So I saw American Underdog a few days ago and I feel like even more of a wuss than usual. My tendency is to hibernate in really cold weather--stay indoors, turn the heat up, and try to think of any reason to put off going outside, especially after the sun goes down. And in this movie we have a scene where Zachary Levi as Kurt Warner is driving through Iowa in the dead of winter with Anna Paquin as Brenda (they're not married at this point, but the bonds are forming) and her kids when their car runs out of gas. Quickly they scrape together whatever money they have (comes to four dollars and eighty-six cents) and then Kurt gets out and walks several miles to the nearest gas station, then walks back the same distance. I can barely go outside in cold weather, and he did that for his potential family. I tell you, I was impressed--and a little disappointed with myself.
Now the first few years when the Rams were in St. Louis, they used our town's university for their summer training facility, so they were, in a large sense, our "home team." So yes, I did feel a measure of interest in Warner's story, even though I've never met him or collected his memorabilia or anything else like that. I liked the movie, and I think you will like it too.
