It's funny how guns change our perspective. In the real world, the Roman ability to work steel and make short swords for their army made arming your troops with spears obsolete. Then cavalry brought (longer) spears back into vogue. When better metalworking allowed the creation of longswords, the short sword went away. But in fantasy games, we accept that huge list of weapons all existing at the same time, and all fairly well balanced against each other.

But not if we add guns. Guns are different. Just like everything else.

I don't disagree. If anything is common enough, including magic in the typical D&D setting, it stops feeling like magic.

How magical is a Magic Missile when every wizard casts it and every player knows the spell well enough to recite its effects from memory?

It's still "magic", but the mystery of magic has been removed.

Simply by adding rules, we make it "no longer magical".

The old DC Heroes game had an essay on grappling with this, especially after a discussion that, if two characters were equally powerful, the one using magic would win - because "it's magic". That works a lot better for fiction than gaming!

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honour and good sense.

I guess the CW shows could just show all their female characters dressing up as guys, with no one ever noticing. That was a Shakespearian trope, after all.

His knowledge of history tended to adapt to the side of any conflict the prevailing rulers favoured, so ignoring fact for fantasy must be OK.

And as long as we keep the angst down to Hamlet levels, it must be OK as well, right?

I have to say that Iris and Harry Wells urging Barry to find a better way than killing Grodd -- because his sense of moral responsibility is what makes him a hero -- was to me a refreshing change from the ruthlessness of recent "superhero" movies. I know such a stand is not fashionable now, and reasonable people can make reasonable  arguments why killing is sometimes necessary... but those speeches echoed the comics I grew up with, when superheroes represented ideals to strive for.

Ooh, how do you like your love ?
Ooh, how do you like your love ?
But if you want to know
    How I really feel
    Just get the cameras rollin'
    And get the action goin'
    Baby you know
My love for you is real
So take me where you want to
Me and my heart you steal

(More, more, more) How do you like it ? How do you like it ?

If the rain comes they run and hide their heads
They might as well be dead
If the rain comes, if the rain comes

When the sun shines they slip into the shade
    (when the sun shines down)
    And sip their lemonade
    (when the sun shines down)
When the sun shines, when the sun shines

    Rain, I don't mind
    Shine, the weather's fine

I can show you that when it starts to rain
    (when the rain comes down)
    Everything's the same
    (when the rain comes down)
I can show you, I can show you

    Rain, I don't mind
    Shine, the weather's fine

Can you hear me, that when it rains and shines
    (when it rains and shines)
    It's just a state of mind ?
    (when it rains and shines)
Can you hear me, can you hear me ?

I thought love was only true in fairytales
Meant for someone else but not for me
Love was out to get me
    That's the way it seemed
    Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
    I'm in love, I'm a believer
    I couldn't leave her if I tried
I thought love was more or less a givin' thing
Seems the more I gave the less I got
    What's the use in trying?
    All you get is pain
When I needed sunshine I got rain
Then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
    I'm in love, I'm a believer
    I couldn't leave her if I tried
Love was out to get me
Now that's the way it seemed
    Disappointment haunted all my dreams
Oh then I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
    I'm in love, I'm a believer
    I couldn't leave her if I tried
Yes I saw her face, now I'm a believer
Not a trace of doubt in my mind
Said I'm a believer, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
    (I'm a believer)
    Said I'm a believer, yeah
    (I'm a believer)
    Said I'm a believer, yeah
    (I'm a believer)

He was a fugitive with a pseudo name
Lost his mind in a hurricane
    Coconut upside his head
People said he'd be better dead
'cause his glory days are gone
Sits on the shore with his saxophone
    And plays

In another place, in another time
He was a soldier in his prime
    On the battlefield, makin' history
Young men died for his destiny
And their widows came each day
'til he was forced to run away
    From home

So he bought a town, but he sold the sea
    Claimed a shallow victory
On an iron ship, with a wooden crew
They hit the reef when the moon was new
Now he cries himself to sleep
On a beach made of promises he meant to keep
    Long ago

Nobody speaks to the captain no more
    Nobody talks about the war
Hey what the hell were we fighting for
Such a long, long time ago

And now the monkeys and the iguanas
    They listen to his song
    Most uncaptive audience
He plays to all night long

So the story goes, he was dressed to kill
When he jumped from the old mahogany mill
And the jungle beasts, they were heard to wail
As the saxophone still played the scale
For a man we never knew who looked like me and you
    Long ago

Nobody speaks to the captain no more
No one is interested in settling old scores
Hey what they hell were we fighting for
Such a long, long time ago

Nobody speaks to the captain no more
No one is interested in settling old scores
Hey what they hell were we fighting for
Such a long, long time ago

Up until Avengers, the "story so far" was all about leading into the gathering of the Avengers. At that point, I think there was a confab where they worked out how some early items could become Infinity Stones and that could be the next big arc (remembering also that the early comments on Thanos at the end of Avengers was that it was a shout-out to the fans, not a hint of things to come).

What's next? Dr. Strange wasn't really linked to the rest of the movies until we saw him talking with Thor. GotG had nothing to do with the rest of the MCU, other than "hey, an infinity stone". Build the characters, make good movies and let them integrate where the fit makes sense.

Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
    A girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Cellophane flowers of yellow and green
    Towering over your head
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
    And she's gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
    Aaaaahhhhh...

Follow her down to a bridge by a fountain
Where rocking horse people eat marshmallow pies
Everyone smiles as you drift past the flowers
    That grow so incredibly high

Newspaper taxis appear on the shore
    Waiting to take you away
Climb in the back with your head in the clouds
    And you're gone

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
    Aaaaahhhhh...

Picture yourself on a train in a station
With Plasticine porters with looking-glass ties
Suddenly someone is there at the turnstile
    The girl with kaleidoscope eyes

Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
    Aaaaahhhhh...
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
Lucy in the sky with diamonds
    Aaaaahhhhh...

What would you think if I sang out of tune
Would you stand up and walk out on me ?
Lend me your ears and I'll sing you a song
And I'll try not to sing out of key
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm gonna try with a little help from my friends

What do I do when my love is away ?
(Does it worry you to be alone ?)
How do I feel by the end of the day ?
(Are you sad because you're on your own ?)
No I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm I get high with a little help from my friends
Mm gonna try with a little help from my friends

    (Do you need anybody ?)
    I need somebody to love
    (Could it be anybody ?)
    I want somebody to love

(Would you believe in a love at first sight ?)
Yes I'm certain that it happens all the time
(What do you see when you turn out the light ?)
    I can't tell you, but I know it's mine
Oh I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm I get high with a little help from my friends
Oh I'm gonna try with a little help from my friends

    (Do you need anybody ?)
I just need someone to love
    (Could it be anybody ?)
    I want somebody to love

Oh I get by with a little help from my friends
Mm gonna try with a little help from my friends
Oh I get high with a little help from my friends
Yes I get by with a little help from my friends
With a little help from my friends
