  4. Re: Cost of strength vs. benefit Gary, please point out where I began to give the impression that I was arguing that a character with a naked energy blast (NOT inside any type of power framework) could be competitive with a Brick? To my knowledge, I never did. This whole time I have been arguing the point that you just conceded! Which makes the case that the majority of other posters to this thread seem to agree with: STR is NOT too cheap or too powerful.
  5. Re: Cost of strength vs. benefit I seem to recall that STR usable at range should be bought at Telekinesis which does not give any figured stats the last time I checked. But sidestepping that argurment you are still not going to get enough points from figured stat savings to handle every variable situation that his lack of range and lack of points to invest in a power framework are going to cause. The bricks that you describe appear to be very very good at combat and little else. To round out their non combat powers (not skills, as they are just an application of straight points) they are actually going to lose in the points efficiency race vs. an EB with a big multipower reserve. Every point invested in STR for the purposes of high interest figured returns is a long term investment vs. the alternative low interest but high liquidity setup of other character types who can better react to market/combat conditions with many more options. BTW, a brick who depends on thrown objects of opportunity more than just a few times is encouraged to buy the actual ranged attacks according to what I read in the ultimate brick playtest material.
  6. Re: Free version of the HERO System uh oh! my Hyper-Senses detect another thread on the way! HERO vs. GURPS! Agghh!! run! hide you character sheets!! hide your dice!! find some Brain Pepto as this could take a while!
  7. Re: Cost of strength vs. benefit lol. so can u explain it to the rest of us buhda master?
  8. Re: Cost of strength vs. benefit both of your examples assume that combat is on the ground. What about opponents in the air. Not to many things to grab and use as a free weapon at that point. Or things to leap off of either. What if the enemy is trying to get away from the brick and has flight. a movethrough or half move leap and grab are pretty much one shot attempts in this case. which is better in a fight between an appache helicopter vs. an M-1 tank. well the helicopter of course since it was designed to fight tanks and the tank was designed to fight OTHER tanks. Reliance on an attack that reliably is no-range most of the time puts the Brick at a tactical disadvantage most of the time. He is the charging bull that the bullfighters can usually outmaneuver.
  9. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER sounds like an interresting way to deal with a combat fillibuster. "has X shut up yet?" "nope." "pass me the Brain Pepto , this is gonna be a long session tonight..."
  10. Re: Longest Running Thread EVER Yeah, but then we might have to start calling you the Perky Pooper!
  11. Re: Cost of strength vs. benefit your missing the point of most of the examples I gave Gary. The EB can use his ranged attacks to increase his chances to hit, weed out the holograms and not have to reach out and actually touch his targets. Depending on terrain is a dicey proposition and can have out of combat consequences above and beyond those that the EB might deal with. Range gives more options. If just smacking target X is the ONLY GOAL, the Brick probably better. Target X is rarely going to stand toe to toe for that very reason and will plan accordingly. Bricks are the most effective but also the easiest to plan for type of character. A master villian knows how strong Brick Z is and devises defenses/traps etc.. to deal with him. Other types of powers (which neatly fit into various power frameworks that include primary ranged attacks) are usually necessary to deal with such obstacles. Pure COMBAT ability is NOT the only measure of effectiveness*. * have you decided to not participate in the combat wombat thread?

  18. Re: accepting rules suggestions for 1st Annual Combat Wombat Steel Cage Grudge Match!
  19. Re: accepting rules suggestions for 1st Annual Combat Wombat Steel Cage Grudge Match! I don't believe that it is a GIVEN that a STR based character will automatically be the best 'type' for this contest if using the limits I stated earlier. This is mainly due to the movement and sensing requirements that are part of the different scenarios. Unless anyone can come up with some more scenarios I recommend using the ones I listed earlier and just give the 1 on 1 combat a value of 2 points and the winners of each of the other 3 contests 1 point, (remember the offense vs. defense is run twice) which makes it possible to win the overall grudge match without being able to actually win every 1 on 1 fight. We can always run 2 different tournaments. Unlimited and Limited. What I have proposed so far is limited. This is what I am more interrested. I think the tournament format using 4 different goals could be used in both cases. Please post any more comments regarding rules for all 3 areas of discussion. tournament format unlimitied creation rules limited creation rules *In a few days I will create a poll to nail these down and then I will create either 1 or 2 more threads to submit contestant characters to be voted on by all judges/board members.
