 points of skills. Modify from there. Fairly low powered, but everyone was more or less the same. Naturally, these were starting versions of the characters.
