Simple, I changed the Base points. I did this for 3 reasons in no particular order. First, as you know even with Champions Supplement III there isn’t as many Disadvantages as in later 4th ed. Second, these are still sample, play around characters and I’m looking more at the combat rules than the Disadvantages. Thirdly, I always hated coming up with Disadvantages. I barely can come up with a back story at times. So I rather take Disadvantages that I can enjoy (if that’s the right word) than load up on frivolous Disadvantages that I’d ignore anyways.

When I think about it I didn't ever like D&D, and its super popular.  I mean I liked role playing and fantasy, and the idea of doing stuff in that world which D&D presented back when I started playing these games in 1979 but the system its self I never liked.  The single die roll, hit points, armor class, too many core features (still part of the game) were just lousy, and almost nobody alive used the standard 3d6 6 times for your character system.  We used 4d6, drop the lowest, arrange as you want system.

Fwiw, there is no consensus what constitutes OSR. Its about as subjective as what art is.
Funny thing is I thought I was different in that. Then I watched a video of Questing Beast and went over a book of monsters  and the one thing the book has is you roll randomly two out three things that you can encounter of a monster BEFORE  you encounter it. You could see tracks and maybe a smell. Or maybe see it from a distance and maybe see a scale that was dropped.

I’ll friendly disagree with this. However it truly isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and I do understand it. The style of older D&D of going into a dungeon and surviving is the story.  I’ve used the random die lately and the kids are on their seat of the their pants. That last roll nothing happened and they asked and I said you wont know.  One of the problems with random die rolls is that DMs have used them indiscriminately. Just because you roll that something happened shouldn’t equate a fight.

My mistake. Sledge DOES have his 1/2 RED END listed. And I did get to battle Warboar against thugs which went better. I can see why 8D6 is considered minimal. Not sure if I would want to play  a character that wimpy. Still, its been a neat experience.

One thing that caught my eye is that the claim of older characters had “cleaner” sheets-less clutter. Well, I looked at Sledge again and noticed that his END for using his sledge was off but it wasn’t. Sledge has RED EnD bought for his sledge but that’s not listed. Then I remember reading a blurb in Enemies III that they changed the format of the characters so that it was consistent and you could see how everything was bought. Anyways I thought it was it was interesting when the character debate pops up.

That’s a Kidney Punch, but I guess a Liver Punch could be built the same way. I was hoping to avoid making it too lethal though which is why I was looking at other options.

The Liver Punch comes in around the ninth and tenth ribs, so low in the Chest area or maybe the Stomach area, but to the side. In boxing, it’s usually done with a left hook since it has to hit the lower right side of the opponent at the bottom of their ribcage.

@LoneWolf, @rjcurrie I think i'll go with the Complication idea you two suggested. The ninja is a mute anyway, so being incapable of normal speech works out well.
    Something like this:
Physical Complication: Must be seen to communicate ("Voice" perceived by Sight and Mental group instead of Hearing group) (Infrequently, Barely Impairing)

    Reality.

I actually like the over-the-top ridiculosity of the 40k setting.  It's grimdark, but it also achieves scales of epicness that are rarely achieved in any scifi.  The Imperium spans vastnesses of both time and space in a way that just isn't conveyed in Wars, Trek, Traveller, or any other SF property.

To be fair in a fantasy setting how many would realize that? As long as it swords and axes and armor its fantasy. I myself have been learning a lot about the differences lately. I’ve been binging on Schola Gladiatoria.

@Duke Bushido, I’ve only played W40K as a war game however I have read some of the fiction of the setting and I agree with your assessment.  Do they have a term for something that's darker than grimdark? And some of the war gamers were annoying too. In a “real” conflict the Space Marines should try to use all the available cover they can get. I’m playing a game with a time limit though and that’s boring! I have walked straight into the middle of the board to take out the enemy. Heavy losses ? Yeah but then I’d somehow make an incredible and memorable save. I once had a marine attacked by the max amount of Orks that could touch my base and the Marine survived!

I was going to say that the only thing your magic system lacks is a way to encourage casters to choose thematically related spells, but it sounds like you're on the way toward fleshing that out.

Similar to EGO vs. DEX, you could resurrect the ancient Mana stat, thus saving your spell casters from having to invest in CON so much.

So on a lark I created a 3e character at 200 pts. I also used the recommend guidelines in the book but I used the minimum stats. I did this just to see the interplay of numbers and dice. Now I just had a battle against 3 UNTIL agents. Although Warboar went down, it was interesting and fun. 3e has some more wargame tactical elements to keep track off such as Range Modifiers change based on if Autofire was used.  Warboar did survive a 6D6 AF that hit him 6 times from one attack roll!  Warboar only has 40 STR and a whopping CV 6 plus one level for Punch and another for move bys and thrus.  It hurt him missing that Move Thru by one too.

@LoneWolf, are many attack spells are going to go against ED? Typically Heroic level characters and monsters have an unequal PD to ED. That also would provide a small bonus to the mage.

I’ve been skimming over Moldvey’s D&D. The thing that has struck me in the monster section is that he has some background for some monsters that I find interesting. I could use the information in my games as either fact or rumor. For example he notes that Giant Rats are found close to the Undead. If I use it as a fact then it makes sense why those monsters are together. If rumor, I’d make sure the players know it and ham it up!

More clothes and a fouler mouth.

In fact, the one female character I played, who became one of my unexpected mainstays, had the tagline "Red Sonja with Clothes!"

What if someone sets off an air raid siren? The heroes need to comfort the panicked populace. Could someone be stealing food rations? It could be a desperate family. How do you help? Someone is littering secretly the city with propaganda papers or perhaps hijacking the local air waves. How do you stop that?

An example of something with more to do than smash villains would be a plot by The Tremor, activating his new earthquake machine near Campaign City. The heroes will need to rescue people from damaged buildings and stop the damage from getting worse.

Imagine if this plot happens while a Senator or the President was visiting Campaign City.

The villain need not be very tough, and might only employ some goons.

I've long noticed that forum activity is seasonal, depending on what's going on in Real Life(tm). We've just come off summer vacation season, and now we're in the surge of back-to-school. I would say, let's give it a little time before we start to depress ourselves, see if things pick back up.
