Finally finished binging it - excellent show and can't wait for Season 2!

Re guns being worthless, well yeah it's kindof a genre thing. Bugs me too but it's hardly unique to this show.

Honestly the only thing that really twigged my suspension of disbelief? The fact that the "townies" were so ignorant of the Lab and its employees. This comes from my having grown up outside a DOE lab (Los Alamos). Where do you think all the lab personnel live? In the community. Half the town would be working at the lab, and everyone else would know someone who worked there. Need to know what's going on at the lab? Lemme go talk to my sister who's on the cleaning staff or my cousin who's a computer tech there. The Lab Director would be a local celebrity - not necessarily liked, but certainly known. The Sheriff would have the Lab security force on speed dial and vice-versa; I'm not saying they'd always get along or cooperate well, but they'd damn sure know one another. So it was jarring to me that folks in town barely seemed aware of the existence of what would certainly be one of the major employers in the area.

But that's just me and my baggage.

It was a time of great decline and despair. Mankind was scraping an illiterate, bestial existence out of the ruins of once-shining empires. Forgotten were the secrets of how to make the straight roads and the great structures that still dotted the landscape. The memory of these empires was so dim that some places attributed these ruins to giants, for mortal men could never have built such wonders. Libraries were few and those who could read them fewer still; what knowledge remained was carefully preserved by monks and guilds who barely understood it, let alone how we came by the knowledge to begin with. Indeed, in those times a stack of half a dozen books was regarded as a library. Order was maintained through force of arms, not law; the common people were stalked by banditry, plague, famine, and godless hordes out of the East. With each passing year, structures decayed, populations shrank, knowledge faded, and hope dimmed. The end times were nigh--that was plain as day to anyone.

I guess. I'm not familiar with the 1001 setting exactly, just the 1001 I lived through.

Eh, Simpson is the Netflix version of Nuke. He was always a sort of one-dimensional character to me anyway. I see him as existing only for the good guys to have a punching bag. "Give me a Red!" **Daredevil smacks him a few times.**

I actually really enjoyed both Kingpin and Punisher. They were certainly different takes than the Marvel mainstream versions, but each of them really hit the right chords in my opinion. My blah character was Electra. I was just not convinced that she was some really kickass assassin. I got more of a female Dexter vibe than anything. Not sure why everybody hates Karen Page, but different folks/strokes. I thought she did better than okay. Not my favorite character perhaps, but far from my least favorite.

The early Daredevil season 1, where they are building up how dangerous Kingpin is are gold. Love that part of the series.

The paper behind this just came out in Nature. Really nice result. A bright nova (V1213 Centauri, IIRC) was in one of the OGLE fields, which are observed several times a week with dedicated instruments in order to catch gravitational lensing events. So they have extensive monitoring of the star over 2009-2016, and the big outburst was in the middle of that. Behavior of the nova definitely changed after the big outburst, and it did so in general agreement with overall theories of how novae work. I expect bigger scientific payoff when more analysis and calculation is done, but this is a really promising event to have observed that thoroughly. It reminds me of the very different "slow nova" system RR Telescopii, which was captured in survey plates for 40+ years prior to the outburst start in 1944.

On All Things Considered a few minutes ago, I heard a brief BBC report about astronomers who saw a nova explosion from the start, and even a little bit before. There've been theories, but apparently this is the first observation that can confirm or deny them. I hope to hear more about this.
