Spence reacted to Doc Democracy in Experiences teaching people Hero Game system
My biggest epiphany in teaching people to play HERO has been treating the provided character sheet simply as a building sheet and designing a sheet that hides most of the numbers not needed often in gameplay, that uses words to describe powers rather than game terms, and has some design features that tie the sheet into the genre being played (even if that was simply a decent font).

This is a long-standing rant of mine.  game designers spend forever thinking of the mechanics and getting the rule book right and then seem to ruch out whatever black and white set of boxes with numbers in it that will suffice to hold the details the GM requires.

The character sheet is the players window to the system and the game.  The character sheet is the primary way in which the game designers must hook the players with the system and genre they are peddling.  We deserve better!

I would say the first sheet that put me on this loop was Justice Inc - it screamed pulp to me.  That was pre-cheap printing and PC design tools...so much could be done now.

Full Rip 9.0 by Sandi Doughton. Story of the discovery of the seismicity of Cascadia, the Seattle Fault, and the evolution of public policy about earthquake hazards here in WA. Includes correlation of the magnitude 9 Cascadia earthquake with a lethal tsunami recorded in Japan on 29 January 1700 ... and suggestions that such events happen every few centuries (i.e., we're due). Not sure the book will have any appeal outside of WA and northwestern OR and maybe extreme southwestern BC, but since my house is 5 or 6 miles from the Seattle Fault I found it interesting.

I read that, only it was called "The Guns of August".  I think it won an award.

Regardless of which book, the events of 100 years ago really force me to question my faith in humanity.  Absolutely no one came out of that looking good, and it doesn't help that they went right back for a second round twenty years later.

Because the suits are not fans of the genre, but merely schmucks that look at what the popular fad is today.

Read the sea without a shore by Drake. Leary and Mundy are asked to handle two linked but separate problems on a planet undergoing an insurrection/rebellion.

Maybe, the tenancy of pretty much everyone to extremely overstate threats in an effort to 'shock' stimulate interest or more frequently funding has made me take most of these style of claims with a grain of salt.

Just finished Shadow of Freedom by David Weber. The plot continues to thicken as the Star Kingdom of Manticore and the Solarian League edge closer to open warfare. But are they being manipulated (again)?

The latest installment in this series has far too many characters and some atrocious editing -- typical for an Honorverse novel. It also has lots of action, intrigue, and snappy dialogue, which make it a good read if you can get over the aforementioned hang-ups. For me, this series is a guilty pleasure, and I just keep plowing thru them regardless.

There are a lot of old shows and magazines/pulp that I think people are too quick to slap the 'racist' label on.  Racism is a problem and will be as long as there are humans, but there is an active difference between the 'ignoring reality to impose a belief' that is racism and 'abiding by a world view that you have been taught is true'.

I love running pulp of all kinds, it's my favorite genre, but I also run a 'suspended belief world'.  While I have support NPC's that are 100% stereotype, NAZI's, The Yellow Peril, Gun Moll's, etc.  All PC's and major NPC's are run totally color/sex blind in my 1936ish world.  No one bats an eye at a Captain Carter (I love that character in the movie).   I actually use it to my advantage in game.   In one adventure the Heroes were eating in the crowded dining car and were joined by an elegant Chinese Woman that they never suspected was really the nefarious Fu Manchu!  It was a lot of fun.

My point I guess is that you can beat yourself up about the past and never see some real gems, or you can realize that the majority of the people in the period were not evil, just uninformed.  Like cigarettes.  In the 20's and 30's they are a fixture and it is stupid to not show people smoking.  Back then there wasn't an evil conspiracy because people didn't know the drawbacks, only the perceived benefits.

All in all there is are a LOT of old serials and movies that can be enjoyed and pirated for RPG's.  You just have to be able to shift mental gears and realize that the reality we know to be true now, was in many cases never even thought of when they made those shows.   In many cases a local newspaper and radio station was there only window into the world further away than 20 miles.

so 99% of the news coverage has been Oso, WA disaster here.   A mountain side gave way and buried a community in 15+ of mud, soil and rock.

There were 46 structures of which ~30 were homes - 14 dead, 108 missing.
