Well, it wasn't a terribly good joke, whether it was the for the fans or not. And it had the unfortunate side effect of establishing the notion that its most trusted field agents (remember, Coulson was entrusted with the task of finding, investigating, and retrieving Mjolnir) don't believe the agency they work for has a stable enough name to warrant simply calling it by its eminently pronounceable acronym.

Joke or not, it's in the movie, therefore it is canon. You can dismiss the "trivial" bits of a movie all you like, but they are still canon by the definition of the word. I just think writers and producers of movie franchises ought to show a little more respect and care for the fact that everything they write and put on screen becomes canon, whether they think that is reasonable or not.

Continuity is a cornerstone of filmmaking. It is regarded as a cornerstone of long-form storytelling in general. It shouldn't be sacrificed at the altar of someone's so-called "creative vision" unless they are knowingly aiming for something avante-garde or surrealist in nature, where continuity is one of the elements being played with intentionally.

Now granted, sustaining continuity is difficult with any narrative that lasts decades (comic books, soap operas, etc.), especially when it becomes regarded as an inconvenience rather than a measure of quality. But sometimes just a little bit of planning and foresight (and discipline) can go a long way towards maintaining continuity. In all honesty I'd say that Marvel Studios has done an impressive job with it overall, but that's why the small, easily avoided mistakes are so frustrating to witness.

I recently saw a YouTube review of Captain Marvel that pointed out that '90s Fury used the word "shield" for S.H.I.E.L.D. However, in 2008--during the events of the first Iron Man film--Coulson made it pretty clear that they were still working out the name of the organization and were referring to it by its individual words (they were mining humor out of how much of a mouthful it was, remember?). It's these little failures of continuity that make me shake my fist in rage at Hollywood screenwriters.

I agree with LL. However, the show needed to decide what it was going to dramatize, and I think it had trouble figuring out what that should be.

On the one hand, if you take away Batman's rogues gallery and make Gotham a city full of conventional criminals and nothing more, then there's really no reason to set it in Gotham City. On the other hand, if you do add in all of Batman's villains, then you end up having Jim Gordon taking them on instead of Batman, which would be too much cognitive dissonance.

The last option is to show Jim Gordon cleaning up the traditional criminal element, leaving a vacuum that draws in prototypes of Batman's rogues gallery, which is what I think the show tried to do at first. But like I said, they discovered that even this "half step" towards a "real Batman show" was not enough to keep people tuning in, and so they started throwing in all of Batman's villains, in one form or another, way before they normally would have appeared and tried to make it work with a young proto-Batman and a heavy dose of Weirdness Factor.

The anti-feminists have shifted their campaign from predicting that Brie Larson will have sabotaged her own box office prospects by at least $100M, to a conspiracy theory that states Disney is somehow inflating box office return figures to make it merely look like a success, when in fact it is the massive failure they predicted all along. The crazy never quits.

The teaser for Joker is out, and the film is generating a lot of positive buzz for its "Taxi Driver/Requiem for a Dream" vibe.

I'm not sure playing a lunatic is a huge stretch for Joaquin Phoenix...

Yeah, the initial blow with Stormbreaker did appear to Stun Thanos, who spent his next Phase coming out of Stun. Thor spent his next Phase pushing the axe further in for extra damage, you know, just for good measure, which ended his Phase. When Thanos said, "You should have gone for the head," he was basically monologuing and it was still his Phase, not Thor's. Remember, it takes zero time to deliver dramatic dialogue during your Phase. Thanos could have gloated for much longer and still been allowed to snap his fingers to end his Phase.

So, basically Infinity War was just Thanos going through a Phase.

No, but Thor should be able to, IMO.

In the absence of specific information to the contrary, Thor can't be faulted for relying on an attack which (extensive) experience taught him would almost certainly be lethal.

It was just a joke pointing out the other nerd rage gripe. They're both stupid gripes. I wasn't in any way supporting the Thor thing. I was mocking both gripes.

Edit: But I don't want to in any way shame you for your continuing nerd rage about the misplaced nerd rage about Thor not aiming for the head.

I always use the speed chart, even if people don't have much variety between them.  The usual range is 2-5 in Fantasy Hero, with almost everything 3 and 4.  That's not a wide range of possibilities, but it still matters because that 4 speed character has an edge.  And with monsters and NPCs it can really set them apart.  That 5 speed elf is really frightening and capable compared to the 3 speed warrior.

Plus, the speed chart give you dynamics like recoveries, held phases, etc.

Zeropoint's analysis of speed is good (although I'd say Yung Bieu rather than Jackie Chan but he's more obscure) and it helps understand why its valuable even if not a wide spread of stats.

J.J. Abrams isn't as much to blame for Star Warts as Kathleen Kennedy is. She's the one who never "got" Star Wars growing up, doesn't particularly care for it, never wanted the job to oversee it, and decided that if she was going to be stuck with the job that she was going to make Star Wars "for people like her". And I suspect that's precisely what we got, despite J.J.'s best attempts to give us a continuation of the Star Wars saga the fans would recognize (which probably explains why The Force Awakens felt so much like A New Hope: Greatest Hits).

And while the Smallville writer's bible said "No flight, no tights," I never felt that was because the showrunners didn't like or understand the superhero genre. No, that honor goes to Tim Kring, the creator of Heroes, who has gone on record numerous times saying he never "got" the whole "costumes and codenames thing," and so never made them part of his show.
