  1. Re: I am a comic book dinosaur. JSA still has that great "old time" feel to the comic- well it has all the old time heroes so go figure- and is probably one of the best monthly issues out there. JLA is working its way back to being that way too, or at least that is what I feel they are doing. I haven't read Marvel with any regularity since the Infinity Gauntlet. Though the J. Michael Straczynski stuff, I believe, is really well done. I do like some of the "modern" comics but I still reread a lot of my older ones- especially those written by Waid, Morrison, Gaiman, Milligan, Giffen, and David. I know there are others, but those are the main ones. I definitely agree with everyone here about the animated shows, though. Those really capture that feel you are looking for.
  2. Re: What Kind of Heroes do you GM? I'm in a unique position in which none of my players have ever played Champions / Hero System. They have extensive experience in fantasy d20 and some in Superhero d20 and other various systems. I can get them to try just about any game as long as no one has to buy anything, so I get to create everything for the campaign I am interested in running. I've stuck with the stereotypes, here's the list: http://www.herogames.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52975 , though I no longer need the 8th character. I'll only need 5 or 6 of the original 8 planned. I am really interested in capturing the feel of a Bronze/Silver Age, but will probably explore all the ages if it goes on long enough. (All my players love the animated shows Batman, JL, Superman, Teen Titans, though I think I'm the only one that is currently watching LSH and liking it.) So that is definitely the feel I want to go for. And since I'm designing everything hopefully I'll be able to capture that feel.
  3. Re: Favorite All Time Hero/Villian/Group All my favorite heroes are in the books JLA, JSA, and LSH. My overall favorite hero would have to be the Flash- any that have carried that name. My favorite anti-hero would be John Constantine. My favorite villain group would have to be the Legion of Doom. My favorite single villain would have to be the Riddler. (Run Riddler Run) I guess that was all DC. For Marvel I would have to go with: Hero team: X-Men, the original. Favorite Hero: Moon Knight or Dr Strange (tied) with Daredevil a close second. Villain Team: Hellfire Club Favorite Villain: Typhoid Mary
  4. Re: Best superhero titles of the 70's Ghost Rider, Dr Strange from Marvel. Some of their other spooky titles. DC from this era was pretty bad, Detective Comics was almost canceled I believe. But overall I think Legion of Superheroes was the best. Followed closely by their spooky titles. I read a lot of EC, but they may have been reprints, I can't remember.
  5. Re: Regrettable Disads Reply to BcAugust: Well, they only played around with one disad from everyone's character sheet if they thought it was just there for the points. ( Which mine was and I deserved it.) Plus they thought it was funny. It was my original group that I played with for years. It really didn't bother me because I got to be in on a few when others created disads just for the points. It did teach me to be more objective with my disads. I cannot ever remember this DNPC ever coming into play.
  6. Re: Regrettable Disads I took an incompetent DNPC but never clearly defined it. (8 or less roll.) I had meant it to be a buddy from the military that had saved his life in the accident that gave my character their powers, but left the NPC disabled, but never wrote it up. The other players in the group eventually just decided that I was taking care of a mentally disabled person. (Not that I really cared.) When I tried to tell them what the NPC was, they said no that they had already written it down and had gave the information to the GM. I don't think the NPC ever really came into play anyways. (I found out later that everyone in the group got to play around with another person's disad when they thought it was lame.)
  7. Re: 4th Edition Character sheets Did you look here? http://www.rpgsheets.com/ I find all sorts of interesting things there. They have most of the 4th edition sheets there.
  8. Re: Venture Brothers Hero? Yeah, have to agree that this is one of the best shows on cartoon network. I'd definitely play in a game like this as either modern day pulp or low level supers.
  9. Re: The Hero Forum's Hottest Woman in Comics. Mary Marvel going to the dark side....
  10. Re: How do you handle Super Battle damage in your Campaigns ? Pretty much the same as every other person here. I use Superhero Insurance that the Heroes and/or regular people can buy. (Pretty expensive for the heroes, not so expensive for regular Joe Schmoe.) The cities in which super powered people interact also carry insurance. The heroes chipping in and helping clean up the mess also goes a long way. It's pretty much a standard for any hero team that wants to be officially sanctioned to have to carry the insurance. Helping clean up the mess afterwards is pure PR. If it gets really bad, a state of emergency could always be called by the governor and/or the President. (Then tax dollars go to help rebuild.)
  11. Re: WWYCD: Dead Enemies are no fun. Plex Due to his major Code vs Killing and his honor code he would immediately turn himself in. The rest of the team would go out and prove his innocence. He would not expose his secret id and potentially put those loved ones at risk even if it gave him an air tight alibi. He would have total faith and trust in his teammates to prove his innocence. He would also go out and hire the best lawyer. (He's not stupid.)
  12. Re: Worst. Hero. Ever. Dazzler - she's based off disco, what could possibly be worse.
  13. Re: WWYCD: the times of peace are upon us Plex1- Go on the comedy circuit, perhaps make some movies, marry the long standing GF and have kids. Plex2- Probably become his brothers' manager. Start living his life for himself.
  14. Re: Worst. Hero. Ever. Bat-Mite
  15. http://steampunkworkshop.com/keyboard.shtml This is just way too cool and thought I would post it here. If I had the time I would so do this for my computer.
  16. Re: DM of the Rings I believe that any race other than human was considered a class in the early version. (At least in the red and blue basic and expert sets I learned how to play the game.) The halflings were the thief class, dwarves wwere fighters, and elves were magical. Humans could be fighters, clerics, or mages. But beyond that, this strip is erally funny. I've sent the link to all my players and now they are hooked. It is a shame that the strip fits so well for my own D&D campaign.
  17. Re: Best ever reason NOT to be a sidekick(hero support) Rick Veitch's Bratpack. Live fast, Love hard. Die with your mask on.
  18. Re: Best ever Reason to NOT be a superVillian!! How tough can it actually be to take over and rule the world when you are a god? (At least in your own mind.) OR EXTERMINATE!!!! EXTERMINATE!!!!! EXTERMINATE!!!! (Has it ever worked yet?)
  19. Re: Best ever reason to NOT be a superhero... A couch potato after watching Stan Lee's Who Want's To Be a Superhero and the upcoming 2nd season and thinks; "Jeez, that doesn't look so tough, even I could do that." (Thinking that is all it takes to be a true hero.)
  20. Re: Your occupation, please. Plex 1 was a test pilot and driver Plex 2 was a mechanic Mindstar was a Doctor Modred was a spiritualist That was the only characters I played with any regularity. (Though I did play a Dark Champions character a few times that was a lead singer in a metal band. Attitude like Nathan Explosion and with sonic powers, go figure.) The players in my current group are: Rush Doctor/Surgeon Vulcan Scientist/Engineer Titan Artist Star Spangled Banner Diplomat Persona Private Investigator Psyche Private Investigator teamed up with Persona Arcane Wealthy, no job in particular (keeper of lost and forgotton lore) Eclipse Ambassador
  21. Re: Team Base... Who pays? When I was a player we all chipped in XP to pay for the base. What we couldn't cover was done so through disads, government influence, and other interesting side effects that the GM would come with. (Like an AI with a wicked sense of humor/practical jokes.) For the campaign I will be starting up shortly, I'll be giving the base to the PCs. Since only 1 of my 8 players has actually played the Hero System before, I thought it would be interesting to give them a base to use. This base doesn't come without some interesting side effects, though. The base was built originally by a Tony Stark type of person. He and his group disappeared about 10 years ago in an alternate dimension. The AI running the base did not know where they went, and has spent the time since then keeping up the base and appearances at the office. (They're stuck in a magical dimension and the AI cannot see magic.) The AI will recruit the players in the guise of the Tony Stark character- albeit "damaged" from some experiment gone awry. (Actually a construct that the AI works through.) He's recruiting them for the purpose of finding out what happened to the team and of course to protect him- as in the AI- from Mechannon, who in my universe was accidentally created by the AI. There is also a magic lab in the base that the AI doesn't know is there and it is locked. The players will need to get in there to find out what happened to the team that is stuck in the alternate dimension. Eventually they will get the team back to this world- I hope. Then the real fun will begin since the original owners will want their base back.... Ooops, I think I got a little off topic there. Well, that's what I plan on doing in a nut shell. There's more to it than that.
  22. Re: [Review] The Algernon Files 2.0 (Hero Edition) I was a bit overwhelmed by the point cost also when I first started glossing over the product. I thought that if I wanted to use these characters for my game I was going to have to rewrite them. But once I actually started looking closer at build costs, it's not so bad for the most part. There will still be some characters I'll need to adjust, but overall I think I'll be able to use them as is. (I'm starting the game with the group at 350-375pts.) What I've really liked about the book so far is the well written character backgrounds and the bases.
  23. Re: Creepiest/Sickest superhero concept ever? The ones that have really stuck with me all these years is the One, Bratpack, and Maximortal by Rick Veitch. These were some of the most disturbing comics I've read.
  24. Re: Best superhero titles of the 70's The first thing I remember reading from the 70's were the occassional EC reprints. At least I think they were reprints. I thought it was funny that scary comics were in a dentists office. The first superhero comic I actually collected from the 70's were the Champions. Was Batmite from the 70's?
  25. Re: What Have You Watched Recently? In the past week I've seen Ulimate Iron man- good, the Libertine- not so good, and 300- visually stunned. This week I plan on seeing Wallace and Gromit's Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Night Watch, and Curse of the Golden Flower.
