  1. I've been buying more board games lately. Unfortunately, the difference in price between online stores and my local board game store are pretty wide: a $10 difference or even $25 on the bigger, higher-priced games. The local store appears to just have everything set at standard retail price. Meanwhile, I can easily find a lower price online with free shipping. I'm not even referring to Amazon. I mean like CoolStuffInc and other places online. So... why should I buy locally? I have an urge to support a local business, but I honestly can't bring myself to pay this much extra money, repeatedly, when I can consistently save a non-negligible amount. I do live in a larger city, and the store appears to get a great amount of customers. There were about 60-70 people there on Saturday evening. What are your thoughts on this?

    More space news!

Would we have heard of any of these viable alternatives? (e.g., loop quantum gravity, string theory)
  3. I'm sorry that I missed this thread before! I am potentially interested! I'll PM you.
  4. How did you come up with your 'handle' (forum name)? "Jhaierr" is the name of a character from a fantasy world created by myself and a friend. He is a panther-like warrior prince of the feline humanoid race. What was the first tabletop RPG you played? Middle Earth Role-Playing (MERP) What was the first tabletop RPG you GMed? Middle Earth Role-Playing (MERP) - In fact, I began as a GM. What are you currently playing/GMing? Nothing, unfortunately. I was most recently GMing a superhero Champions 6E game online with friends, but I had to put it on hold during my internship and while I finish the last year of grad school.
  5. I think you overlooked, "Take precautions, fine." The point is that we don't do much about teaching boys about respecting someone else's choices; we all too often place the responsibility of preventing rape on girls' shoulders instead. We should help women to defend themselves against others, but the bulk of the work should be in primary prevention (i.e., working on interventions for men who might take advantage of women). I'm not talking about grabbing women in parking garages and raping them; I'm talking about coercion, manipulation, taking advantage of inebriation, etc. The messages that we get from our culture tell us that women are here to please (heterosexual) men, and we have to work on undoing this in some way if we are going to create a better world where everyone understands what consent is. For those that don't or refuse, yes, take precautions against them.
  6. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities That last post was more of a derail than I intended. This thread was an excellent read and brought up so many important points. This semester I'm teaching a class on gender. I think I might use some of the material linked here in my class discussions.
  7. Re: Interesting article about Sexism in Geek Communities I've seen this as well (and even on these boards) as far as LGB aspects of games are concerned. Heaven forbid we spend any amount of "effort" to add any LGB characters or options to games--any "effort" spent will naturally reduce the quality of the games. One example is adding same-sex romance options to Star Wars: The Old Republic. Another is adding any references to same-sex relationships in Champions/Hero sourcebooks. And it's all seen as being "political" or a case of "if we do that then we'll have to do that for every conceivable iteration of 'minority.' OMGERD!"
  8. Re: MYTHIC HERO: What Do *You* Want To See? Okay, that's good to know. (Hero System Pantheons, perhaps? )
  9. Re: MYTHIC HERO: What Do *You* Want To See? Mythic Hero sounds awesome. I'm a little curious about the name of the product, though. When I read it I think "genre book for playing in mythological settings," but the description seems to lean toward a compendium of mythic gods and beings instead...
  10. Re: The cranky thread I am frustrated and angry. I'm trying to complete a (very amicable and much agreed upon) civil union dissolution (i.e., divorce). Since we have nothing we disagree about, I'd like to use one of the low-cost online divorce services that we can fill out ourselves instead of being charged around $2500 for getting a lawyer to do it. Unfortunately, NONE of the sites I have found (e.g., 3stepdivorce.com, legalzoom.com) offer help with civil unions. I'm checking on completecase.com, but I'm not holding my breath. Google searches and the like reveal nothing of any use. It's rare that I feel my second class citizenship so strongly. Makes me angry, sad, and very cranky. This is my very first post to the cranky thread.
