Hello, all! For people who don’t know me, I wrote a few Champs supplements way back when: Creatures of the Night: Horror Enemies, Ultimate Supermage, and Supermage Bestiary. Some villains from those books got adopted into the official Champions Universe (in Arcane Adversaries and The Mystic World); many did not. Our colleague Tiger has shown, through the “Forgotten Enemies” line, that apparently some people like to see revised and updated versions of old characters that didn’t make the cut into the CU. But why should Tiger have all the fun? The esteemed Jason Walters says its okay if I publish new versions of my old characters. I hope I can get at least a few supplements out of this, and maybe supply some useful new/old villains for Champions GMs.

Villains risen from the grave, as it were. Summoned from publication Limbo!

This is where you come in. I’ll use this thread to propose collections of villains. You give feedback. Does the proposal sound interesting? Do you like the lineup of characters, or would you prefer a different set? How many would you like to see per supplement? If you have any favorites from those old books, let me know and I’ll try to do something with them. Similarly, if you think a character was potentially cool but would benefit from a new and different approach, make the suggestion. Looking back, I see that not every word I wrote was genius. This gives me a chance to do better.
I might also round out collections with a few brand new characters, too. We’ll see.

A lot of my old characters were supernatural. (Supermage. Duh.) I figure those can go in a line of “Mystic Enemies” supplements, the way Steve Long produced a few “Martial Arts Enemies” supplements. Non-mystical villains from CoTN can go in a “Horror Enemies” line, though that will of course be much smaller.

    So let us begin...

Savage Worlds got a good boost early on with its free "one sheet" adventure format. Lots of short scenarios, playable with very little additional work, and they looked professional. I expect they were very useful for driving traffic to PEG's website too.

There are some 3rd edition books like Danger International and Western Hero I think should be redone for 6th.  Yes, Dark Champions kind of covers DI, but DI was specifically about spies and mercenaries with a specific flair of James Bond kind of approach, and I think its a niche that is still unfilled.

Hero has had MANY rewrites and rulebooks.  In addition to the big core books they had the Sidekicks and Basic Rulebooks which were streamlined books of 128 or 138 pages.  Champions Complete is yet ANOTHER basic rewrite for only minor changes.

The reason that hero is on basic life support and giving up the ghost fast is that it was decided in the past (4th or 5th?) to not provide any kind of campaigns or adventures.  Real gamers don't use them and similar tripe.  Sure, I still believe the 5th edition and 6th edition genre books are fantastic sources for designing worlds/campaigns.  As are the setting books.  But none of those products address the HUGE massively glaring missing part of the game.  Literally every successful RPG on the market has it, except Hero.

    PLAYABLE Adventures and Campaigns.

Yes, I know.  The microscopically tiny remaining gamers that are even aware of Hero insist they "would never use prebuilt".  But it is 2019 and the vast majority of gamers simply do not have time to built stuff.  That is why D&D packs the house.  Many of the people I know that play it don't even like D&D.  But it is one of the only games that they can actually play, as in sit at a table and actually chunk dice.

Hero has never been hard to play.
It has never been overly hard to design characters providing the person doing it has a basic imagination.

What has been made into a overwhelmingly daunting task is the requirement for the GM to design everything from practically scratch.

Hero does not need Champions Now, Champions Later or Champions Counter Clockwise.
What it needs is the minimum support for the existing line.
Champions Complete is the current version.
Now we need a few STARTER adventures suitable for initial build characters and at least one campaign to help new GM's with a practical and PLAYABLE example of a superworld.

The myth that people do not buy or play adventures or campaigns may have been true years ago.  But they are majority of product that moves in the here and now.

I feel like we are a group of old curmudgeons out in the stable hammering out horse shoes because "Dag-nab-it, them there horseless carriages will never catch on".

OK, so the original Champions is not precisely the same game that we have in Hero System 6 Edition or Champions Complete, but I still found this to be an interesting counterpoint to the prevailing Internet wisdom that Hero is an impenetrable game only playable by people with degrees in mathematics.

In the September 1981 issue of The Space Gamer, Aaron Allston reviewed Champions:

In other, only slightly related, news I finally bought a copy of Champions 6th edition this week for the bargain sum of £22 (about $27). Patience and eBay stalking for the win!

BigJackBrass reacted to Christopher R Taylor in Module Conversions
I have done a few module conversions on my website from AD&D (and Warhammer Quest) into Fantasy Hero.  They are kind of rough but playable quick converts.  I have done the following:

N1: Against the Cult of the Reptile God
    N2: The Forest Oracle
    N4: Treasure Hunt
U1: The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh
    U2: Danger at Dunwater
    U3: The Final Enemy
G1: Steading of the Hill Giant Chief
G2: Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl
    B2: Keep on the Borderland
    I3: Pharaoh
A1: Slave Pits of the Undercity

I have work started on A2, I4, and G3, to continue and finish those series, but are there any other modules people would really like to see?  Hint: I don't care to rebuild any of the S series.

Looks like we _might_ get the Western HERO with covers in the store after this weekend.  No definate answer yet.

Also looks like we'll be getting a Horror HERO, but no official word on that, either.  No; it's not my work (good and bad:  it's a decent job, and now I don't have to chop up the books I bought for this project, but I think with time I might have turned in a more archive grade, print-ready copy.  (and the spine).

Again, no official word yet;  Jason's a busy guy, and I don't hear back immediately on things.

    Keep your fingers crossed!

Heh.  I once had a supervillainess make friends with Grond, gave him a My Little Pony as a gift -- and then later stole it and convinced him that one of the PC heroes took it.

You can imagine the hero's confusion when Grond came charging at him, shouting, "GROND WANT PINKIE PIE!!!"

BigJackBrass reacted to Lord Liaden in Good Pulp Movies to watch
If you like pulp-era sci-fi, such as Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers,
is now on YouTube. This is an animated movie created by Filmation in 1979, which was the basis for their watered-down NBC Saturday-morning cartoon series. The movie itself was finally shown in its entirety on prime-time television in 1982.
This is one of the most faithful adaptations of the style and characters of the original comic strips ever committed to film, much more mature than the series version. The voice acting is top-notch, and the animation is high quality and ground-breaking for the era.

A VHS version of the movie has been uploaded to some websites in the past, but this upload is reportedly from a rare laserdisc rip and is of higher quality.
