  1. Last day to enter these three sweepstakes for Kindles preloaded with a dozen SF/Fantasy titles that I still wouldn't have time to read even though I'm sure they are awesome. Does involve allowing Tor to send you spam.
  2. I don't think he'll do anything dangerously stupid that he hasn't already. Keep in mind that Putin owns Trump, having bought him for an 0.5% share of Rosneft. Trump, Manafort, and Carter Page have been working with Russian oligarchs and oil tycoons for decades. The Russian mafia ran a money laundering operation right out of Trump Tower ffs. Putin also probably has plenty of kompromat on Trump. The good news out of all that is that Trump is really unlikely to provoke Putin into doing anything other than spike Trump's coffee with polonium. Ukraine and the Baltics are Putin's if he wants them though. Here is an in-depth article about Trump aides' Russia-Ukraine oil and money laundering schemes over the past fifteen years. Warning: long read, and it may make you feel a little queasy.
  3. The mentalist would make an obvious choice for leader if she could communicate telepathically. Energy projectors are kind of hard since it seems like any and every possible type of energy has been used for some EP or other. But sonic or broad-spectrum electromagnetic effects could have a lot of versatility. Either would allow for levitation, telekinesis, and NND attacks. I'd recommend spending some time on the personalities and weaknesses of each character. Not hard for those of us who are used to building Champions characters, but these will make the story easier to write. And do consider putting more than one "chick" on the team so your book might pass the Bechdel test.
  4. The Greek word for elements appears to be Stoicheia. Aside from ethnicity you could also go with Wu Xin, Godai, or Panchikarana. The fifth element (not to be confused with the film) goes by aether, akasha, quintessence, or void. I also spend a lot of time on Google Translate when I'm hunting for names. The Romanian word for essence, for example, is "esenţă", and for magic is "vrajitoare". The latter doesn't lend itself to much admittedly, but "Essenta" could work.
  5. I'd give the breechloader 1/2 DCV for an extra phase and the muzzleloader 0 DCV for a turn. And I think that's being generous to the muzzleloader. Loading one of those is a serious chore.
  6. First stage landed successfully. Second stage still copacetic and progressing toward deployment.

  12. This is completely counter to my understanding of Aquaman's origins and original portrayal.
  13. Someone has to instruct those seniors! Congrats!
  14. True, but fandom was an insignificant sliver of the potential audience when Smallville started out in '01. It's stupid, because it does alienate that guaranteed segment of viewership, and ignoring canon is hardly necessary for writing new good stories.* Smallville eventually did manage to succeed through good writing, while the Snyderverse both ignores canon and writes badly, which is really kind of remarkable. * Continuity, on the other hand, can and should be ignored when it gets in the way.
  15. And then the murders began Seems familiar somehow.
  16. I parked my car in the parking structure (goddammit) to pick up the last of my belongings from my former employer, which had gone out of business. I meandered down to the now dusty and mostly vacant offices, where pale sunlight filtered through the windows to illuminate dust particles hovering sadly in the stale air. The only thing left for me to get was a very large glass vase full of long-dead flowers. Carrying it back to the car, I passed Keanu Reeves in the parking structure (goddammit), who was in the process of loaning a bright green Lamborghini to a friend of his. I wished I was a friend of Keanu Reeves. At the car I set the vase down and took a good look at it. It had been used as a fish tank as well as a vase, so among the roots of the dead plants floated the mummified corpses of once-bright tropical fish, now dull and leathery. Some of them had their mouths locked around the aeration stones, as though they had died gasping for a last breath of air. A few dead butterflies floated in the water with the fish, stiff and papery. All were magnified by the lensing effect of the round glass vase.
