  1. Cool. Glad to be a part of a good thread, thanks for the welcome. I don't know if this would work for a alternate name for Channeling, but Attuning could also work if the person that uses the gem Attunes the gem to him/her so he/she can focus magic through it as long as its Attuned, or Linked, to him. Or, to take a Earthdawn word, it could be Threading, or Weaving, a spell effect through the person and the item, in this case a gem, so only that person can use its power while its linked to the person. You said that you didn't like Channeling that much so here are some ideas I was pondering while we discuss gem magic.
  2. I would like to see the book as large as Star HERO going into the topics with as much emphasis and detail as in Star HERO and also at least a good 2-6 pages on how to really mesh fantasy with sci-fi. A book that size should be able to fit in a few pages for common prices towards items and also a page or two devoted to how much common workers make, which has probably been done in other products but not to any degree to make it really seem like its really a part of fantasy. I also nominate a focus into various types of magic and how to make these various types FEEL fantasy, not just be listed as a option. Most important of all, beyond anything else, is that the book needs to be COOL. It needs to have a amazing front cover that speaks "LOOK at me, BUY me, you won't regret it." It needs to have equivalent artwork inside also, which I felt was not the strong point in Terran Empire personally. I stress artwork because its the first thing most people look at when they pick up a book. It's not the most important, but if its not visually inspiring, then it won't sell as much. The other thing that it needs to be is, like Star HERO, it needs to have enough generic information that anybody could pick it up of any game system and can use it. Star HERO did that by all the gaming advice it gave for GM's that would like to run a Star HERO game, and Fantasy HERO needs to do the exact same thing. It needs a plethora of advice for running a fantasy game. This might have already been stated but I didn't feel like wading through over 120 or so messages so I am stating this now. Forgive me if I stated something that has been mentioned previously.
  3. another question I just thought of another question to ask: 3) I don't know if you are doing this but is the power fueled by the gems in your magic systems fueled by the person him/herself or does each gem sort of have its own END power reserve for powering spells through the gem, and when the END reserve is depleted then the stone is deplete for a short time until it recharges, or is it a combination of the two? Sorry if this is answered previously but specific answers to specific questions does help sometimes. Thanks for all answers.
  4. Okay, I decided what kind of game I will run. It will be a Final Fantasy in Space game, pretty much. It will have many races, use gem magic akin to Materia in FF7, a great and powerful bad guy that wants to threaten the universe with powerful magics, cybernetics will exist, there will be a Solar Union of planets (okay, working title for the good guys group, but Galactic Federation is used way way to much and I need something cooler than that). The characters will probably be 175 pt based characters. 100 base plus 75 disadvantage, and I will have some rules for how points will be spent. Basically something like at least 35-50 points on skills, 35-85 or so on Characteristics, and then the powers will probably use a framework of some kind to simulate different kinds of attacks with weapons. What I need is a really kick butt name for the main galactic federation, and I don't want to use that name but I can't think of a cool name right now...its late and I am tired. Any help will be great if anybody wants to throw out a suggestion...
  5. Mavnn....Cyrus is COOL. That is a cool character and it does have a FF feel to it. Can you do a Magic user as if he lived in the FF7 world? Also, when you made this character, did you have any creation limits on points for powers and how did effect your decisions? I ask because I am still getting used to this system and you seem to have a good grasp on how to apply the advantages and limitations to powers to make them feel really like a FF character...or at least that is how I see it.
  6. Cool stuff. Some of this sounds like the Demonwars Saga stones that Salvatore wrote, which is what I am reading right now. I have a quesiton or two, if I can think of both (and people of both systems can answer as it can probably apply to both): 1) Does each gem have its own special power that is already set so no matter what each time I pick up a Ruby Gem then it will have the same effect? If this is already answered then I didn't read it well enough but if you can answer it that would be great. 2) Could you incorporate into your systems the idea of having weapons that can include the gems to power the weapons as a foci for the gems, like Materia? This is what I am sort of aiming at in my game that I want to run. editted for spelling.
  7. I will play/run a game that combines elements of fantasy and star hero, kinda like Star Wars but with more normal fantasy races and humans will actually be a minority in the game. It will have magic and cybernetics and gem magic (actually a major part which is why I am so happy that many have worked on some of them in the other thread) and psionics perhaps, with spaceships of normal tech and then spaceships of magic tech, probably powered by powerful gems or matrices that fuel the ship...something like that.
  8. Would this work: Buy a lot of armor that only works against a specific attack type and have the armor only have the defense against that attack type? Like a Fire Protection spell...buy it as Armor, put it all ED, then have a disadvantage that it works only against fire. Or a Force field... then put in a lot of points into it. But, I think that deep down there is no such thing as a complete Invulnerability to something because it just doesn't make to much sense. And it takes the danger out of it...but to have a power that can provide a great amount of defense to something, and have it high enough to be more than most attacks within a particular campaign, that could, and should, be possible.
  9. I second this nomination for Invulnerability vs. single attack types, it would make it much easier than to use Desolodification, plus it would be much easier to say during a conversation.
  10. materia someone needs to do FF 7 system for materia as the magic focus with gems...I read the other post but neither seems to fit that kind of game as far as gem magic, but both are pretty cool. I would try but its been a long time since I played the game and I am contstantly busy doing something else with no time to create this kind of magic system...unless it has already been done and I don't know the website it can be found at. If anybody knows if it could you post it?
  11. Demonwars Saga is a cool read, probably better than some of his Forgotten Realms novels. I didn't know that there would be a d20 game for it, but if the setting is cool I would pick it up and then convert it to HERO. Could you guys post what you have on Gem magic? I have been looking for a way to use something similar in my Star Hero game that will also have some elements of FF in it, and probably even more from the Xenosaga game just released.
  12. Dark Side/Light Side I just thought of this and I was trying to come up with an idea but my mind is just getting free of taking my last finals early this morning... how can you handle the dark side/light side aspects of the Force game mechanically using the Hero sytem?
  13. wow this sounds like a cool idea having some people kidnapped from our time period and wake up in a future period. Just to follow up, how are they reacting to their predicament and how are the locals treating them?
  14. With the release of Terran Empire and Star HERO, I am still in the working stages of trying to figure all this out and cipher the information so it all makes a lot of sense, but one thing I noticed that the kinds of campaigns one can run are very staggering, and I was curious as to what kind of games many of you will be playing in. Perhaps I will also get a wonderful idea and run with it in my own game also.
  15. yeah, you can do that, right? Give us da gooods man, we neeed the goooods, like, right now, so weee can play some superbly wonderful gaammes maaan...so, is yu gonna give us da goooods, or is wee gonna have to da do sumphin 'bout it??? oops, i mean grrrrr
  16. I was just wondering what are some of the funniest moments you have ever had roleplaying in the hero system, either some that were just funny because a person did something stupid or mistakes with the game mechanics that lead to funny experiences in the game?
  17. besides the ones above, are there any other good hero websites that dwell into psionics or jedi like powers? well, to ask as an offshoot, are there any good fantasy websites also that have a good listing of magic spells?
  18. Star Wars HERO Here is something to check out if you are planning on doing something like a Star Wars HERO game: http://www.sysabend.org/champions/campaigns/StarHeroWars/CharacterGeneration.htm I hope the link works...it works on my computer.
  19. Lmao, that was funny...I never thought I would see them come up with a 3 and a .5 edition of that game...its definately one way to get money from them. Thank God all we need is HERO. One book to run any type of campaign we want, any genre and various power levels... I think GURPS is like this also, but HERO pulls it off better, I think. But, that is my opinion.
  20. I was wondering this myself...can ya tell us, we need cool pics also??? Both of us Shadow types need cool, mysterious looking pics...
  21. A couple questions: What is FREd mean? two: can you give specific details as to the nature of the universe that TE is set in, things about cybernetics and psionics, things like that...and what different organizations are in it besides the TE? My store still doesn't think its out yet, and unfortunately I don't have the $$$ to order it online yet...and I definately want this book.
  22. Just get them both and enjoy the best of all worlds. There is nothing wrong with getting all of them, and if you end up really liking the system, then you'll get almost all the books anyways...at least all the books cost the same as the 3 core books for D&D, and that's for just a fantasy game. HERO is the way to go.
  23. I didn't read the entire board and if this was already mentioned then forgive the repetition, but I think it would be cool if there were some hex grids in the back that are very similar to the other ones in the bestiary book and resource kit for cone, area effects, range modifiers and similar things that can be used with powers. I hope that makes sense.
  24. thanks for the quick link or else I wouldn't have even noticed it.
  25. what are the aliens like in the book? I don't have it yet and my LGS is really slow in getting some newer books and I know I want to buy it, but what am I missing out on???
