  5. Re: How to balance mages in high fnatasy. Good point!
  6. Re: How to balance mages in high fnatasy. I've been promoting EPIC events... But even I wouldn't let it go THAT far.
  7. Re: GM Help: That Player I Want to Strangle Or... Take a chance and give them what they want. Turn your game into an episode of Paranoia. Pit them against each other until they destroy the game all together. Then you'll have a chance to reboot and use the previous game as a deterrent for that kind of behavior in the future. Could be fun bein' devious.
  8. Re: How to balance mages in high fnatasy. I'd go even further than that... Assuming you're not bringing in all the PCs at a low level (cuz that makes my point moot) I'd allow each of them to make customized and very specific magical items. Items that reflect their long journey to appropriate them and the characters who wield them. Break some molds! Forge some new ideas in magic and its interaction with reality and the multiverse! Create some legends that the characters can flourish proudly and with great effect. Make the items as much a part of your story as the heroes that are honored or cursed to hold them. The way the characters deal with such magic could solidify and refine their heroic (or demonic) personality, making for great stories. Relish Elric not for his awesome abilities as a mage (for they were awesome) but for his mighty struggles with the vampiric runesword Stormbringer! Bilbo and Frodo were wondrous people but twas the Ring from whence the legend grew! Aladin was but a boy, yet his luck brought him into the presence of the Magic Lamp! Arthur would have been a promising sovereign but with Excalibur at his side he was the greatest king! How all of those characters dealt with their burden (for great magic, be it good or evil, is always a heavy burden) culminated in them becoming legends. Now, take several individuals of that stature, add magical creatures and wizards of different ilks and bring them together to create an epic legend!!! Set each appart, make them unique. As Vondy said, give them greatness but narrow their scope. Allow each mage and character to look, feel and act differently (maybe even reflecting locational, instructional, and, heck, maybe even temporal differences). They are the heroes (by hook or by crook) and they deserve to be special.
  9. Re: Superhero team Leader: PC or NPC? I actually find it virtually impossible to play an NPC leader and run him as if he's clueless of the story I'm GMing. I just wrote the the adventure, for cripes sake. It'd be an incredible struggle to NOT lead them down the right path, which would force me to play "stupid" (the end result being a leader who is almost always wrong). The only circumstance I can imagine that would require me (as GM) to play a team leader is one wherein I needed to set an example for a bunch of noobs with the expectation that, once they get the hang of things, a PC would take the reigns.
  10. Re: How to balance mages in high fnatasy. Really, if you're going to play High Fantasy it has to be with the understanding that magic is the most influential aspect of the game. What you can do to balance magic out is provide it to everyone or, conversely, provide a foil to it to everyone. True magic takes time and energy (be it provided by the caster himself, foci, or other). Casters made to adhere to the proceeding rule can be offset by other inherently non-magical characters who employ magic via items that contain their own energy source or are quickly deployed. In truth, some of the best High Fantasy games I've ever played had magic oozing out of every poor. The end result was a sort of "nuclear standoff" of magic that lead to higher levels of roleplaying and inter-character communication as well as a need to be more clever. Hero Fantasy is AWESOME at scaling magic and managing lots of it. It allows the GM to customize the magic specifically to each character. That keeps the characters interesting and independent. The Arabian Mage's magic will have a distinct color and applications as compared to the Tolkienesque Mage whose magic will look much different from the Melnibonéen Necromancer's magic. Much better than a bunch of PCs running around with virtually the same spells. Add to that the diversity a GM could introduce with items (magic swords and other weapons that can perform a myriad of effects for [or against] their wielder, magical wind-up steeds that grow from toys to actual size, caskets of magical snow that have the power to coat the landscape in winter despite the season, etc.) from different regions and you have an EPIC High Fantasy that can only be brought to you via the greatness of HERO SYSTEM!!! Wow, let loose my Hero evangelist there, didn't I?
  11. Re: Superhero team Leader: PC or NPC?
  12. Re: Superhero team Leader: PC or NPC? I've used the PC leader (according to team vote as prescribed in the team charter) coupled with an NPC benefactor and government liaisons for decades. Usually works out GREAT (Heterodyne's tenure as a government assigned leader notwithstanding - The PC, a really nice guy, was surprisingly great at being a g-man @hole and, despite my fears, it lead to great group roleplaying)

  14. Re: Perils of the warp!!! All Warp side effects should be around (but not higher than) 75 active points... Real Cost really doesn't matter. Any thoughts yet? I appreciate any power building help you can provide!!!
  15. Re: Perils of the warp!!! I'm using Terran Empire as a base, but they should be about equal to Star Wars Force Powers.
  16. Re: Perils of the warp!!! Thanks!!!
  17. Re: Perils of the warp!!! Thanks Rex!!! I need 75-point powers to use as rare side effects that appear when a character fails to contain the chaotic powers of The Warp as the reasoning behind psychic powers. Post them here, that way we can keep up a running conversation and get input from others (which is never a bad thing).
  18. I'm adding The Warp (from Warhammer Games) as a universal foil to The Force in my Star Hero game (Nemesis Squadron - see sig) Can anyone help me define the following "perils" in terms of Hero System 6th Edition powers to be used as side effects? Any help would be awesome!!! The Gibbering - Uncontrolled warp energy surges through the psyker’s mind, burning out their minds and driving them insane. Warp Burn - The energies of the warp manifest, striking the psyker’s mind and stunning him temporarily. Psychic Concussion - The violent energies knock the psyker unconsious and cascade outwards, also stunning those nearby. Psy-Blast - There is a sudden explosion, casting the psyker several metres into the air. Soul Sear - The psyker’s soul is overpowered by warp energy, scarring their spirit and preventing them from using their powers. Locked In - The excess energy remains in the psyker’s mind, locking them into a coma until it is overcome by sheer willpower. Chronological Incontinence - The psyker vanishes as time bends around them, they reappear a few moments later. Psychic Mirror - The psychic power targets the psyker himself. Warp Whispers - The voices of daemons fill the area, speaking into the minds of others and corrupting their souls. Vice Versa - The soul of the psyker is cast out and swaps bodies with a nearby being for a short period of time, if there is no nearby other, the soul wanders the warp for the same period and returns slightly less sane. Dark Summoning - A lesser daemon physically manifests for a short period. Ethereal Storm - The excess psychic energy lashes the minds of nearby sentient creatures. Blood Rain - A cloud of psychic energy envelops the area, causing storm winds and rain of blood. While this storm is in effect, any psychic powers in the area always cause perils of the warp Cataclysmic Blast - The psyker is immolated with psychic energy, burning their possessions, equipment and the area around them for a few metres. Mass Possession - Daemons reach into the minds of all living creatures over a large area for a period. Sentient individuals must spend their time mentally combating the daemonic influence or they fall to corruption. The Surly Bonds of Earth - much like the Falling Upwards phenomena, however gravity is reversed over a much larger area for much longer. Lifting objects much higher into the air.
  19. Re: NEMESIS SQUADRON: New Game Packet! Epic City has shut down and we're back to the TGU! YAY!!! I'm totally revamping the Tophan Galactic Union starting with 3 new galactic maps (Thermor, Ophidies and Auron). I've already completed the Auron Galaxy!!! The Auron Galaxy is our "Human" galaxy. I've populated it with Dune/Battle Tech feudal areas, 40K's Imperium, a Federation-type Union, a Star Wars offshoot territory, Space Elves (the Ishlyn), Kzinti, 5 races from Terran Empire, 3 ancient star gates and much, much more!!! WHEW!!! There's a lot going on, and it may be confusing to read it as a single image at such a low resolution, but you might as well take a look for fun's sake. Also, since my OC will be Thorgon, I created a picture for him! Hope you like it.
