  1. Re: A Random Bestiary, Anyone? I think if you have enough items on the tables it would be great. I'm the type that looks at a table for ideas, but has given up rolling on them. “Three, nope... I need a three, nope… three, nope. I’ll roll two dice, five and two? Five minus two is three, what luck!â€
  2. Re: Summoner Killer Shrike, would you mind posting the Hero Designer file for that character? I couldn't find it on your site. I’ll try not to sound too giddy, but that is one of the most incredible characters I’ve seen (yeah I know, I need to get out more).
  3. Re: Super Steve I have to agree with what everyone has been saying (Fanboy club member #5267). At first the involvement is impressive, but what has caught my eye in the past few weeks is also the lack of involvement. The system is flexible, and the fans are able to put forth their own interpretations and debate very minor details without having being beat over the head with official pronouncements. It is the ability to see ones work torn apart, rebuilt, and remain quiet that I truly respect.
  4. Re: Ekatrina, tips for the character I like the write up, especially the martial focus. I’ve always been a fan of the Rakshasha and other cat creatures, this is a good take on a cat like antagonist.
  5. Re: Best Section Header *Ever* That would be a section I would turn to first, and most likely remember for quite some time.
  6. Re: Herophile Fantasy art I just got through looking at some of the links to additional art. Very very nice, all the varied styles and subjects in this thread are inspirational. I hope I don’t miss throwing rep at anyone.
  7. Re: ...and the Bird you rode in on... Very nice, sort of like a Chocobo (from Final Fantasy), but eatable. I like the campaign use suggestion of some being twisted and augmented. I think for that reason I will definitely keep a copy of this handy. Good vs. Evil Wazzan has a certain appeal. EDIT: With near human intelligence, any skills?
  8. Re: Lighting things on fire. A handy little power, personally I would go with what MitchellS said and use Energy Blast. I don’t think I would use indirect, having the source invisible would be enough for it to be a cool trick, but I may be missing something with having that advantage. I threw this together real quick in Hero Designer just to show the cost difference (granted it still needs tweaking): 8 Ignite: Energy Blast 1 point, Invisible Power Effects, Source Only (Fully Invisible; +1/2), Reduced Endurance (0 END; +1/2), Uncontrolled (+1/2), Sticky (+1/2), Continuous (+1) (8 Active Points)
  9. Re: Lighting things on fire. I guess I still have multiple hang ups with using something of this nature. First is if characters powers are to have this effect, the cost seems a bit much. Second would be having the items stop burning. If you ignore the SFX of fire based powers by putting those effects into a power, why do you then settle for the special effects of the burning item "spreading as a normal fire, and burning out like a normal fire?" For me, if I’m going to quantify a special effect with a power write up, I would have to go all the way. The transform would have to be sticky, it would have to be linked to another transform that charred the item based on how long it burned, and also be independent etc.
  10. Re: Must Touch Target Limitation. Great point, but just to be technical, the "'target hex' is the hex immediately in front of the character" for some reason that sentence in FRED has always stuck with me. Almost like there is something diabolical I could do with it, but just can’t place my finger on it.
  11. Re: Lighting things on fire. It all seems a bit complex to me which if that is what you want then go right ahead. Somewhere, in the depths of some thread I saw Change Environment used to start small fires among combustible materials, that is my current favorite for starting random fires among combustible materials. If it doesn’t have a direct effect on game play, why calculate the Body of paper, wood chips, and coffee tables? Why not use a fire based attack because in essence, the effect of paper is that it burns easily. Now if you wanted to set a steel beam, a boulder, or the hood of a car on fire, perhaps then Transform is the way to go.
  12. Re: Anthropomorphic/Furry HERO Resources Palladium did a great job with the TMNT settng (from the comics). It of course followed their rules set so it should be similar to the Robotech/Rifts conversions.
  13. Re: A Treatise On "Only vs. (X) SFX" Limitations In my opinion good points were made. I may not have agreed, but the discussion overall is a part of what these boards are for. It’s good that we can explore the most detailed aspects of the system, we learn, we disagree, and thanks to the high class nature of the participants, we don’t come away with a bitter taste in our mouths (at least I hope “we†don’t.)
  14. Re: Is this a legal construct? I think the objection is to selling down your Characteristics and then buying them all back up as a power. For this construct I think it would be best to buy Strength as a Power which then lets you place limitations only on that portion of Strength that is added. EDIT: Great picture by the way.
  15. Re: Western / Steampunk Hero Idea Bouncing: "Bone Falls" I don’t have any figures on population data in front of me, so I can’t comment much on that. However, one thing to take into consideration is the whole westward migration. People went from what they considered at the time to be the crowded east to the un-crowded west. The reasons were many, but the ability to start a new life, and to get land that was virtually free were big motivators. When it comes to agriculture, the best land will obviously be worked first. It is only when land becomes scarce that the harder to work land gets used. In the south, undesirable land was worked by the poor. Another thing that came to my mind is the direct influence of other nations due to unsettled borders. Being an Oregonian I’ve had my share of history classes that cover the British influence in the area. What you could have is: A vs B, both are either fighting or working with different portions of C (natives), all while D and E (foreign nations) are trying to influence the outcome to suit their needs. The neighboring nation will obviously want the borders drawn to their liking, they also might be very interested in some commodity that the underdog has. Their influence will not be direct, but they would make good employers or antagonists for PC’s.
  16. Re: newbie - thinkin of getting these rules The one thing I really like about the HERO system is just how open it is. You can go from super heroes in 1349 England, to office workers in 2020 fighting off mutant space invaders. For me the appeal is the ability to take my favorite piece of each era and throw them together which recently has put me in the mood for a high tech future with magic and bio tech gadgets. Since I’m currently going through the learning process I feel very qualified to say that the learning curve is not too steep, at least I don’t feel that it is any steeper then other popular games on the market. I am currently learning the finer points of the system, with its openness there are many, but they don’t prevent you from playing. You learn one basic system for all genres that you want to run, and that is it. Although it is easy for the player, for the GM it is a bit more difficult. Putting together the campaign world takes a little more work, but at the same time that is a big part of the fun. If you want to run a campaign in an established world the online store has various campaign books from Fantasy to Future, making the GM’s job considerably easier. It’s when you want to run an original campaign that it gets a bit tougher, but that is where these message boards come in. Help and opinions tend to flow freely here when it comes to campaign building. When it boils down to it the HERO system provides the ability to play in any world that you can imagine, with a rule system that is as complex as you allow it to be.
  17. Re: I touched it! True, very true, fortunately I’ve not bought every HERO product, but the sad thing is a little voice in the back of my head is telling me I should. The Pulp book will probably be last, as I have no interest in the setting, but that little voice keeps saying “make the collection whole, it will contain little gems to use someplace else.†Must resist… will not buy every product… bah I give up.
  18. Re: Fire and the power to combust.... One way that I have seen it written up was with Change Environment. With that you can include smoke and other effects.
  19. Re: Little Anthony & The Imperials Shhhh Nothing to see here, move along. I doubt they can do much to someone who is "contemplating" a thought such as his. Now that he has been warned I'll just sit back and hope that I am on his "friends" list.
  20. Re: Western / Steampunk Hero Idea Bouncing: "Bone Falls"
  21. Re: Western / Steampunk Hero Idea Bouncing: "Bone Falls" Sounds like a very interesting setting. One thing you might look to set are any cultural or social differences within the nation. For instance in the United States you had large differences between North and South, and also between East and West. If your setting is in the “Wild West†is it directly influenced by events in the population centers? Are your territories being persuaded to join one side or another through direct or indirect action? Is there some form of false idolization of the West by people in more established areas? One other area to look at is what type of communication and transportation network you want to have. Is there coast to coast telegraph and rail service? Or, like many movie and TV show plots, is this something that is currently being deployed?
  22. Re: Don't be a hater! I’ll be completely honest, I am 100% against the position that Agent X has taken on this issue, but do we really need to go this far? This is just getting silly. Besides, see post #147, this issue has been covered.
